The aims of this journal is to provide a venue for researchers, academicians and practitioners for publishing the original articles or review articles. The main focus of the journal is on language teaching and pedagogy work. We are particularly interested on Language and Teaching Methodologies, Pedagogical Techniques, Technology in Language Teaching, Technology in Language Teaching such as CALL and MALL and Curriculum Development and Material design. Although the focus is primarily on research on language education, we will also consider papers in other areas of applied linguistics such as Sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and neurolinguistics, Language and culture, cognition, and pragmatics and Theories and practice in related fields.

Abstract

This research is a development research that aims to develop an instructional strategy and suitable materials for an English crash course program at Neroa School, a non-formal educational institution in Soppeng Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. This research is a continuation of previous research conducted by researchers that focused on identifying the needs of Buginese learners in learning English as a foreign language. Researchers adopted the ADDIE Model developed by Branch (2009), covering the stages of analysis, design, develop, implementation, and evaluation. The research instrument used was a questionnaire at the stage of needs analysis and product validation as well as pre-test and post-test sheets at the implementation stage before the evaluation process which contained product revisions. Data analysis is presented in a statistically qualitative descriptive form. This research produces a teaching material with the genre of Grammar for Speaking accompanied by teaching strategies that are in line with the material.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Social media is a tool of information and communication technology used by people to communicate online. There are many kinds of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, etc. Due to the pandemic in the last two years, students and teachers use virtual or online learning which uses several applications or social media sites. The purpose of this research is to help the EFL learners’ to find out what type of social media is most effectively used for speaking skill. The method used in this study is a qualitative approach with a library research method, there are 15 articles compared in this study with a time span of the last 6 years. The results of this study, based on 15 articles that have been reviewed, show that all types of social media when used in learning English are effective. In this case it is said to be effective based on the type of learning and the skills learned but the researcher found that the most popular social media and most often used by EFL to improve their speaking skill in the last 6 years is the YouTube application.

Abstract

English is one of the subject that learners must be follow in Indonesia such as in play group, elementary school, junior high school, senior high school even in a college. It will have a long time for the students learn this subject. It still doesn't work as we hope, the students reason that their lack of speaking coming from the media of teachingteaching, ascribe from the teaching strategy and the material. It is found from pondok pesantren Darul Ulum Ath Thahiriyah paladang pinrang (2018), the teacher found that there are 95% students’ classification speaking is poor, and 5% fair in this school. Although the government and the expert had been put a big attention in this subject but a problem still occurring until today, therefore the researcher decided to involve a learning strategy on this paper, the researcher will analyze the students’ need to find out the problems, that can helps the students’ and teacher to be solve it It will analyze and formulate by long step and recur, besides it will be supporting by several sources such as the students, alumnus and the teacher, this research question is what are the students of SMPN 1 problems in teaching learning english ?The researcher had been applied apply a mixed method, quantitative and descriptive approaches. There are two instruments used, Interview and questioners. The finding is the teacher's interview said that students have a lack pay attention in learning this subject, it causes by the teacher strategy that unsuitable with the students' needs, it supports by some suggestion of the alumni, and students' expectation that they want to more variant in speaking activity. The students rarely hope to cover this because of it is the international language, several hope it can help to take a scholarship, some of them said because they want to abroad and speak with the native speaker, and most of them hope it can help their dream, their ambition, the researcher also has given four choices of media, these are a picture, video, song, and story, there are 8 students choose the story, 10 students choose the picture, 36 students choose song and 36 also choose video. The students’ lack occurring by the teaching learning process that unsuitable with them, they have lot of hopes in teaching learning as EFL Learner including students high expect to the activities in learning process are dominated by answer the question, students expect that they could participating in a conversation of English daily, they expect high to communicate with a native speaker, and of students expect to participating in class discussion using English to ask or answer question

Abstract

This research is aimed at finding out: How isthe effectiveness of Content - Based Instruction in improving the students’ writing ability of the tenth year students.To achieve the goal of this study. The researcher did experimental research was used as a method in this study and research design used was a quasi experimental. The study was carried out in two classes, they are the experimental group and controlgroup. The population of this research were the tenth class of Al-Wahid Papein academic year 2018-2019. X MIA was chosen as the experimental group and X IIS were chosen as the control group. The instruments for collecting the data were writing test, questionnaire, and observation sheet. The data obtained through the test were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively.Based on the resultof the data analysis, the researcher finding shows that the students’ writing ability of the experimental group has a significan different from the control group. The students could developing and generate their ideas bycontent-based instruction and make the students more enthusiastic in the writing activities. All students could understand and respond to the researcher’ instructions and explanations. It is proved by the data that the mean score of the experimental group is higher than control group ( 76.18 > 60.32), and the t-test value is higher than t-table value ( 4.905> 1.685). The result of this study indicates that the use of content-based instruction significantly improves the students writing ability. The researcher finding that the students’ have positive attitude toward the use of content-based instruction. It is proved by the data from questionnaire that the students’ mean score of attitude is 102.21, which is categorized as very high, and the data from observation sheet that the percentage of positive items is higher that negative items ( 89.3 > 53,9 ).

Abstract

The aimed of this study was to knowing students' perceptions about the task of making videos on English speaking skills of English department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare. This study also aims at how the effect of using video making tasks on students' speaking skills. And this research is expected to increase knowledge and information in the teaching and learning process. To improve students' speaking understanding, researchers used qualitative research methods. The subjects in this study were the 8th of English department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare in the force 2016, totaling 10 people. In addition, data was collected through interviews. The results showed that students generally liked the video making task and could improve their speaking skills. The task of making this video is to develop speaking components such as vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency in speaking. Researchers also found several advantages of the video making task from student perceptions, namely: making students able to use technology, increasing creativity, increasing self-confidence, and making students challenged to deepen language.

Abstract

This research is based on students' problems related to learning English, especially in students' reading comprehension skills, where students have difficulty understanding the content of texts in English lessons, especially in terms of reading texts. In addition, this study applies the use of Herringbone Technique to assist students in improving their reading comprehension skills. Reading is defined as a scanning process that involves deciphering symbols, words to explain the meaning contained. Herringbone technique is a technique that can give students the opportunity to more easily find ideas contained in a reading with six comprehension questions (5W+1H). The researcher used a pre-experimental design, with two groups of test designs including pre-test and post-test. The research sample consisted of 21 students from one class taken from the eighth grade population at UPT SMP Negeri 2 Pangsid. This research consists of three stages including: preparation stage, implementation stage, and data analysis stage. The instrument used in this study is a reading comprehension test sheet which aims to determine the extent to which students' learning abilities are. The results of the tests carried out and data analysis found that students' reading comprehension abilities increased after treatment. With this, the average value of the pretest is 55.23 and the postest is 78.09. From these data, the reading comprehension ability of eighth graders at UPT SMP Negeri 2 Pangsid increased by using the Herrinbone technique. By analyzing the data manually, the result of the t-test score (11.442) is higher than the t-table (a 0.05, from df 21-1 = 20 students = 1.725 This means that the achievement of the eighth grade students' reading comprehension ability at UPT SMP Negeri 2 Pangsid has a significant increase. In conclusion, the use of the Herringbone technique can and is used to improve the understanding of eighth grade students at UPT SMP Negeri 2 Pangsid for the 2021/2022 academic year.

Abstract

This research was conducted to know how the teachers effect on their students. In particular, the influence of teacher creativity on students' interest in learning in seventh grade SMP Negeri 2 Parepare. Teacher creativity is one way to increase student interest in learning, therefore researchers researched to determine how efficiently the influence of teachers on students in seventh grade of Junior High School 2 Parepare. This type of research is a qualitative one conducted with teachers and students. The population of this research is the seventh grade of junior high school 2 Parepare. The respondents of this study consisted of 3 seventh grade teachers. Researchers conducted interview and observation to obtain data. The results showed that the teacher's creativity in teaching greatly increased student interest in learning. Students become very enthusiastic and excited about the teaching and learning process. Especially in this modern era, teaching millennial children is very difficult; therefore it requires high teacher creativity.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to improve students speaking skill because the describing picture strategy method is a good method to improve students speaking skill, students self-confidence is also better able to build, students can also be more active in class and learn in English. The researcher use pre-experimental to carry out their research. The population in this study were all students eight class of SMPN 22 Barru for academic year 2021-2022. The researcher took one class of the second grade students at SMPN 22 Barru as the sample. It was class VIII-1 consisted of 32 students. The researcher used a oral test as the instrument to get the data. To collect the data, the researcher gave students twice test, there are pre-test and post-test. The researcher gave directions to students namely describing picture in the class with a minimum speaking duration of 5 minutes for the pre-test. The researcher asked the students to describe norally the picture which given by the researcher for the post-test.The results of the data analysis of the students average scores obtained by researchers during the study were 38.3 in pre-test and 83.92 in post-test. The speaking ability of class VIII-1 students at UPTD SMPN 22 Barru improved after being taught using describing picture strategy. This is reinforced by the results of the t-test where H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted.

Abstract

Interviewing technique was attractived technique to implement on English learning process specially in speaking field of the students that still low, caused of teachers teachnique that made students less of self-confidence and doesn’t actively in learning process. It was proved based on the students achievment in researchers observatioan data which was showed that their speaking ability was still low. Therefore, the objective of this research was to find out whether or not the implementation of interviewing technique can increase students speaking ability at the tenth grade students of SMAN 4 Parepare in online class by using whatsapp group as a teaching media. The researcher applied pre-experimental class design with one group pretest and posttest design. The population of this research was tenth grade students of SMAN 4 Parepare academic year 2020/2021. The sample of this research was taken by using purposive sampling which was class X MIPA 3 that consisted of 20 students as a samples. The result of data analysis showed that the students speaking ability was increased. It was proved by the mean score in pretest was 56,3 while the mean score in posttest was 80,95. So, the score of t-test 2,217 was greater than t-table th degree of freedom (df = n − 1) 19 for 0,05 level of significance. It can be said that the implementing of interviewing technique increased the students speaking ability at the tenth grade students of SMAN 4 Parepare.

Abstract

Analysis is an investigation of an event to find out the actual situation during the COVID-19 pandemic in a situation where large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) were imposed. The purpose of this research is to find out that objective of the research the students' difficulties in learning English and the factors that influence these difficulties at SMP NEGERI 1 Parepare.This type of research is a descriptive type of research using a qualitative approach which is carried out to find the various difficulties experienced by students in learning English at Smp Negeri 1 Parepare. This descriptive study is more focused on collecting data to describe the actual situation that occurs in the field using questionnaires and interviews measured by a Likert scale. Based on the results obtained through the distribution of questionnaires containing statements about the difficulties of learning English during the COVID-19 pandemic, which amounted to sixteen statements to ten students and ten question addressed to one English teacher at Smp Negeri 1 Parepare. Two factors are obtained, namely internal factors, namely learning abilities and external factors, namely the lack of costs and communication tools used by students.
