Abstract

The rising popularity of ChatGPT has an impact on student learning behavior. This study focused on how ChatGPT use and learning motivation affect students' self-directed learning. This study involved 98 respondents, who were undergraduate and master's students and had used ChatGPT for learning at least 1 (one) time, selected using the convenience sampling technique. This research employed multiple regression analysis methods. The research results show a significant and positive influence of ChatGPT use (R=0.747, β=0.419, p<0.01) and learning motivation (R=0.802, β=0.553, p<0.01) on self-directed learning. The study also found that learning motivation provided higher contribution to self-directed learning than ChatGPT use. These findings offer new insights to the existing knowledge on the role of artificial intelligence and learning motivation in supporting self-directed learning in students.

Abstract

The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) affects several aspects of life. While AI has positive impacts, it also leads to adverse impacts such as the rise of gadget addiction and cybercrime. This study investigated the role of perceived usage of the conversational GPT-4 AI model in cybercrimes and social media addictions among residents in Makurdi Nigeria. The cross-sectional survey involved 200 participants who used the latest conversational GPT-4 AI model in their smartphones. Participants were selected using convenience sampling techniques. The results revealed a relationship between the usage of the conversational GPT-4 AI model and cybercrime incidence (R=0.255, R2=0.065, F(1, 189)=13.223, p< 0.01). The baseline usage of the conversational GPT-4 AI model was also found to significantly predict an increase in social media addictions (R=0.434, R2=0.188, F(5, 195)=24.147, p<0.01). The study also revealed that the usage of the conversational GPT-4 AI model was significantly associated with an increase in both cybercrime and social media addictions (R=0.474, R2=0.226, F(2, 185)=5.991; p<0.01). Based on the study’s findings, there is a need to develop and deliver educational programs to inform users about the responsible use of AI technologies, including the GPT-4 model.

Abstract

This study considered the phenomenon of emotional homeostatic disequilibrium (EHD) that adversely affects individuals, to unveil factors that instigate it. It was carried out in the area of counseling psychology. The purpose was to determine whether or not sexual spousal abuse is related to EHD among married secondary school teachers in Rivers State of Nigeria (N=766). This quantitative study adopted an expost facto correlation design, while two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. Results of the study indicated a significant relationship between sexual spousal abuse and EHD (F = 98.01, r = 0.58, p < 0.05), and a moderating influence of cultural values/beliefs in that relationship among the participants (F=53.617, p<0.05). Specifically, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the psychological and emotional toll of sexual spousal abuse and informs more effective support and intervention strategies.

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of gender role stress on self-esteem and self-efficacy among parents (N=590) with interchanged roles in Cavite, Philippines. The significance of this research lies in its exploration of evolving gender roles within the context of a traditionally gendered society. Using structural equation modeling (SEM), the study examined relationships between gender role stress, self-esteem, and self-efficacy. The results revealed that gender role stress generally had a negative impact on self-esteem, particularly for working housewives (β=-0.408, p<0.001), while among househusbands it had a positive impact (β=0.552, p<0.001). Self-efficacy was found to be a significant mediator of the relationship between gender role stress and self-esteem among househusband (β=0.115, p<0.05), but not in working housewives (β=-0.03, p>0.05). The study emphasized the need for societal support mechanisms to mitigate the adverse effects of gender role stress and promote mental well-being in these contexts. This research contributes to the understanding of gender dynamics and their psychological implications in non-traditional family structures.

Abstract

Kidnapping and banditry have become pervasive in northern Nigeria, severely disrupting the lives of vulnerable communities including students in both pre-tertiary and tertiary institutions, particularly Zamfara State. However, research on their psychological impact on female undergraduate students is lacking. To fill this gap, this study investigated the psychological impact of kidnapping on female undergraduate students in Zamfara State, focusing on their social reintegration and academic pursuits. The study adopted a qualitative research design. Seven female undergraduates of Federal University Gusau who had recently been released after prolonged captivity participated in the study. A combination of purposive and snowball sampling techniques was used to select participants based on availability, willingness, and ability to provide detailed accounts. Data was collected through structured interviews. Thematic analysis revealed profound psychological trauma, including symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. Social reintegration challenges found in the study include stigmatization and alienation, while academic difficulties involve concentration, memory issues, and decreased motivation. The study recommends implementing comprehensive psychological support programs within educational institutions located in high-risk locations like Zamfara State, including professional counseling and peer support groups, to address the long-term psychological effects and facilitate better social and academic reintegration of the victims.

Abstract

Prospective retirees usually prepare for what they thought they would need for retirement adjustment while retired ones are better positioned to evaluate the adequacy of their earlier preparedness, judged by retirement reality. This survey investigated the pre-retirement guidance needs of retirement-eligible teachers, explored retroactive retirement guidance needs of retired teachers, and compared the results of the two groups. A sample (n=305; 151 prospective teacher-retirees; 154 retired teachers) was selected, while three research questions guided the study. Results showed the 16 items in the pre-retirement guidance needs are potential needs for teachers entering retirement (Item’s RSI>0.05), and the 16 items in the retrospective retirement guidance needs are areas that retired teachers opined they missed while preparing for retirement (Item’s RSI>0.05). Prospective retirees and retired teachers also ranked guidance needs in different orders, but they tallied two items of needs. The findings underpin the necessity for periodically administering retirement preparedness and retirement readiness instruments to workers to provide person-fit retirement counseling as they advance toward retirement.

Abstract

The study of meaning, in philosophy and psychology, is important to reveal the influences on individual well-being, including optimism. This systematic literature review examined various factors, such as social media, family environment, education, and personal experiences, influencing Generation Z's perception of the meaning of life and their optimism. The researcher employed the PRISMA model to select articles included in the study. Age, gender, and spirituality are influential factors in the search for meaning in life. Age influences a person's search for life's meaning and their optimism. Gender also plays an important role; women tend to discover meaning in life through family roles and social relationships, while men tend to find meaning through achievement and independence. Spirituality, such as religious practices and spiritual beliefs, offers individuals a framework to discover the meaning of life and remain optimistic, especially through the social support of the spiritual community.

Abstract

In this fast-paced world, mental health is at a greater toll due to the continuous pressure of excellence. Emotional labor is common among mental health professionals, and with extended practice, they are more prone to compassion fatigue and job burnout. This study examined the relationship between emotional labor and compassion fatigue among mental health practitioners by considering the demographic factors (age, gender, qualifications, and experience). It employed a cross-sectional design to survey mental health practitioners. The sample (N=117) comprised male (n=50) and female (n=67) aged 24 to 61 years old. Participants were selected from hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and community health centers in collaboration with department administrators. Results showed that emotional labor was positively associated with compassion fatigue (p<0.01). Female professionals exhibited higher emotional labor and compassion fatigue levels than their male counterparts. Mental health professionals with extended job experience exhibit lower levels of emotional labor and compassion fatigue than those with less experience in the mental health field. Moreover, the results indicated that older professionals reported a lower level of emotional labor than those in the younger age group. There needs to be a supportive environment addressing the diverse factors affecting the emotional well-being of these professionals.
