Abstract

Bojonegoro, as one of the regions in East Java, has a unique tradition, the ritual of taking fire, which is usually carried out when there is a big event in Bojonegoro City. This study aims to analyze the function and cultural value of the ritual of taking fire in Kayangan Api for the people of Bojonegoro. The function theory of William R. Bascom explains that literature has several functional values, namely, as a form of entertainment, a tool for the ratification of cultural institutions and institutions, education, and a tool of coercion. As well as Koentjaraningrat Value Theory. The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive. The data collection techniques used were observation, interviews with key players, documentation, and notes during the event. This research shows that Kayangan Api, as a tourist attraction, has an entertainment function and social value in its story. Taking a fire is a tradition in Bojonegoro and a way to show local art. The stages of the procession of taking the fire start from the slametan the day before the taking of the fire and the taking of the fire by the locksmith, which is then relayed from the locksmith to the sub-district head which will later be given to the torch-carrying team to the pavilion in the square. Some values can be taken from the procession of taking the fire, namely social values that can be seen from the cooperation between the management of the fire garden and the culture and tourism office of the city of Bojonegoro who work together to prepare the event and from the story of the fire garden itself, besides that there are religious values found in the implementation of slametan as a form of gratitude and asking for safety during the event.

Abstract

This study analyzes the relevance between physical structure and inner structure in the poem Kangen by W.S. Rendra, found in a collection of poems entitled Empat Kumpulan Sajak bagian Malam Stanza. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this study applies reading and recording techniques to analyze written data. Structural theory describes various structures of the poem, focusing on its physical and inner elements. Physical elements include the selection of connotative diction, figurative language such as metaphor, hyperbole, repetition, concrete words, visual imagery, and low rhythm or beat. In addition, typographic elements, such as the use of capital letters and the use of complete punctuation, are also examined. Meanwhile, the inner structure involves the feeling, tone, theme, and message contained in the poem. These two structures are interrelated and inseparable and provide depth to the poem's meaning. The interaction between physical and inner structures can arouse the reader's feelings so that they can fully understand and appreciate the poem's contents. Thus, the synergy between physical and inner structures contributes significantly to forming the overall meaning of the poem Kangen.

Abstract

This research analyses the escape and reconciliation of the main character in the short story ‘Tenggelam’ by Neneng Fatimah using Rollo May's existentialist psychology approach and Sigmund Freud's literary psychology. The method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach. Researchers repeatedly read the story to identify mental and emotional dynamics and self-defense mechanisms and resolve the main character's inner conflict.  The results showed that the main character's escape involved anxiety, guilt, and a form of love. This escape is realized through self-isolation and rejection of interaction with the surrounding environment, reflecting the character's efforts to deal with inner conflict and search for the meaning of his life. Reconciliation begins to appear when the main character faces the reality of his life with courage and accepts his condition. This reconciliation becomes the peak of emotional transformation, shown through accepting reality and building better relationships with people around her. This research is expected to contribute to the study of literary psychology by highlighting how characters' inner conflicts can be analyzed through a psychological perspective and the relevance of the theme of escape and reconciliation in the context of human life in general. The findings enrich the understanding of the relationship between literature and individual psychological dynamics.

Abstract

Children's fable stories are closely related to good values that become a supporting tool for children's growth process. Since narrative in storytelling is critical, this study aims to dissect the potential and functional structure in narratological studies and explore the moral values in the fabled story Al-Nahlah wa An-Namlah by Ridwan Syukri. This story is one of the Arabic children's stories in the Qashah lil Athfal anthology, with most of the stories belonging to the fable genre. The theory used in this research is narratology based on the perspective of A.J. Greimas. The method applied is descriptive qualitative. The data sources in this research are divided into two: (1) primary data sources, namely the fabled story An-Nahlah wa An-Namlah by Ridwan Syukri, and (2) secondary data sources, which are taken from various literature reviews to support the analysis process in this study. The data analysis technique follows the perspective of Miles and Huberman, which includes data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study show that the story of Al-Nahlah wa An-Namlah has a perfect actantial structure. In addition, the functional structure fulfills all the required stages according to the functional structure in general. After analyzing both structures, the researcher concluded that there are two central values, namely (1) hard work and (2) care, which are undoubtedly essential to introduce to children to have moral learning since childhood.

Abstract

This research explores the linguistic and cultural dimensions of dwarf creatures' names in Indonesian mythology. The main focus is analyzing the referential system in naming dwarf creatures and revealing their socio-cultural functions in society. Using a qualitative approach with ethnographic design, this study analyzes data from folklore documentation and ethnographic records. The results show that the referential system in naming dwarf creatures refers to various aspects such as physical characteristics (Uhang Pandak, Manusia Katai), traits and behaviors (Tuyul, Mentek), and geographical locations and mythological origins (Suku Mante, Suku Oni). Culturally, dwarf creatures function as complex social control mechanisms, covering aspects of economic morality (Tuyul), human-nature relationships (Mentek, Orang Bunian), and social identity (Ebu Gogo). This research reveals that the existence of dwarf creatures in Indonesian mythology is not merely a supernatural construction but represents a belief system reflecting the archipelagic society's values, norms, and local wisdom.

Abstract

Ecocritical studies in literature have increasingly developed alongside growing awareness of the relationship between humans and the environment. The novel Mausim al-Hijrah ila al-Syimal by Tayyib Salih, set in Sudan, presents a narrative about human interaction with nature in a postcolonial context. This study aims to analyze the representation of human-environment relationships in the novel using Greg Garrard’s ecocritical approach. The focus of this study includes six key concepts of Greg Garrard’s ecocriticism: pastoral, pollution, wilderness, apocalypse, dwelling, and animals. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with an ecocritical approach. Data collection techniques include reading, marking, and noting relevant texts. Data analysis follows Miles and Huberman’s framework: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal two main types of human-environment relationships in the novel. The conflictual relationship is reflected in (1) pollution, symbolizing modernization and its detrimental effects on the environment; (2) wilderness, portraying human struggles and powerlessness against nature’s forces; and (3) apocalypse, depicted through natural disasters like catastrophic floods that disrupt society. Meanwhile, the harmonious relationship is illustrated in (1) pastoral, representing nostalgia for rural life and criticism of modernization; (2) dwelling, highlighting the emotional attachment between humans and their living spaces; and (3) animals, showing their role in daily life as part of the social and ecological system. These findings indicate that Mausim al-Hijrah ila al-Syimal not only critiques environmental exploitation and modernization’s impact but also emphasizes human attachment to nature. This study is expected to expand the understanding of ecocriticism in postcolonial literature and uncover the complexity of human-environment interactions.

Abstract

Generation Z has widely utilized podcasts with various appealing popular languages in the last decade. This research aims to examine the Ancur Podcast about students' learning motivation, as evidenced by the World Top 20 Education Poll forum in 2024, where Indonesia ranked 67th out of 203 countries in the field of education, which is one of the causes of declining student motivation. This study aims to describe the language style used in the conversations of the Ancur Podcast as a medium to motivate students to learn, employing a hermeneutic approach based on Jurgen Habermas's theory. This research utilizes a descriptive qualitative method through observation and note-taking to identify the language styles and the sentences that motivate students in their learning. Based on the analysis results regarding the use of language styles in the Ancur Podcast audio, several figures of speech are employed, such as metaphor, metonymy, euphemism, cynicism, tautology, correction, and exclamation. The percentage of usage for these figures of speech includes metaphor 11%, metonymy 16%, euphemism 37%, cynicism 5%, tautology 5%, correction 11%, and exclamation 16%. Abstract

The rapid development of the internet has given birth to several influential platforms, such as social media. The increasing use of social media triggers the use of a particular community's distinctive language that reflects its culture. This study analyzes the buying and selling registers, functions, norms, and values of the Indonesian SEO Community (KSI). This qualitative research uses research in the form of a selling' feature (chat) sourced from the KS I Telegram group. The data was collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and field notes. The analysis process occurs in the register, morphology, and function analysis stages. Using the theory of the formation of the wordKridalaksana (1992) and Yule (2010), it was found that the KSI register was mainly in the form of basic morphemes or did not undergo the formation process. Other formation processes are abbreviation, the merger of two non-predictive words (phrases), affixation or derivation, compounding (merging), and coinage (combination). Meanwhile, the function of using registers analyzed using the Thurlow & Brown framework (2003) is dominated by SEO terminology. Other registers also function for communication efficiency, persuasiveness, greetings, pronouns, informativeness, and transactions. A significant finding in this study is that instant messaging has a different context of use and pressure than other digital media. This is reflected in checkout registers that function as promotional closures and have lower pressure on buyers than TikTok live broadcasts. In addition, using neutral terms such as agan, colleague, guys, everyone, all, and mbah reflects inclusive and egalitarian community management. Through register analysis from the perspective of Digital Ethnography, the implications of this research can be used by business people to maximize their sales in the digital space.
