Abstract

Research on tasybih (simile) in Arabic literature has predominantly focused on modern literary works, while the characteristics of tasybih in classical Arabic poetry, particularly the Mu‘allaqāt of Imruʾ al-Qays, remain underexplored. This study aims to identify the types, purposes, and dominant patterns of tasybih in two qaṣidahs by Imruʾ al-Qays, namely Qifā Nabki Min Dhikrā Ḥabībin wa Manzili and Liman Ṭalalun Bayna al-Judayyati wa al-Jabali, from the perspective of ʿilm al-bayān. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using observation and note-taking techniques. The data consisted of poetic verses containing tasybih, which were analyzed by identifying the elements of tasybih, classifying its types based on the theory of Ali al-Jarim and Mustafa Amin, and examining their rhetorical purposes. The findings reveal 14 instances of tasybih, comprising eight instances in Qifā Nabki Min Dhikrā Ḥabībin wa Manzili and six instances in Liman Ṭalalun Bayna al-Judayyati wa al-Jabali. The dominant type is tasybih mursal mujmal, while the most frequent rhetorical purpose is tazyīn al-musyabbah (embellishing the subject of comparison). Furthermore, the objects of comparison are predominantly drawn from the natural environment and the daily life of pre-Islamic Arab society, creating vivid visual imagery, strengthening emotional expression, and enhancing the aesthetic quality of the poems. This study contributes by mapping the dominant patterns of tasybih, identifying its rhetorical tendencies, and describing the characteristics of comparative imagery in Imruʾ al-Qays's Jahiliyyah poetry, thereby enriching the study of ʿilm al-bayān and the stylistics of classical Arabic literature.

Abstract

Authoritarian oppression often silences freedom, yet simultaneously triggers resistance tactics from the oppressed. This dynamic is depicted in Alaa Al-Aswany’s novel Jumhuriyyatu Ka’anna, set during the 2011 Egyptian Revolution. This descriptive qualitative research aims to analyze the forms of open and closed resistance, along with their underlying factors, using a sociology of literature approach and James C. Scott's theory. Results indicate that open resistance manifests through demonstrations, labor strikes, verbal confrontations, visual campaigns, institutional disobedience, and physical resistance. Meanwhile, closed resistance is executed covertly through false compliance, sabotage, evasion, safe space creation, disguise, and withdrawal from the system. These resistances are driven by extreme human rights violations, formal justice system failures, and economic exploitation. The scientific contribution of this study lies in recontextualizing Scott's theory from traditional agrarian societies to a modern urban landscape, revealing novel resistance tactics through the use of visual technology and religious attributes. In conclusion, authoritarian hegemony is never absolute, as the subordinate class consistently finds ways to nurture resistance.

Abstract

The open-door economic policy (Infitah) during the presidency of Anwar Sadat (1970–1981) triggered a socio-economic crisis with wide-ranging impacts on Egyptian society; however, the representation and critique of this inequality within literary works still requires comprehensive study. This research aims to analyze the social representation of Egyptian society during the Infitah era in the novel Yawmu Qutila al-Za'im by Naguib Mahfouz. Using a qualitative descriptive method with René Wellek and Austin Warren's sociology of literature approach, this study analyzes textual data in the form of quotations, dialogues, and descriptions of events from the digital edition published by the Hindawi Foundation (2022). The results show that the novel represents six interrelated social aspects: (1) economics, marked by rising prices and the burden of living costs that hindered the younger generation's marriage prospects; (2) politics, depicting the assassination of Sadat and the panic it caused throughout society; (3) education, highlighting the phenomenon of educated unemployment and declining trust in formal education; (4) religion, recording the simplification of religious practices and the shift of religious education into the family domain due to economic pressure; (5) culture, portraying the staple food foul medames as a symbol of social solidarity amid the crisis; and (6) social life, presenting intergenerational conflict between life principles and financial reality. This research contributes to reaffirming the novel's function as a critical social document of the Infitah policy while enriching the study of modern Arabic literary sociology.
