Abstract

A deconstructive analysis of the Narcissus story, particularly in the short story "The Black Goat of Narcissus" by Mukodas Sinatrya, offers a new perspective on how classical mythological narratives can be interpreted in a more modern and complex context. This approach allows readers to connect narrative elements with contemporary issues such as narcissism, self-identity, and the dynamics of human relationships. By conducting a comparative analysis between the original narrative and its modern reinterpretation, this article highlights the use of deconstruction techniques to dismantle and rebuild our understanding of the characteristics of Narcissus and the social and cultural implications of the story. The article explores how the Narcissus story reflects human traits and societal dynamics and serves as a medium for self-reflection and introspection. By delving into themes such as narcissism, egoism, and the complexities of self-identity, this article demonstrates that modern literary works can be essential for understanding and dealing with evolving social and cultural dynamics. Therefore, a deconstructive analysis of the Narcissus story not only yields a deeper understanding of the complexities of human nature and its social consequences but also underscores the relevance of ancient mythological narratives in helping us respond to the challenges of the modern context.

Abstract

This article aims to present the results of a critical discourse analysis of the film Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap by director Bene Dion Rajagukguk so that people who have views or stereotypes of the Batak tribe can understand and enjoy the meaning contained in the movie and the cultural aspects within it. The type and approach applied in the research is descriptive-qualitative. The data is analyzed through Teun A. Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis model, which discusses the dimensions of text, social cognition, and social context. The results of this study show that there are stereotypes attached to Batak culture. At the macrostructure stage, it discusses several themes of the Batak culture ban. At the superstructure stage, it is found that the scheme in the film discusses the story that begins with the opening board, conflict, and the final result in the form of Mr. Domu's choice to be happy with his family even though his children violate the stereotypes of Batak culture. In the micro stage, parents use prohibitive words to their children. In the cognition stage, Bene Dion Rajagukguk has a goal to eliminate Batak cultural stereotypes that have been imposed in society. Then, in the social context stage, it provides an understanding of the need for a harmonious understanding between parents and children to create a happy continuity.

Abstract

Modern humans cannot be separated from digital technology. Interaction patterns in society attached to digital media give rise to various problems in human life in the real world. Its birth and death are uncertain in the digital world. Humans are presented with instability and helplessness. The digital world brings uncertainty to existence. This research aims to reveal human existence in the pseudo-digital world as depicted in the short story Arsip Aku di Kedalaman Krisis by Afrizal Malna. This type of research is qualitative descriptive with the perspective of literary works as social documents, explicitly looking at images of human existence. The results of this research show that (1) human images are always attractive in the real and virtual worlds, and (2) humans lose their definite identity in the world and become dependent on technology. Through this research, it is hoped that it can inform readers that a literary work in the form of a short story contains the values of human life. Literary works as social documents become criticism of the situation in the digital era. On the other hand, it indirectly reminds people that the digital world is risky if it only prioritizes technological sophistication without looking at the risks behind it.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the unique names in the Javanese language that have the meaning of water used by Padmasusastra to name the characters in the novel Rangsang Tuban. The data of this research are the names of the novel’s characters and the sentences in the novel’s text. The names have implied meanings related to water and are connected to the novel’s character, setting, and plot. The data collection technique used is reading and recording to obtain narrative units. This study aims to explain the signs and meanings when naming each character in the novel Rangsang Tuban by Padmasusastra. The theory used in this research is dynamic structuralism, which uses Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach. Primary data sources were obtained from the novel Rangsang Tuban by Padmasusastra, published in 2013. Secondary data sources are in the form of supporting articles. The concept of semiotics of signs in the form of character names and markers in the form of meaning and data proves the existence of this meaning. The method used is a qualitative description that describes the discussion based on literary works. Based on the semiotic analysis of character naming in the novel Rangsang Tuban, it can be seen: (1) a Description of the meaning of the name that describes the character, (2) a Description of the meaning of the name that shows the setting of the place and the flow of events in the story. The implications of this research contribute to the development of research theory with the concept of Peirce semiotics. They can be an analytical tool for studying modern Javanese literature, including novels.

Abstract

Few people know that swear words are not always used to express anger. They can also be used to express positive emotions, such as compliments. The phenomenon of using swear words in compliments was found on one social media, X, formerly known as Twitter. This study aims to analyze the pragmatic meanings and pragmatic functions of animal swear words in English compliments on social media X. This study is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The data were collected by observing the animal swear words-contained tweets on X. The data were analyzed by using the distributional method (the basic technique and either one of the seven extended techniques: deletion, substitution, extension, insertion, reversion, transformation, and repetition) and the identity method by referring to the theories of Hughes (2006), Ljung (2010), Kreidler (2008) , and Spears (2000). The results of the study showed that the word bitch ('female dog'; ’unpleasant woman’) was the only swear word used in compliments. The pragmatic meaning of the swear word is an utterance, meaning 'girl' or ‘guy.’ Meanwhile, the practical functions of the swear word in compliments are as an anaphoric use of epithets and noun supports. This study is expected to reduce misunderstandings among Indonesian EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students when communicating with other English speakers on social media X.

Abstract

This study explores the acquisition of word classes among deaf students in special education over one academic year (2023/2024), focusing on developing their language skills. Through the analysis of 668 words categorized according to Harimurti Kridalaksana's theory, the research reveals that nouns dominate (37.4%), followed by verbs (22.4%), adjectives (14.9%), adverbs (11.9%), pronouns (7.5%), conjunctions (4.5%), and prepositions (1.2%). These findings suggest that hard-of-hearing children or deaf students focus on concrete objects and actions, indicating a reliance on tangible language in communication. The lower use of pronouns, conjunctions, and prepositions points to more superficial sentence structures, highlighting the need for explicit naming and connections in their writing. The study underscores the need for educators to adapt their teaching strategies to support language acquisition for deaf students better. It recommends bilingual interventions integrating sign and spoken language, emphasizing visual and contextually relevant instruction. The study also calls for targeted support in teaching verbs and adjectives. It advocates for creating interactive, experiential learning environments that foster emotional support and engagement, which can enhance language mastery and communication skills. Additionally, the research highlights the importance of professional development for educators to address the unique linguistic and cognitive challenges faced by deaf students. Finally, it encourages longitudinal research to investigate linguistic dimensions in their language acquisition further. This study aims to contribute to more effective educational practices that promote optimal language development and social integration for deaf children

Abstract

Acquisition in toddlerhood is undoubtedly different. This is influenced by various factors such as environment, age, stimulation, and the maturity of the speech apparatus. Toddler language acquisition can be seen from the pronunciation of the words used. Children still cannot pronounce /s/or/r/, but some toddlers are already mastering it. In addition, at this age, some toddlers can convey messages pragmatically. Therefore, this study aims to describe children's phonological acquisition in the pre-operational period and children's politeness speech acts in the pre-operational period. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with a Psychopragmatic approach. The data source is pre-operational children or 3-4 years old. The data in this study are words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. Data collection is done by using the observation method with a note-taking technique. This method is realized by using advanced techniques like free listening techniques. This study showed that language acquisition in pre-operational children is in the form of sound changes /l/ to /n/ and /y/ and/s/ to /c/. The acquisition of pragmatics in children focuses on the types of politeness speech acts and the strategies used. The benefit of this study is to provide readers with an understanding that the phonological mastery of children aged 3-4 years is different and unique. In addition, children can reasonably convey speech acts

Abstract

The study of existentialist feminism is vital in advancing women's lives. This study of feminism was initiated by Simone de Beauvoir, who fought for women's existence in her time. Her theory has also considerably influenced society's views towards women in the realm of feminism. This study aims to identify the basic concepts of existentialist feminism in Arthur Miller’s novella Fatātun ‘Ādiyah, translated into Arabic by Tala’at as-Shayeb, including 1) Otherness, 2) Immanence and Transcendence, and 3) freedom. In addition, it also analyzes the strategies carried out by female characters in the novella to advance their lives, as in the study of existentialist feminism, including 1) women become intellectuals, 2) women can work, 3) women can achieve social transformation, and 4) women can reject their Otherness. This descriptive qualitative research uses reading and recording techniques in data collection and analysis using the Miles and Huberman analysis technique. The results of this study show that women can leave the status of Objects and the limits of their Immanence and achieve freedom and Subject status for themselves. Thus, female characters will become independent and achieve gender equality and freedom for themselves. The benefit of this research is that it provides insights for society to respect each other more and consider everything equal without discriminating, especially in the context of gender.

Abstract

This study aims to identify forms of simulacra, including signs, images, and codes, in the Webtoon Virgo and The Sparkling by Anisha Nisfihani. The research applies Jean Baudrillard's simulacra theory, which explains that representations and technological simulations have replaced contemporary reality. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a narrative analysis approach, utilizing data in the form of text and images from the Webtoon. The analysis reveals 71 forms of simulacra, consisting of 29 signs, such as guitars and costumes, 28 codes, such as "rental" and "synesthesia," and 14 images, such as the cool blue color or the smell of burning. Where each element conveys profound meanings that vary according to individual interpretation. The research demonstrates that Webtoons, as a form of cyber literature, are not merely entertaining but also encompass diverse meanings that illustrate how digital culture and media technology shape the understanding of reality. This study is expected to contribute to broadening insights into the application of simulacra theory in popular literature, particularly in understanding the role of Webtoons as an innovative platform in contemporary literature.
