Abstract

Shrimp is a food ingredient that has perishable characteristics, so it requires proper handling to maintain product quality and safety. This study aims to understand the application of the quality system in frozen shrimp processing based on the principle of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) at PT Dachan Mustika Aurora Tarakan. The research was carried out during the period from July to December 2024 with a qualitative descriptive approach. The results of the study show that the frozen shrimp processing system has followed the principles and stages of HACCP in general, starting from the receipt of raw materials, temperature checks, organoleptic tests, laboratory tests, processing with temperature control, washing, sorting, packaging, to storage in cold storage. However, there are still critical points at the Metal Detector washing and inspection stages, with the potential for significant danger in the form of metal chip contamination. The quality control process is carried out in layers to ensure that the final product meets national and international standards. The implementation of HACCP has consistently proven to be effective in improving food safety, maintaining the quality of frozen shrimp, and strengthening the competitiveness of products in the export market. These findings provide recommendations for the seafood processing industry to strengthen surveillance systems at critical points and improve personnel training to minimize the risk of contamination and ensure the sustainability of product quality.

Abstract

Capture fisheries are one of the most contributing sectors in producing fishery products. The fourfinger threadfin (Eleutheronema tetradactylum) is one of the key commodities in the capture fisheries sector of Pasuruan City. The catch yield of this species is influenced by the mesh size of the gillnet used. This study aimed to determine the effect of different mesh sizes on the catch yield of fourfinger threadfin and to identify the most effective mesh size. The research was conducted using an experimental fishing method with a Randomized Block Design (RBD) comprising three gillnet mesh size treatments: 1.75 inches, 2.5 inches, and 4 inches, with nine fishing trips. Data on catch weight and number were analyzed using a One-Way ANOVA followed by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test. The ANOVA results showed an F-value of 10.083 with a significance level of 0.001 (p-value < 0.05), indicating a significant difference in the catch weight of fourfinger threadfin (Eleutheronema tetradactylum) among the mesh size treatments. This finding suggests that mesh size has a significant effect on catch weight, with the 2.5-inch mesh size being the most effective for catching fourfinger threadfin in the Madura Strait, as it produced the optimal catch weight compared to 1.75-inch and 4-inch mesh sizes.

Abstract

Capture fisheries are an important economic sector in the coastal area of Depok Beach, Yogyakarta Special Region. Fishing activities in this area use various fishing gear, one of which is the bottom gill net. However, the use of this fishing gear can have negative impacts on the aquatic environment and marine ecosystem, such as the decline in the population of white pomfret and ribbonhead fish, which are the main catch. This study aims to analyze the level of environmental friendliness of the use of bottom gill nets in Depok Beach using a descriptive quantitative approach. The methods used in this study include direct surveys of fishermen, observation of fishing operations, and analysis of catch results. Data were collected through a questionnaire containing 9 indicators compiled by the FAO, which cover aspects of gear selectivity, impact on aquatic habitats, fisherman safety, catch quality, and social acceptance of the fishing gear. The results showed that bottom gill nets had the lowest level of selectivity with a score of 1.13, indicating that this tool is less selective in selecting the types of fish caught. However, the indicator regarding consumer safety received the highest score of 4.00. Overall, the test results show that the use of bottom gill nets at Depok Beach has an environmental friendliness score of 27.06, which indicates that this fishing gear is classified as environmentally friendly even though it needs improvement in terms of selectivity.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of fishing ground differences between WPPNRI 711 and 712 on squid (Loligo spp) catches using boat-operated falling nets landed at Nusantara Fishing Port Muara Angke, Jakarta. The research employed a quantitative approach with a two-treatment experimental design, involving fishing operations in two different areas with an equal number of trips (six trips each), analyzed using an independent samples t-test. The results indicated no statistically significant difference in catches between WPPNRI 711 and 712 (p = 0.747 > 0.05). However, production data revealed variations in catch differences, with CPUE (Catch Per Unit Effort) in WPP 711 being higher than in WPP 712. These variations are likely influenced by environmental factors, oceanographic conditions, fishing pressure, and squid spawning seasons. The implications of this study highlight that differences in fishing grounds do not always produce significant statistical impacts on catches but remain crucial for sustainable squid fisheries management. Policy recommendations include regulating fishing efforts based on spawning seasons, routine stock monitoring through CPUE, and adopting advanced fishing technologies to enhance efficiency and sustainability. This research provides valuable input for fisheries management and supports sustainable utilization of squid resources at Muara Angke.

Abstract

Ekas Bay has very rich fishing potential, especially for the red snapper species (Lutjanus spp.). This study aims to determine the effect of mesh size of gill nets on catch and determine the mesh size that is more effective for catching Red Snapper (Lutjanus spp.) measures above 300 grams in the waters of Ekas Bay, East Lombok. This research was carried out in the waters of Ekas Bay, East Lombok from June to August 2025. This research method uses an experimental method that distinguishes three treatments with nine replications, using a Group Random Design (RAK). The data collection techniques in this study are observation, active participation, and interviews. Then analyzed using multiple fingerprint analysis (ANOVA). If the effect is real or very real, the effect can be seen by using the smallest real difference test (BNT), after that the BNT value is compared to the average value of the treatment. The results of the study showed that the use of different mesh sizes had a very real effect on the catch of red snapper. The 4-inch mesh proved to be the most effective with 65% of the fish caught being ≥300 grams in size, while the 3-inch mesh was 30% and the 2-inch mesh was only 5%. Thus, the use of larger mesh can increase selectivity for adult fish while reducing juvenile catches.

Abstract

Bluru Kidul Village is an area located near the northeastern coast of Sidoarjo, where its geographical position provides significant benefits for the community. Consequently, the majority of residents work as fishermen and live side by side with the marine ecosystem. Due to the existence of Bluru Kidul Village, Sidoarjo City is often referred to as a fisheries or coastal city. The fish resources in these waters are dominated by small pelagic fish, large pelagic fish, and demersal fish. One of the most widely used fishing gears is the gill net. This study applied treatments with soaking durations of 2 hours, 3 hours, and 4 hours. The objectives of this research were to identify the composition of gill net catches, analyze the effect of different soaking times on gill net catches, and determine the optimal soaking duration for catching Indian mackerel (Rastrelliger) using gill nets. Data analysis was conducted using statistical methods, including analysis of variance (ANOVA) and normality tests to ensure data suitability. To determine whether soaking duration had a significant effect, a further statistical test, namely the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test, was applied to identify which soaking time produced the best catch of Indian mackerel. The results indicated that there were significant differences in catch variables between the 4-hour treatment and the 3-hour and 2-hour treatments, whereas the difference between the 3-hour and 2-hour treatments was not significant. This finding demonstrates that the 4-hour soaking duration resulted in significantly different catch outcomes compared to the 3-hour and 2-hour durations, but no significant difference was observed between the 3-hour and 2-hour treatments.

Abstract

The growth of vannamei shrimp is an important indicator in the success of fishery cultivation, where feeding management plays a crucial role. This study aims to determine the influence of feed management on the growth rate of vannamei shrimp and measure the contribution of these variables to growth. The research method used is a quantitative approach with the use of primary and secondary data through participatory observation at the cultivation site. Data analysis was carried out using a simple linear regression test and a determination coefficient (R²) test to answer the problem formulation empirically. The results of the regression test showed that the feed management variable had a positive effect on the Y variable (shrimp growth rate), which means that the better the feed management, the higher the growth rate of vannamei shrimp. The determination coefficient test yielded an R² value of 75.3%, indicating that feeding management made a significant contribution to shrimp growth, while 24.7% was influenced by other factors not discussed in this study. These findings confirm the importance of structured and efficient feed management in increasing shrimp farming productivity. This research is expected to be a reference for fishery business actors in designing optimal feeding strategies and encouraging further research related to other variables that also affect shrimp growth holistically.

Abstract

White Feces Disease (WFD), which infects Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei), poses a serious challenge in aquaculture due to its potential to cause mass mortality and substantial economic losses. One of the main causes of this disease is bacterial infection from the genus Vibrio. The use of natural substances, such as garlic (Allium sativum) extract, is considered a more environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative for disease control. This study aimed to examine the effect and determine the optimal concentration of garlic extract in inhibiting the growth of Vibrio sp. isolated from WFD-infected L. vannamei ponds, cultured on TCBS media. The study was conducted in vitro using the disc diffusion method with four extract concentrations (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) against two bacterial isolates, designated as isolate A and isolate B. The results showed that garlic extract was able to inhibit the growth of Vibrio sp., with the largest inhibition zone observed in isolate A at 75% concentration (14.8 mm) and in isolate B at 100% concentration (19.3 mm). These findings indicate the potential of garlic as a natural antibacterial agent to inhibit pathogenic bacteria and support the sustainability of shrimp aquaculture.
