Abstract

Background: Eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that impacts 10% of the adult population worldwide, whereas obesity represents a significant global health issue. The relationship between eczema and obesity is intricate and differs among various populations. Mechanisms encompass eczema symptoms, avoidance of physical activity, gut microbiome influences, glucocorticoid medications, and factors related to obesity. Examining the relationship between eczema severity and related factors can guide targeted interventions and enhance comprehension of the shared pathways among these conditions. Methods: This systematic review adhered to PRISMA 2020 guidelines, focusing exclusively on full-text articles published in English between 2014 and 2024. Editorials and review articles without a DOI were excluded to ensure the utilization of high-quality sources. A literature review was conducted utilizing reputable databases including ScienceDirect, PubMed, and SagePub to identify relevant studies. Result: An initial search in databases yielded approximately 600 publications relevant to this topic. After a rigorous three-stage screening process, eight studies that met the inclusion criteria were selected for in-depth analysis. These studies underwent comprehensive critical evaluation, allowing in-depth exploration of the relationship between obesity and eczema. This systematic approach ensures that the analysis is based on high-quality evidence that is consistent with the research objectives. Conclusion: Studies demonstrate a clear correlation between moderate eczema and obesity. No significant association was discovered between severe eczema and high BMI. A higher BMI, comorbidities, and behavior may affect the association. Without a dose-response relationship, a bidirectional relationship is possible. To understand the complex association between eczema and obesity, future studies should investigate a non-linear relationship utilizing BMI as a continuous variable.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is prevalent worldwide and linked to rising cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, increasing healthcare burdens. DM complications include atherosclerosis, ischemic heart disease, and peripheral arterial disease, primarily driven by insulin resistance and hyperglycemia, leading to atherosclerosis progression. This systematic review aims to analyze current evidence on the risk factors influencing cardiovascular disease in diabetes mellitus type 2 patients based on literatures of the last 10 years. Methods: The study adhered to PRISMA 2020 standards, examining English literature from 2014 to 2024. It excluded editorials, reviews from the same journal, and submissions without a DOI. PubMed, SagePub, SpringerLink, and Google Scholar were utilized as literature sources. Result: Initially retrieving 360 articles from online databases (PubMed, SagePub, SpringerLink and Google Scholar) eight relevant papers were selected after three rounds of screening for full-text analysis. Conclusion: This study underline the importance of early intervention, dietary and lifestyle changes, and tailored medication in light of the substantial cardiovascular risks associated with Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM). Reducing risks requires a multimodal strategy that is customized to each patient's unique profile.

Abstract

Background: Pediatric systemic lupus erythematosus (pSLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease with an incidence of 0.3–0.9 per 100,000 children per year. Despite growing interest in RTX as a therapeutic option, its use in pSLE remains off-label, and its efficacy and safety have not been well established in this population. This systematic review aims to assess the effectiveness and safety of RTX in children with pSLE based on literatures of the last decade. Methods: The study followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines, reviewing English-language publications from 2015 to 2025. Editorials, duplicate reviews from the same journal, and papers lacking a DOI were excluded. The literature search was conducted using PubMed, SagePub, SpringerLink, and Google Scholar. Result: A total of 2,172 articles were initially identified through online databases (PubMed, SagePub, SpringerLink, and Google Scholar). After three rounds of screening, eight relevant studies were selected for full-text analysis. Conclusion: Rituximab is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for pediatric SLE, reducing disease activity, corticosteroid dependence, and flare-ups. While generally safe, monitoring for infusion reactions and hypogammaglobulinemia is crucial. Early administration may improve outcomes, highlighting its role in refractory pediatric SLE management.

Abstract

Introduction: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a significant global health concern, often leading to severe complications such as bacteremia, respiratory failure, and septic shock. Bacteremia, detected through blood cultures, is a critical indicator of systemic infection and is associated with worse clinical outcomes, including prolonged ICU stays and higher mortality rates. With the rise of antimicrobial resistance and advancements in vaccine research, understanding the current epidemiology and management of CAP, particularly bacteremic CAP, is essential. Methods: This systematic review adheres to PRISMA 2020 guidelines and aims to evaluate the prevalence, risk factors, diagnosis, management, and complications of CAP, with a focus on bacteremia. Studies published between 2019 and 2025 were included, focusing on diagnostic methods, treatment strategies, and outcomes. Data were extracted from PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. Results: Nine studies were included, highlighting trends in diagnostic practices, antibiotic stewardship, and the effectiveness of various treatment regimens. Key findings include increased use of C-reactive protein (CRP) and chest X-rays (CXR) in primary care, the benefits of syndromic molecular testing for pathogen-directed treatment, and the comparative effectiveness of antibiotic regimens such as beta-lactam plus macrolide (BL+M) and fluoroquinolones (FQ). Studies also emphasized the importance of clinical evaluation in interpreting diagnostic results and the need for optimized antibiotic use to reduce complications. Conclusion: This review shows the importance of evidence-based diagnostic and treatment strategies for CAP, particularly in managing bacteremia. While advancements in diagnostics and treatment have improved outcomes, challenges such as antibiotic resistance and underutilization of risk stratification tools remain. Future research should focus on optimizing diagnostic accuracy, treatment efficacy, and antibiotic stewardship to improve patient outcomes.

Background: Congestive heart failure (CHF) diagnosis requires accurate imaging techniques like echocardiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and computed tomography (CT). However, challenges persist in diagnostic accuracy due to factors like operator dependency and radiation exposure. This review aims to systematically evaluate the performance and accuracy of various diagnostic imaging modalities in the context of CHF. Methods: This systematic review adhered to PRISMA 2020 guidelines, focusing exclusively on full-text articles published in English between 2014 and 2024. Editorials and review articles without a DOI were excluded to ensure the utilization of high-quality sources. A literature review was conducted utilizing reputable databases including ScienceDirect, PubMed, and SagePub to identify relevant studies. Result: The initial database search identified over 1,000 relevant publications. Through a rigorous three-stage screening process, eight studies met the predefined inclusion criteria for in-depth analysis. Each study underwent a comprehensive critical evaluation, ensuring a high-quality evidence base for assessing the diagnostic imaging performance and accuracy in congestive heart failure. This systematic approach strengthened the study’s relevance, providing meaningful insights into the strengths and limitations of various imaging modalities. Conclusion: Echocardiography, cardiac CT, and cardiac MRI are essential imaging modalities for diagnosing and managing CHF. Echocardiography offers real-time imaging, while cardiac CT provides high-resolution insights. MRI, the gold standard for myocardial tissue characterization, offers unparalleled prognostic value. Integrating these technologies enhances patient outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Hip osteoarthritis (OA) is a common cause of chronic pain and disability that affects millions of people. It happens when the hip joint wears down over time, making movement painful and difficult. This systematic review aims to evaluate current literatures about the effectiveness of corticosteroid and lidocaine injection on hip osteoarthritis. Methods: The study followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines, reviewing English-language publications from 2015 to 2025. Editorials, duplicate reviews from the same journal, and papers lacking a DOI were excluded. The literature search was conducted using PubMed, SagePub, SpringerLink, and Google Scholar. Result: A total of 2,172 articles were initially identified through online databases (PubMed, SagePub, SpringerLink, and Google Scholar). After three rounds of screening, eight relevant studies were selected for full-text analysis. Conclusion: Corticosteroid and lidocaine injections remain a valuable option for short-term pain relief in hip OA, particularly for patients with synovitis or effusion. However, concerns regarding long-term joint health, infection risks, and diminishing efficacy over time suggest that these injections should be used judiciously.

Background: Maxillofacial trauma often results in mandibular fractures, requiring effective and safe management techniques. Techniques like Erich arch bars, intermaxillary fixation (IMF) screws, and miniplate configurations have evolved to improve outcomes. Evidence-based practice is crucial in selecting appropriate techniques for treating jaw fractures, considering factors like functional outcomes and complication rates. Methods: This systematic review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines, concentrating solely on full-text articles published in English from 2015 to 2025.  Editorials and review articles lacking a DOI were excluded to maintain the quality of sources utilized.  A literature review was performed using reputable databases such as ScienceDirect, PubMed, and SagePub to identify pertinent studies. Result: The initial database search turned up over 90 relevant publications on the subject.  Following a three-stage screening process, eight papers satisfied the predefined inclusion criteria and were chosen for further analysis.  Each study underwent a rigorous critical evaluation, allowing for a complete examination of the effectiveness, efficacy, and safety of different techniques for treating jaw fractures.  This systematic methodology guaranteed that the analysis was founded on high-quality evidence, well matched with the study's objectives, and capable of giving valuable insights into this complex association. Conclusion: Techniques for managing mandibular fractures are crucial for improving patient outcomes. IMF screws, Erich arch bars, and 3D mini plates offer advantages in comfort and efficiency. A tailored approach, including locking miniplate systems and embrasure wires, is essential for achieving better outcomes. Evidence-based decision-making is essential for future advancements in maxillofacial trauma care.

Abstract

Background: The literature reviewed demonstrates a significant correlation between liver function abnormalities and the prognosis of COVID-19 patients. Literature Review: Subsequent studies, including those by (Du et al., 2021) and (Singhai et al., 2021), documented that a significant percentage of hospitalized patients exhibited abnormal liver function tests, particularly in severe cases, thereby establishing a clear relationship between liver dysfunction and the severity of COVID-19. The implications of these findings underscore the necessity for healthcare providers to monitor liver function closely, as abnormalities can serve as prognostic indicators. The review of literature also indicates that the mechanisms underlying liver injury in COVID-19 are multifaceted. Studies have pointed to direct viral effects, systemic inflammatory responses, and drug-induced toxicity as contributing factors to liver dysfunction. The interplay between liver injury and inflammatory markers has been emphasized as a vital area for further research, with findings suggesting that elevated liver enzymes correlate with increased mortality risk. Conclusion: In conclusion, the literature consistently highlights that liver dysfunction is a significant factor in predicting the prognosis of COVID-19 patients. The prevalence of liver abnormalities, their association with disease severity, and the underlying mechanisms warrant close monitoring and management of liver health in this patient population. Clinicians are encouraged to incorporate routine liver function assessments into care strategies to optimize patient outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: The literature on pediatric intussusception highlights the complexities of diagnosis and management, underscoring the need for timely intervention to optimize outcomes. The articles reviewed provide a multifaceted perspective on the condition, detailing diagnostic techniques, management protocols, and surgical outcomes. Literature Review: The initial article emphasizes the idiopathic nature of pediatric intussusception, linking it primarily to viral infections and the hyperplasia of Peyer's patches (Gupta et al., 2010). This foundational understanding is crucial as it sets the stage for the subsequent discussions on imaging and intervention strategies. The advocacy for ultrasonography as the primary diagnostic tool (Dadlani et al., 2020) reflects a shift towards non-invasive methods, aligning with contemporary pediatric practices that prioritize patient safety. The systematic review consolidates these insights, emphasizing the efficacy of non-surgical interventions and the necessity of surgical options when initial methods fail (Ali Attoun et al., 2023). It also discusses the role of adjunct therapies, such as dexamethasone, which reflects an evolving approach to treatment that integrates pharmacological support with traditional techniques. This distinction is critical for surgical planning, as it informs whether non-operative reduction or surgical intervention is warranted. The importance of timely diagnosis and intervention is further reinforced by the findings on idiopathic intussusception, where non-operative methods, such as pneumatic enemas, are shown to be effective (Alnamshan et al., 2023). Conclusion: In conclusion, the reviewed literature collectively underscores the critical importance of accurate diagnosis and timely intervention in managing pediatric intussusception. The evolution of management protocols, from non-invasive imaging to surgical interventions, illustrates a comprehensive approach that prioritizes patient outcomes. Continued research and the development of standardized management algorithms will be essential in further refining these protocols to enhance surgical outcomes for pediatric patients.

Abstract

Background: The management of pediatric appendicitis has witnessed significant advancements, particularly with the introduction of non-operative strategies alongside traditional surgical approaches. Literature Review: The study by (GUANA et al., 2016) highlights the challenges of managing appendicitis in younger children, particularly under five years old, where atypical presentations can lead to complications such as perforation. The comparative analysis of laparoscopic and open surgical techniques underscores the benefits of minimally invasive surgery, including reduced postoperative pain and shorter recovery times, which are crucial in pediatric care. In contrast, the exploration of non-operative management by (Hall and Eaton, 2018) reveals that non-operative strategies, particularly antibiotic therapy, can be effective for uncomplicated appendicitis, with the potential to avoid surgery altogether. This perspective is supported by (Stulberg et al., 2018), who conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis demonstrating that antibiotic management yields better quality-adjusted life years and is less costly than surgical intervention. The systematic review by (Maita et al., 2019) further solidifies the efficacy of non-operative treatment for nonperforated appendicitis, indicating a significant success rate while acknowledging the need for careful patient selection to mitigate the risk of complications. The findings from (Yadao et al., 2022) and (Jumah and Wester, 2022) reinforce the potential of antibiotics as a first-line treatment for uncomplicated appendicitis, showcasing promising success rates and shorter hospital stays for non-surgical patients.  Conclusion: In conclusion, the literature presents a compelling case for the evolving management strategies for pediatric appendicitis, advocating for a balanced approach that incorporates both surgical and non-operative options. As non-operative management gains traction, it is critical for clinicians to consider individual patient characteristics and the associated risks of recurrence and complications when determining the optimal treatment pathway.
