Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the appraisal system in the news text entitled “Prabowo-Gibran’s Free Nutritious Meal Program Can Create New Jobs” published by the digital news portal Liputan 6. The study is grounded in Systemic Functional Linguistics, particularly the appraisal framework, which examines how language constructs evaluative meanings, ideological positions, and interpersonal relations between writers and readers. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research focuses on linguistic units in the form of words, phrases, and clauses that contain evaluative meanings related to affect, judgment, and appreciation. The data were collected through document analysis by carefully reading the news text, identifying clauses containing appraisal elements, coding them based on appraisal categories, and interpreting their evaluative tendencies. The findings show that the news text is dominated by positive appraisal resources. Affect is realized through expressions of hope, optimism, confidence, and expectation toward the implementation of the Free Nutritious Meal Program. Judgment appears mainly in the form of capacity, portraying the program as capable of generating economic benefits, creating employment opportunities, and strengthening rural communities. Appreciation is expressed through positive evaluation and institutional support, especially by emphasizing the usefulness, feasibility, and legitimacy of the program. These findings indicate that the news writer does not merely present information neutrally but also constructs a supportive and persuasive discourse. The text positions the MBG program as a beneficial public policy and implicitly functions as a soft campaign discourse that shapes readers’ positive perception and strengthens policy legitimacy. This study confirms that appraisal analysis is useful for revealing ideological tendencies in news discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the transformation of cultural meaning in the translation of Lontar Yusuf into Indonesian to understand the changes in meaning that occur in the process of translating traditional texts rich in cultural and religious values. The research data were sourced from Lontar Yusuf Banyuwangi: Pegon Text–Transliteration–Translation and analyzed using an interpretive qualitative approach with a bounded-corpus design. The data were purposively selected based on indications of cultural significance transformations in the source and target texts. Data analysis is carried out through thematic analysis, which includes coding, category grouping, and theme interpretation, and is supported by comparing meaning components to identify the forms of meaning change that occur. The results of the study show that there are four forms of cultural meaning transformation, namely narrowing meaning, expanding meaning, generalization, and shifting spiritual meaning. The findings also show that translation strategies oriented towards the target culture are more prevalent than strategies that preserve elements of the source culture, resulting in a simplification of the representation of cultural and spiritual meaning in the translated text. This research contributes to the study of traditional text translation by deepening understanding of the transformation of cultural meaning in translation and its implications for the preservation of cultural and religious values in target texts.

Abstract

The live commerce phenomenon on the TikTok platform is experiencing rapid growth, especially ahead of Eid al-Fitr, a period marked by increased promotional activity and public consumption. This study aims to describe the form of directive speech and promotional language strategies used in TikTok live broadcasts. The research uses a pragmatic approach with a qualitative descriptive method. The research data consisted of 33 speeches obtained from five live commerce sessions on the TikTok @elzattahijab account. The account was chosen purposively because it actively uses live commerce features to promote Muslim fashion products and demonstrates intensive interaction between hosts and audiences ahead of Eid al-Fitr. Data is collected through record, listen, and record techniques, then analyzed based on the context of its use. The results of the study show that directive speech is the dominant form of speech used in live commerce activities. Speech is realized in the forms of the imperative, interrogative, and declarative, which convey the intention of directing the audience to certain actions. In addition, various promotional language strategies were found to accompany directive speech actions, including urgency, social closeness, seasonal (Eid al-Fitr), and profit-based strategies. These findings show that directive speech actions and promotional language strategies support each other in building persuasive communication during live broadcasts. Thus, the use of language in live commerce not only serves to convey product information, but also serves as a means to build audience engagement and direct their actions in the context of digital promotion.

Abstract

This research examines the pragmatic function of persona deixis in Indonesian political discourse, focusing specifically on President Prabowo Subianto's inaugural speech at the MPR Plenary Session on October 20, 2024. Previous studies on persona deixis in political speeches have largely focused on classifying deixis types without thoroughly analyzing their ideological and identity-constructing functions. This study addresses that gap by analyzing how pronoun choices construct collective identity in a post-electoral context. Using a descriptive qualitative method that combines pragmatic analysis with a critical discourse analysis (CDA) perspective, data were collected through documentation and close reading of the official speech text published by the State Secretariat of the Republic of Indonesia. Analysis was conducted through data reduction, classification of persona deixis forms (saya, kami, kita, mereka), contextual analysis, and social function interpretation. The results showed that (1) saya functions to establish personal authority and responsibility, (2) kami constructs institutional legitimacy, (3) kita builds inclusive national solidarity and collective identity; and (4) mereka marks political boundaries while simultaneously enabling reconciliation. These findings demonstrate that persona deixis operates as a multi-layered discursive strategy for legitimation, solidarity-building, and in-group/out-group management. This study contributes theoretically to pragmatic and CDA scholarship by offering an integrated analytical framework for persona deixis as an ideological instrument in political speech, and practically by advancing critical literacy toward Indonesian political language.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital communication has transformed public interaction patterns through platforms like Instagram. Instagram comment sections have become digital discursive spaces that demonstrate various forms of language use, including expressions of support, criticism, suggestions, and evaluations directed at public figures. This study aims to identify and analyze politeness strategies employed by netizens in Instagram comment columns discussing public figures from a pragmatic perspective. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach with a purposive sampling technique, data were collected from Instagram comments directed at public figures during January–March 2026. Data were analyzed using Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness theory framework, focusing on four strategy categories: bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record. The results indicate that the positive politeness strategy was dominant, with a frequency of 52%, followed by bald-on-record and off-record strategies at 24% each, and negative politeness at 4%. Personal or family content tended to elicit positive responses, while public policy content more often drew direct criticism or sarcasm. This study makes theoretical contributions to cyberpragmatics research and enhances public awareness of the importance of language politeness in digital communication.

Abstract

This study examines the use of speech acts in pragmatics, with a primary focus on the illocutionary speech acts of the Musleem.id Instagram account. The purpose of this study is to identify the types of illocutionary speech acts contained in the posts of the Musleem.id Instagram account and describe its functions based on the context of the speech. This study uses two approaches, namely methodological and theoretical. The methodological approach used is descriptive qualitative. The theoretical approach uses pragmatic analysis. The data source of this study is the posts of the Musleem.id Instagram account containing illocutionary speech acts. In this study, Searle's theory is used, which divides illocutionary speech acts into five types, namely representative, directive, expressive, commissive, and declarative, with the existence of evidence from the posts. The results of the study analyzing illocutionary speech acts in Muslim uploads.id Instagram account found 21 data, consisting of 4 representative speech act data (the functions found were indicating and stating), 8 directive speech act data (the functions found were inviting and suggesting), 6 expressive speech act data (the functions found were criticizing and stating),  2 commissive speech act data (the functions found were promising and being able), and 1 declarative speech act data (the functions found were prohibiting). The benefits of this research can theoretically contribute to linguistic studies, particularly in pragmatics, especially in illocutionary acts. In practical terms, this research can help readers better understand illocutionary speech acts.

Abstract

The development of the internet and social media has turned online news comment sections into digital public spaces where netizens express opinions, emotions, and social attitudes toward current events. This phenomenon is evident in news coverage of a mugging case in Sleman, which triggered diverse linguistic responses from digital users. This study aims to describe language variation in netizens’ comments on the Sleman mugging news, with a particular focus on code-switching and code-mixing, and to explain the social functions of these language choices. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, using comments from selected online news reports collected through purposive sampling. Data were gathered through observation and documentation techniques, then analyzed through reduction, classification, interpretation, and sociolinguistic presentation. The findings indicate that netizens’ comments exhibit diverse language variations, including informal registers, local languages, code-switching, and code-mixing. These language choices are used to emphasize attitudes, express emotions, build solidarity, and strengthen speakers’ social identities in digital space. This study contributes to the development of digital sociolinguistics and provides insight into linguistic dynamics in public responses to criminal news in online media.

Abstract

Social media has evolved into a digital public space where people can express opinions, criticism, and dissatisfaction about various political issues. One widely used form of expression is sarcasm, namely the use of sharp, demeaning language to criticize individuals and institutions. This study aims to describe the forms of sarcasm and reveal the representation of public distrust of political institutions in netizen comments on the Patinews Facebook account. The study used a qualitative approach, employing digital discourse analysis and Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis framework. The research data consisted of netizen comments on the Patinews post entitled "The DPRD, Kemanakah Disaat Rakyat Membutuhanmu?" published on August 12, 2025. Of the 1,607 available comments, 16 that contained elements of sarcasm were selected using purposive sampling. The results showed that sarcasm was represented in four main forms: negative labeling, distrust, calls for rejection, and comparative satire. The most dominant form is negative labeling, characterized by expressions such as "dagelan," "mafia," "small change," and "party officials" used to describe political institutions. Research findings indicate that sarcasm not only functions as a linguistic strategy to convey criticism, but also represents disappointment, a legitimacy crisis, and declining public trust in political institutions. Furthermore, sarcasm has evolved into a form of symbolic resistance used by society to oppose political practices deemed unfavorable to the people. This research contributes to the study of digital linguistics and discourse by demonstrating that sarcasm is a discursive practice closely related to power relations and democratic dynamics in the digital public sphere.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has encouraged the use of audiovisual learning media in literary learning in higher education. However, conventional methods still dominate literary learning, so more innovative and interesting media for students are needed. This study aims to analyze the feasibility of audio-visual-based digital storytelling on the "Dongeng Kita" YouTube channel as a literary learning medium for students of the Elementary School Teacher Education Study Program (PGSD). The research uses a qualitative, descriptive approach. Data were obtained through listening, recording, and documentation techniques for five video stories, selected purposively from a total of 723 videos on the "Dongeng Kita" channel. Data analysis was conducted using a pragmatic and pedagogical content analysis, focusing on content, presentation, language, and technical aspects. The study found that digital storytelling on the "Dongeng Kita" channel received an average score of 4.54, placing it in a very decent category. The content aspect obtained a score of 4.6, presentation 4.5, language 4.6, and technical 4.6. Digital storytelling is believed to increase students' understanding, motivation, and involvement in literary learning. This research contributes an audio-visual-based digital storytelling evaluation model that can serve as a reference for the development of technology-based literary learning media in universities.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of Indonesian language assessment for eighth-grade students based on the Pancasila Student Profile and oriented toward digital literacy. This study uses a mixed methods approach with an explanatory sequential design, focusing on the planning, implementation, and [evaluation/reporting] evaluation processes of assessment that integrate the dimensions of the Pancasila Student Profile along with the use of digital technology. The research subjects include teachers and eighth-grade students at the junior secondary school level. Data were collected through questionnaire, observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that the assessment implementation has incorporated the values of the Pancasila Student Profile, such as critical thinking, creativity, and independence, and has begun to utilize digital media in the assessment process, including online learning platforms and digital evaluation tools. However, several challenges remain, including teachers’ readiness, limited infrastructure, and varying levels of students’ digital literacy. Therefore, strengthening teachers’ competencies and improving infrastructure support are essential to optimize the implementation of assessment based on the Pancasila Student Profile and digital literacy.
