Abstract

The background of this research is the phenomenon of literary works that continue to develop within society and have even become an important part of it. For this reason, literary works need to be approached, understood, and treated appropriately, of course, with various approaches. The focus of this research includes: the forms of signs in the form of icons, indices, and symbols that are seen in each poem in the poetry collection Masih Ingatkah Kau Jalan Pulang? by Sapardi Djoko Damono and Rintik Sedu, through Charles Sanders Peirce’s Semiotics theory, then observing the Triadic relationship between Representamen, Interpretant, and Object in the form of signs in each poem in the poetry collection Masih Ingatkah Kau Jalan Pulang? by Sapardi Djoko Damono and Rintik Sedu. The purpose of this study is to describe the forms of signs in the form of icons, indices, and symbols that are visible and to describe the triadic relationship between the representative, interpreter, and object in the form of signs in each poem in the poetry collection Masih Ingatkah Kau Jalan Pulang? by Sapardi Djoko Damono and Rintik Sedu. This study is a qualitative descriptive study. The data used in this study is diction, which consists of words, phrases, sentences, stanzas, and lines in each poem studied. Based on research into the poetry collection Masih Ingatkah Kau Jalan Pulang? by Sapardi Djoko Damono, the iconicity consists of icons, indices, and symbols. This study also identified a triadic connection in several examples of poetry. These findings help readers of the poetry collection understand each Iconic sign presented by Sapardi Djoko Damono and Rintik Sedu as poets.

Abstract

The pitonan baby tradition is one of the birth rituals in Javanese culture that continues to be practiced from generation to generation and contains various symbols that represent the community's social, spiritual, and religious values. Over time, this tradition has undergone acculturation between Javanese culture and Islamic teachings, a process that occurs adaptively through the reinterpretation of traditional symbols. This study aims to analyze the symbolic meanings and forms of Javanese–Islamic cultural acculturation in the pitonan baby tradition in Wongsorejo Village, Banyuwangi, using Roland Barthes's semiotic approach. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with an interpretative orientation. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with key informants, participant observation of the implementation of the pitonan baby ritual, and visual documentation supported by field notes. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive model of Matthew B. Miles and A. Michael Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The interpretation of symbols was carried out through denotative, connotative, and mythological analyses to reveal ideological meanings within cultural practices. The findings indicate that symbols in the pitonan tradition, such as tujuh kulub, iwel-iwel, red and white jenang, nasi buceng, the ritual of stepping on jenang, and the object-selection procession, represent a dynamic process of Javanese–Islamic cultural acculturation. This acculturation process is characterized by three main forms: reinterpretation of symbolic meanings in elements such as tujuh kulub, jenang, and tumpeng; partial resistance to earlier belief elements found in iwel-iwel and the stepping-on-jenang ritual; and selective elimination of elements considered inconsistent with the value of tauhid, such as fortune-telling interpretations through object selection. In addition, the role of the kiai as an agent of cultural reinterpretation is significant in directing the transformation of symbolic meanings toward Islamic values. The pitonan baby tradition is no longer understood as a magical practice but rather as a medium of prayer, gratitude, and reinforcement of the value of tauhid within community life. This study contributes theoretically to the development of cultural semiotic studies and enhances understanding of symbolic negotiation processes within Javanese–Islamic cultural acculturation.

Abstract

This study examines the use of directive and assertive speech in Najwa Shihab's interrogative rhetoric on the Mata Najwa podcast, employing the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach. This research departs from the view that journalistic questions are not neutral but function as a discursive strategy laden with power relations and ideologies. The method used is a descriptive qualitative method with a pragmatic theoretical framework (Searle's speech act) and Fairclough's three-dimensional CDA model, including text analysis, discursive practices, and social practices. The research data consists of Najwa Shihab's speech, which contains directive and assertive statements in the form of interrogative rhetoric, transcribed from Mata Najwa's podcast episodes. Data collection is conducted through listening, recording, and document study, while data analysis proceeds through the stages of identification, classification, pragmatic interpretation, and critical discourse analysis. The results of the study identified three main patterns of the use of speech in Najwa Shihab's interrogative rhetoric, namely: (1) indirect directive speech to direct the interpretation of the source, (2) explicit directive speech to control the focus and flow of argumentation, and (3) assertive speech in the form of interrogative to implicit insert ideological claims and assumptions. These three patterns systematically frame the speakers within the logic of public accountability, while simultaneously strengthening the media as a hegemonic actor in the production and control of discourse. From the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis, the practice reproduces the ideology of state criticism, the supremacy of public rationality, and the demands of institutional responsibility. The novelty of this research lies in integrating directive and assertive speech analysis into the format of interrogative rhetoric in broadcast media, demonstrating that journalistic questions are not neutral but function as a discursive strategy to frame meaning, direct interpretation, and shape public awareness. Thus, the interrogative rhetoric in the Mata Najwa podcast is understood as a language practice that actively reproduces power relations and ideologies in the digital public space.

Abstract

Representations of women in commercial media are often trapped in commodification practices that reduce gender identity to mere visual objects. Soap advertisements serve as one of the spaces that consistently exploit the female body to build product appeal through narrow beauty standards. This study aims to examine in depth the practices of sexual objectification of women in soap advertisements through visual and verbal discourse constructions. The research method employed is a descriptive qualitative approach with a Critical Discourse Analysis framework, using Sara Mills' model. The research data sources consist of three video advertisements, namely GIV White Body Wash, LUX Botanicals Body Wash, and Biore Body Foam, selected based on the intensity of visual body representation and their status as contemporary advertisements in the same product category. Data analysis techniques examined subject-object positions and the reader/viewer's position to determine how the text constructs the role of women. The results indicate that sexual objectification functions not only through sensual physical visual displays but also through persuasive language that positions women's skin as the center of commodification within the logic of capitalism. Women are positioned as passive objects whose beauty is validated by an external gaze. At the same time, the self-empowerment narratives presented tend to be pseudo-empowerment as they remain controlled by market interests. This research provides substantial benefits as a theoretical reference in media and gender studies and offers a critical foundation for the development of media literacy in society. Practically, these findings encourage awareness among advertising industry players and consumers to be more critical of ideologies that normalize the objectification of the female body in the public sphere.

Abstract

This study examines the denotative and connotative meanings in the book Celoteh R.A. Kartini, which represents a collection of Kartini’s thoughts reflecting women’s experiences during the colonial era. Although Kartini’s ideas have been widely discussed in literary and historical studies, research specifically focusing on the analysis of denotative and connotative meanings in this work remains limited. Therefore, this study aims to identify, analyze, and describe the forms and meanings of denotative and connotative expressions in the text. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a semantic approach. Data were collected through close reading and note-taking, and then analyzed using classification and interpretation based on semantic categories. The findings reveal 24 data points, comprising 12 denotative and 12 connotative instances. Denotative meanings tend to convey explicit, literal ideas, while connotative meanings reflect deeper emotional, cultural, and ideological nuances, particularly regarding the oppression and struggles of women in the colonial period. These findings indicate that Kartini’s language is not only informative but also expressive, implicitly conveying criticism of social injustice and gender inequality. The connotative meanings, in particular, strengthen the rhetorical power of Kartini’s expressions in articulating resistance and hope. This study contributes to semantic and literary studies by enriching the analysis of meaning in historical texts and providing insights into how language functions as a medium for expressing women’s voices and social realities.

Abstract

Discourse in art exhibitions serves as a communication bridge, translating visual ideas that are often abstract and polysemous. This research aims to describe the forms and connotative meanings of figurative language used in the descriptive discourse of the ARTJOG 2025 exhibition, "Motif: Amalan." This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach from a stylistic perspective. The research data consist of words, phrases, and sentences containing figurative language, collected through observation and note-taking from catalogs and artwork labels on the official ARTJOG 2025 website. Data analysis was conducted using the referential identity method based on Gorys Keraf's theory of figure of speech. The results show 16 instances of figurative language, including personification, metaphor, simile, and synecdoche. The dominance of personification (62.5%) indicates a curatorial effort to position artworks as active subjects capable of performing real actions, aligned with the exhibition's theme. The use of such figurative language plays a crucial role in transforming visual elements and the artists' complex philosophies into emotional narratives that are easily understood by the audience.

Abstract

The development of social media has encouraged the emergence of various forms of social criticism, including increasingly creative ones, such as memes that combine visual and verbal elements. In the context of demonstrations against the 2025 DPR RI policy on platform X, memes are a means many people use to convey criticism indirectly through satirical language. This phenomenon shows a shift in the form of social criticism communication from conventional verbal expressions to multimodal digital discourses that rely on linguistic strategies and pragmatic contexts. This study aims to analyze the style of satirical language as a form of social criticism in netizens' memes against the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia on platform X, using a pragmatic approach that combines pragmatic and stylistic studies, focusing on pragmatic aspects such as speech acts and situational context. Data were analyzed using qualitative descriptive methods collected through the free and capable engagement listening technique, analyzed by the referential matching method, and presented formally and informally. In this study, several memes were found that use elements of language style, such as sarcasm, irony, and metaphor, to convey social criticism subtly yet sharply, and how pragmatic contexts, such as speech and implication, strengthen satirical messages in digital discourse. The results showed that memes employ various satirical language styles, especially sarcasm, irony, metaphors, and hyperbole, to convey criticism implicitly yet sharply. Pragmatically, the meme contains expressive, representative, and directive speech, as well as unconventional implications that reinforce the message of criticism of the House of Representatives' policies and behavior. In addition, the combination of visual and verbal elements in memes has proven effective in conveying social criticism by attracting attention, making it easier to understand, and expanding the audience's reach. This research contributes to the development of pragmatic studies on digital discourse and provides an understanding of the role of memes as a medium of social criticism in contemporary social communication.

Abstract

This study aims to uncover the ideological dynamics and power relations in Kompas.com news about the National Apprenticeship Program using the Norman Fairclough model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The focus of the study is directed at two news texts that display the contradiction of representation between the legitimacy of the government and the resistance of labor unions, namely "Deputy Minister of Labor Calls Internship Program a Golden Bridge to the World of Work" (November 4, 2025) and "Trade Union Regarding the Ministry of Labor's Internship Program: Insulting Undergraduate Graduates" (October 14, 2025). The research method of this study is qualitative, with three stages of Fairclough's analysis: textual dimensions, discourse practices, and social practices. The results show that the government uses the language of development and modernization to legitimize apprenticeship policies through euphemistic strategies and progressive metaphors. At the same time, trade unions display resistant discourses that emphasize structural inequality and the degradation of workers' dignity. This contradiction of meaning confirms that the media has become an arena of hegemony that articulates and negotiates power. Through this study, critical discourse analysis can be seen as an important context in identifying the hidden ideologies behind news construction and fostering people's critical literacy of the media's language.
