Abstract

In the context of increasing globalisation and the implementation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), Indonesian companies are under pressure to improve their collective productivity and efficiency. Although the integration of advanced technology is the main focus, human involvement still plays a crucial role in achieving optimal production. This research examines the factors contributing to worker fatigue during material handling activities, emphasising the importance of prioritising employee well-being, safety, and health. A proven effective approach is to take an ergonomic design approach to workstations to suit the physical characteristics of workers, thereby reducing fatigue levels and increasing productivity. Implementing the Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) method is proposed as a systematic way of identifying and addressing various operational challenges. A case study at PT Kubota Indonesia demonstrates that implementing this method can significantly enhance manufacturing productivity while maintaining stringent safety standards.

Abstract

Magnesium silicate (MgSiO3) is an inorganic compound formed from the reaction between magnesium and silicate. This study is all about making the process of forming magnesium silicate from bittern using the precipitation method as good as it can be. Bittern is a liquid waste from the salt industry that is rich in magnesium ions. In this study, we lovingly crafted magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) by bringing bittern together with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and then gently continuing to react with sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) to form magnesium silicate (MgSiO3). There are some differences in the molar ratio between NaOH: MgCl₂ and Mg(OH)₂: We used Na2SiO3 to figure out the best conditions for making the product. I'm so excited to share the results of the analysis with you! We found that the highest yield of 69,969% was obtained at a mole ratio of NaOH: MgCl₂ = 1:2 and Mg(OH)₂: Na2SiO3 = 1:1. We used X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) to figure out the best mix of magnesium silicate, and it turned out to be a beautiful balance of 17% MgO and 71% SiO₂. This study is great news because it shows that adjusting the amount of reactant you use can make a big difference in how well magnesium silicate is produced. This opens up a lot of opportunities for using it in different industries.

Abstract

One key factor influencing efficiency is the application of ergonomic principles, particularly physical ergonomics, which includes aspects of anthropometry and repetitive motion. This study was conducted at PT FMS, a manufacturer of UV Harnesses, focusing on the cutting workstation that still heavily relies on manual labor. With a targeted productivity increase of 135% and no significant change in the production plan, the standing work posture maintained throughout the day poses a risk of fatigue and potential injury to operators. This study aims to analyze and propose improvements to reduce fatigue and design an ergonomic cutting workstation. Anthropometric data were used to calculate percentiles for designing an ergonomic worktable, while body discomfort and movement-related injury risks were assessed using the Nordic Body Map (NBM) and Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) methods, respectively. The analysis revealed that the non-ergonomic workstation design caused physical complaints such as back and leg pain, indicating the need for redesign. It is recommended that the company routinely evaluate ergonomic factors and regularly distribute NBM questionnaires to all production operators to identify potentially harmful work activities.

Abstract

The decline in water transparency in the Saguling Reservoir indicates deteriorating water quality due to increasing pollutant loads from domestic, industrial, agricultural, and aquaculture activities. This study aims to predict water transparency using an ANN model, integrating remote sensing data from Landsat 8 (2013-2024) and in-situ measurements from 12 sampling points. The analysis began with correlation tests, which revealed weak to moderate relationships between transparency and other variables. Subsequent simple and multiple linear and logistic regression analyses produced weak correlations, with the highest R² of 0.1853 observed in multiple logistic regression. The Random Forest algorithm was applied to identify the most influential variables. The selected predictors included Bands 3, 4, 5, and 7, as well as temperature, EC, and TSS. These variables were used as inputs for the ANN model, which demonstrated high performance with an R² of 0.8514, explaining 85.14% of the variability in water transparency. The prediction results were visualized in a distribution map, indicating a predominance of transparency class IV (0-2.5 m) across the reservoir. This suggests limited light penetration due to high pollutant loads. The study shows that integrating remote sensing and ML enables effective large-scale water quality monitoring and supports sustainable water resource management.

Abstract

The declining quality of river water due to domestic and industrial activities demands effective water treatment technologies. This study aims to evaluate the effect of varying the number of baffles in a hydraulic coagulation reactor on the removal efficiency of Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and turbidity using two types of coagulants: Ferric Chloride (FeCl₃) and Ferrous Sulfate (FeSO₄). The experiment was conducted with baffle variations of 26, 30, 34, 38, and 42, and sedimentation times of 30, 60, and 90 minutes. The results showed that increasing the number of baffles and sedimentation time improved TSS and turbidity removal efficiency up to an optimum point. FeSO₄ achieved the highest TSS removal efficiency of 97% at 42 baffles and 90 minutes of sedimentation, while FeCl₃ demonstrated more stable and high turbidity removal efficiency, reaching up to 97%. Statistical analysis using ANOVA indicated that the type of coagulant, number of baffles, and sedimentation time significantly affected TSS removal, whereas turbidity removal was more influenced by the number of baffles and sedimentation time. These findings highlight the importance of proper hydraulic design in optimizing the coagulation-flocculation process for more efficient water treatment.

Abstract

Work in shipyards is characterized by high workload, intense physical activity, and extreme environmental conditions. These conditions have the potential to cause fatigue, which may negatively impact performance, health, and occupational safety. This study aims to analyze the relationship between working hours and the level of fatigue among shipyard workers at PT X in Surabaya. The research was conducted from June 10 to 18, 2025, involving 37 active workers as the population, with samples selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected through interviews, field observations, and health examinations, then analyzed using Pearson correlation test with Minitab 18 software. Fatigue was measured based on six indicators: physical exhaustion, decreased concentration, mood instability, persistent drowsiness, lack of enthusiasm, and forgetfulness. The analysis showed a very weak correlation between working hours and physical fatigue (r = -0.004; p = 0.982), and a similarly weak correlation with concentration (r = -0.268; p = 0.108). However, the lack of enthusiasm variable showed a significant correlation in the 12-hour work group (r = 0.348; p = 0.035). This indicates that work motivation is more sensitive to long working hours than physical complaints. The conclusion of this study highlights that extended working hours can reduce motivation and potentially trigger chronic fatigue.

Abstract

Environmental monitoring and complaint systems are essential components in the protection and management of the environment. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of monitoring mechanisms and community-based complaint systems regarding environmental violations in Indonesia. A qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach was employed through literature review, regulatory analysis, and case studies in several areas of Sidoarjo. Based on the analysis of community complaints data from 2024 and 2025, industrial activities continue to pose serious environmental problems. In 2024, manufacturing industries dominated the complaints, primarily related to air and water pollution, ineffective waste management, and inadequate equipment usage. These issues directly affected nearby communities, causing noise and pollution that reached residential areas. Meanwhile, in 2025, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) were identified as the main contributors to pollution due to the lack or suboptimal operation of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) and air emission filters. Insufficient public outreach and knowledge regarding waste management also led to indiscriminate waste disposal into surrounding waterways. Overall, the most common violations by both industry types were related to air and water pollution regulations.
