Abstract

This study examines the existential crisis of the main character in Putu Wijaya's novel Lho using Rollo May's existential psychology theory. The primary aim of this research is to analyze the concepts of being-in-the-world (existence) and non-being (non-existence) in the life journey of the main character. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data consisting of the main character's dialogues and monologues. The findings reveal that the concept of being-in-the-world is represented through three dimensions: (1) the character's relationship with the physical environment (Umwelt), (2) the character's relationship with others (Mitwelt), and (3) the character's relationship with themselves (Eigenwelt). Meanwhile, the concept of nonbeing is represented through: (1) fear of consequences, (2) a crisis of trust, and (3) destructive behavior. These findings do not function merely as adverse conditions but as forces that shape the character’s efforts to negotiate meaning and existence. This study aims to provide a deeper understanding of how the concepts of being-in-the-world and non-being can be applied to explain individual existential crises in literary studies, as well as in broader human experiences.

Abstract

This study, entitled “An Analysis of Abraham Maslow's Humanistic Psychology in the Character Ale in Brian Khrisna's Novel Seporsi Mie Ayam Sebelum Mati,” aims to identify the forms of need fulfillment carried out by the main character in accordance with Abraham Maslow's humanistic psychology theory. Maslow's hierarchy of needs includes physiological and psychological needs. Physiological needs include food and drink, clothing, shelter, rest, and sexual needs. Psychological needs include the need for safety, love and belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualization. The method employed in this study is a descriptive qualitative approach, aimed at understanding and describing the phenomenon in depth. The research data sources comprise the dialogues, sentences, phrases, and words of the main character found in the novel Seporsi Mie Ayam Sebelum Mati, published by Gramedia Widiasarana Indonesia (Grasindo) in 2025. The researcher acted as the primary instrument, while data collection was conducted using the read-and-record technique. Based on an analysis of Abraham Maslow's humanistic psychology theory, 30 related data points were identified, indicating that the character Ale made various efforts to fulfill his hierarchy of needs. However, not all of these needs could be fulfilled, particularly the needs for clothing, rest, and sex. Meanwhile, other needs were gradually fulfilled as the story progressed.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the myth of masculinity in novels such as Dendam, Rindu Harus Dibayar Tuntas, and its influence on the characters' personalities, as well as the implications of the characters' personalities formed by the myth of masculinity on the conflict in the novel. This research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing a literature study and document study method. This study employs Roland Barthes' theory of semiotics to analyze myths in novels, John Beynon's theory of masculinity to categorize the myth of masculinity in novels, and Sigmund Freud's theory of personality structure to examine the impact of the myth of masculinity on the character's personality. Furthermore, conflict theory in literary works is used to analyze the implications of the myth of masculinity on conflict in novels. The results of the study reveal that the novel encompasses six aspects of masculinity that influence the id, ego, and superego. Such personality structures trigger internal and external conflicts. Based on the analysis results, it is concluded that Uttas untangles the myth of masculinity in the novel Seperti Dendam, Rindu Harus Dibayar, examining its psychological, social, and political aspects. This novel also addresses the issue of toxic masculinity, a topic that deserves attention and action in society. Such complexity is evident in the novel Seperti Dendam, Rindu Harus Dibayar Tuntas. It is a work that can serve as inspiration and a means of human reflection on community issues that have been considered ordinary and commonplace, prompting a re-examination of their relevance to the current situation.

Abstract

The current events in Gaza, Palestine, are genocides that have claimed many lives. This triggered protests in various parts of the world. Various visual elements appeared, including the circulation of pro-Palestinian posters during the action. The poster is not only an ordinary publication medium, but it also conveys the anxiety of the Palestinian people and serves as a medium of emotional expression that reflects the community's feelings. This study analyzes the visual meaning, particularly in the symbols that represent the concept of anxiety, as depicted in the "قتال" poster on the official website of Brigadier Al Qassam, utilizing Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. The method used in this study is qualitative. The results of this study identified five symbols that represent anxiety and convey mythical meanings, derived from a unified understanding of connotations and denotations obtained from several selected respondents. Additionally, the researcher analyzed the meaning conveyed by the poster's color symbols. The existence of this color symbol can enhance the symbolic and emotional message it conveys. It was found that 12 dominant colors were found on the poster; the colors used tended to be dark shades. This creates a gloomy atmosphere that reflects sadness, destruction, and disaster.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the form and function of expressive speech used by the public in responding to protest news discourse on Instagram (@bbcindonesia). This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The data source is from the Instagram comment column of @bbcindonesia, related to the news of the labor protest on August 28, 2025, in Jakarta. It found 30 samples of data taken from screenshots in the Instagram comment column @bbcindonesia. This study employs a theoretical approach based on pragmatic theory, specifically examining the function of speech actions. The study's results identified seven forms of expressive speech used by the community in responding to labor protest news discourse, namely expressive forms of sadness, concern, disappointment, swearing, enthusiasm, appreciation, and prayer and hope. Furthermore, in this study, expressive speech serves two primary functions: demonstrating solidarity and expressing the community's partiality. The results of the study show that the form of expressive speech aligns with its function as a means of solidarity and support, revealing a position of partisanship. Based on the results of this research, social media users tend to align with the community or the people themselves. This research is expected to enhance readers' knowledge, particularly in the pragmatic field related to the role of speech actions in the digital realm and their impact on the dynamics of people's language, especially in addressing social issues prevalent in Indonesia.

Abstract

The role of parents is crucial in determining a child's ability to produce speech and develop vocabulary. Socioeconomic changes and parental involvement in work have led to a decrease in the intensity of communication, which has the potential to hinder children's language acquisition and social interaction. This study aims to describe the differences in language production abilities among children aged 3–4 years in Kalikapas Hamlet, Lamongan Regency, between those whose parents are employed and those whose parents are not employed. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing data collection techniques that included observation and in-depth interviews with 11 informants. The data were analysed through transcription, speech classification, and social context interpretation with triangulation of sources. The study's results indicate that there are differences in the language production abilities of children from working and non-working families. Children of non-working parents demonstrate better phonological and syntactic skills, can form complex sentences with subject-predicate-object-adverbial structures, and have more precise pronunciation. The study's results indicate that there are differences in the language production abilities of children from households with working and non-working parents. Children of non-working parents demonstrate better phonological and syntactic skills, can form complex sentences with subject-predicate-object-complement structures, and have more precise pronunciation. The results also show that children of working parents tend to have limitations in phoneme pronunciation and simple sentence construction due to lower intensity of interaction. These findings confirm that the frequency and quality of two-way conversations between children and parents play a crucial role in children's language development. A home environment rich in verbal stimulation and simple literacy activities, such as storytelling and reading together, has been shown to support the improvement of children's vocabulary and syntactic structure.

Abstract

Developments in information technology have increased access to educational videos, including those on sociology broadcast on the Pahamify Channel. The effectiveness of video communication is primarily determined by the use of illocutionary acts, which can convey more profound meaning and encourage viewers. This study aims to identify and describe the types and forms of illocutionary acts found in sociological educational videos on the Pahamify Channel playlist, and to analyze their contribution to strengthening understanding of the material. In conducting this research, the author used a descriptive qualitative methodological approach. Data collection using this method involved observation and note-taking. This study used speech analysis techniques and a descriptive qualitative analysis approach. Based on the analysis of the sociology learning videos in the Pahamify channel playlist, 9 assertive illocutionary acts, 4 directive illocutionary acts, 1 expressive act, and 1 commissive act were identified, with no declarative illocutionary acts. In addition to serving as a reference for analyzing illocutionary acts, this study also enriches the study of speech acts in educational videos, especially in mathematics.

Abstract

In communicating and using language, humans perform a speech act. The speech act analyzed in this study is representative. This speech act informs and convinces the interlocutor of the truth of what is said. This study was conducted to analyze the forms of representative speech acts in nine videos in a playlist titled "Genius Course" on the YouTube channel Fajrul fx. A qualitative descriptive approach was used as the research methodology, and a pragmatic approach was used as the theoretical approach. The researcher used the note-taking technique, in which they first watched the selected videos and recorded the representative speech acts they contained. The data used in this study were from 9 videos in the playlist titled "Genius Course" on Fajrul FX's YouTube channel. The data analysis method used in this article was the distribution method, comprising several stages: listening, analyzing representative speech types, recording, grouping, and analyzing the speech context. The results of this study include 137 representative speech acts identified through the analysis. Among the nine analyzed videos, the speech act "showing" was the most frequently used, while "demanding" was the least. This research is expected to be a learning resource for the community, especially students and researchers. The researcher also hopes that future research on speech acts, especially representative speech acts, can address the shortcomings identified in this study.

Abstract

The development of contemporary Indonesian music gave rise to a complex, metaphorical lyric style, demanding a deep understanding to uncover the hidden meaning behind the songwriter's language play. Semiotic analysis is an essential approach for dissecting the relationships between markers to bridge the gap in understanding between music creators and connoisseurs. This research has a dual purpose: to identify and analyze the representation of denotative and connotative meanings in the lyrics of the song "I'd Like to Watch You Sleeping" by Sal Priadi, and to describe the unity of meaning the author seeks to convey through language symbols. The method used is a qualitative descriptive approach with content analysis, involving the systematic processes of reading, listening, taking notes, and analyzing textual data in the form of song lyrics and audio recordings. The results showed the use of absurd and metaphorical markers such as "more often gaping", "cartoon characters on television", "the body evaporates into rain", and "playing in the clouds" which convey signs in the form of deep admiration, hope for eternity, transformation of love, and the desire to become an integral part of a lover. These findings reveal patterns of symbolic language use in contemporary song lyrics and provide insight into the construction of connotative meanings through deviations from denotative meanings. This research is expected to serve as a reference for the study of linguistics and literature and to make a practical contribution to the appreciation of contemporary Indonesian music.
