Abstract

Background: Free radicals trigger various degenerative diseases, making the exploration of natural antioxidants essential. Honey pineapple (Ananas comosus L.) peel, often considered agricultural waste, contains bioactive compounds such as phenolics and flavonoids with potential antioxidant activity. This study aims to quantify the antioxidant activity of honey pineapple peel ethanolic extract, expressed as the IC₅₀ value. Methods: Honey pineapple peel powder was macerated using 70% ethanol. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using the ABTS cation radical assay. Extract concentrations (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 µg/mL) were mixed with ABTS solution, and absorbance was measured at 747 nm using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Results: The IC₅₀ value for Vitamin C was 6.173 µg/mL, whereas the honey pineapple peel extract yielded an IC₅₀ of 61.476 µg/mL. This indicates that the antioxidant potency of the extract is 9.958 times lower than that of Vitamin C. Conclusion: The ethanolic extract of honey pineapple peel exhibits antioxidant activity with an IC₅₀ of 61.476 µg/mL. Since the inhibition percentages within the tested range did not reach 50%, this value was determined through linear regression extrapolation. Future studies should employ higher concentration ranges to confirm the inhibitory effectiveness.

Abstract

Background: Ultraviolet (UV) exposure promotes free radical formation, leading to oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, inflammation, and hyperpigmentation. Galactomannan derived from kolang-kaling (Arenga pinnata) exhibits antioxidant activity with potential protective effects against UV-induced damage. In serum formulations, carbomer and triethanolamine (TEA) are commonly combined as gelling agents to achieve desirable physicochemical properties. Objective: This study aimed to optimize a galactomannan-based facial serum by determining the most effective Carbomer–TEA concentration combination using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Methods: A formulation optimization study was conducted employing the RSM approach with Design Expert software to evaluate the interaction effects of Carbomer and TEA concentrations on serum characteristics. Results: The optimal formulation predicted by the model consisted of 0.100% (w/v) Carbomer and 1.047% (w/v) TEA. Conclusion: Response Surface Methodology successfully optimized the galactomannan facial serum formulation. The identified combination of Carbomer and TEA is expected to provide suitable serum properties while supporting the antioxidant potential of galactomannan against UV-induced oxidative damage.

Abstract

Background: Gotu kola leaves contain asiaticoside which has antioxidant properties that help skin collagen production, lighten cellulite, minimize wrinkles, and remove dark spots. Cream making requires the addition of emulsifiers or emulsifying masses, because they can affect the quality and stability of the cream product, for example triethanolamine and stearic acid. In this study, we will formulate gotu kola leaf extract in a cream preparation using stearic acid and triethanolamine emulsifiers which are expected to help stability and improve the texture of the cream to be softer. The purpose of this study was to find the optimum formula for gotu kola leaf extract cream with varying concentrations of stearic acid and triethanolamine, and to test the physical characteristics of the cream preparation. Methods: The cream making method used the emulsification method. The formula optimization method used Simplex Lattice Design with physical characteristics of pH, viscosity, adhesiveness, and spreadability. Statistical analysis used a one-sample t-test to compare experimental data with predicted data. Results: The optimum formula obtained from a combination of 3.5% TEA and 5.23% stearic acid has physical properties in accordance with the requirements of cream preparations, namely homogeneous, the cream has a milky white color, odorless, soft texture, pH 5.56, spreadability 5.8 cm, adhesive power 11.15 seconds and viscosity 11833 cps. Conclusion: In the F test, a p value> 0.05 was produced, meaning that there was no significant difference between the experimental results and the predicted results.

Abstract

Background: The increasing prevalence of acne vulgaris and the growing resistance of Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis to conventional antibiotics have encouraged the development of safer and more effective natural therapies. This study aimed to formulate and evaluate the physical stability of an acne patch containing ethanolic extract of miana leaves (Coleus scutellarioides L.) and to determine its antibacterial activity against P. acnes and S. epidermidis. Methods: Miana leaves were extracted by maceration using 96% ethanol and formulated into acne patches at concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, and 2% using hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) as the film-forming polymer. The formulations were evaluated for organoleptic properties, weight uniformity, pH, thickness, moisture content, and stability through a cycling test. Antibacterial activity was assessed in vitro using the agar diffusion method. Results: All formulations exhibited acceptable physical characteristics and remained stable throughout the cycling test. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in antibacterial activity among the formulations (p < 0.05). The inhibition zones increased proportionally with extract concentration, indicating a concentration-dependent antibacterial effect. The formulation containing 2% miana leaf extract demonstrated the highest antibacterial activity against both P. acnes and S. epidermidis and showed significantly greater inhibition than the lower concentrations (p < 0.05). Furthermore, this formulation maintained satisfactory physical stability and quality parameters. Conclusion: These findings indicate that the 2% miana leaf extract acne patch is the optimal formulation and has potential as a safe, stable, and effective natural anti-acne product.
