Abstract

A film poster is a visual communication medium that not only functions as a promotional tool, but also as a sign system capable of constructing meaning, shaping perceptions, and directing audience expectations towards the film's content. This study aims to analyze the meaning contained in the Abadi Nan Jaya film poster using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory which includes representation, objects, interpretants, and the classification of signs in the form of icons, indexes, and symbols. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with a semiotic analysis method. The primary data is the official Abadi Nan Jaya film poster which is analyzed based on visual elements such as color, typography, character expressions, image composition, and cultural background. The results show that the poster is effective in constructing a representation of the post-plague world through the dominance of dark colors, zombie visuals, and the characters' expressions of fear. In addition to presenting a horror film image, the poster also contains a deeper meaning about the misuse of traditional knowledge, human ambition for immortality, and the collapse of the social order due to the exploitation of culture and scientific knowledge. The use of a village background and traditional herbs strengthens the local Indonesian identity, thus distinguishing this film from zombie films in general. Thus, the Abadi Nan Jaya poster not only functions as a promotional medium, but also as a cultural communication medium that conveys social criticism through a visual sign system. The findings of this study are expected to enrich semiotic studies in the field of visual communication and Indonesian film.

Abstract

Energy resilience, defined as the ability of a region to meet its energy needs independently and sustainably, has become a strategic issue, particularly in remote areas that are not yet optimally served by conventional electricity networks. Sedalit Village in North Kalimantan represents one of the regions with significant potential for the development of renewable energy to strengthen local energy independence and resilience. With an estimated 147 buildings and a population of approximately 400 people, the village hosts several essential public facilities, including three schools, two places of worship, three community halls, three government offices, one sports facility, two health posts (posyandu), and several other supporting infrastructures. A 52.8 kWp Solar Power Plant (PLTS) in Sedalit serves as a strategic solution for providing reliable, efficient, and environmentally friendly electricity supply. This study employs a quantitative method with an experimental approach to evaluate the performance of the off-grid solar power system in the area. The results show that the grounding system operates effectively, achieving the lowest resistance values ranging from 0.63 to 0.83 ohms. The inverter output remains stable at 219–220 V with a frequency of 50 Hz. Meanwhile, the DC input voltage varies between 456–502 V with a current of 0.60–0.84 A, indicating a slight decrease in performance across several solar module strings. Overall, the PLTS system in Sedalit demonstrates good operational performance and effectively supports sustainable energy supply.

Abstract

Problems arise when the electrical energy generated by solar panels is not constant throughout the day due to changes in the sun’s position. One way to address this is to adjust the panel’s angle—either manually or automatically—in accordance with the sun’s movement. The objectives of this study are to analyze the electrical charging system of a plant sprayer equipped with a 100-watt solar panel, to determine the optimal angle for the solar panel to generate electrical energy, and to measure the voltage, current, and power produced by the solar panel during the battery charging process. The analysis method was used to determine the effect of variations in the solar panel angle on the voltage, current, and electrical power generated. The study aimed to identify the optimal angle for generating electrical energy to charge the pump system and to assess the performance of the solar-powered crop sprayer at various panel tilt angles during charging, based on field test results. Research Findings: Optimal Charging System: The battery charging system for the crop sprayer achieves optimal performance when a 100-watt solar panel is installed at a tilt angle of 20^∘. At this angle, the solar panel produces the highest average current (3.873 A) and the highest charging power (72.409 W) compared to a 10^∘ tilt or a 0^∘ flat position. Power Increase Characteristics: Changes in the tilt angle were found to affect the charging power linearly and in the same direction. Every 1° increase in tilt angle (up to the test limit of 20°) will increase the battery charging output of the sprayer by a constant 1.036 watts. The difference in power efficiency only becomes statistically significant when the angle is changed directly from the horizontal position (0°) to the optimal angle (20°). Conclusions from this study: Charging Time Conditions: The charging duration is not affected by changes in the solar panel tilt angle. This is due to the protection system in the sprayer’s Solar Charge Controller (SCC), which limits the maximum current threshold to ensure battery safety, thereby keeping the charging time constant.

Abstract

This study investigates how meaning and ideology are constructed and contested in a media poster featuring Dr. Media Wahyudi Askar in relation to Indonesia’s Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG). Employing a qualitative visual discourse analysis, the study integrates Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework and Jacques Derrida’s deconstructive approach to examine how visual political communication shapes public understanding of policy issues. The findings reveal that the poster constructs authority, credibility, and policy legitimacy through interconnected visual and textual signs that operate at the levels of denotation, connotation, and myth. At the same time, a deconstructive reading demonstrates that these meanings are neither fixed nor self-evident but remain dependent on unstable oppositions, exclusions, and alternative interpretations. The study concludes that visual political communication actively participates in the production and negotiation of ideological meanings rather than merely reflecting social reality. By combining semiotics and deconstruction, this research contributes a more comprehensive framework for analyzing contemporary visual discourse and offers insight into how authority, legitimacy, and public knowledge are constructed and challenged in digital media.

Abstract

The Lion King has been widely analyzed through narrative, moral, and semiotic perspectives; however, most previous studies examine either the film's plot structure or its symbolic elements separately. Limited attention has been given to the relationship between narrative progression and symbolic representation in constructing ideological meanings. Therefore, this study aims to investigate how Disney's The Lion King (1994) portrays leadership, responsibility, and social order through the integration of narrative and semiotic dimensions. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, this study uses Tzvetan Todorov's narrative theory and Roland Barthes' semiotic framework as complementary analytical tools. The data consist of selected scenes, dialogues, visual symbols, and narrative events obtained from the film. Data were collected through repeated viewing, documentation, and scene classification based on Todorov's five narrative stages, followed by semiotic interpretation at the denotative, connotative, and mythological levels. The findings reveal that the transition from disequilibrium to restoration is not merely a narrative process but also a symbolic journey that redefines legitimate leadership. Key symbols, including Pride Rock, the Circle of Life, and the environmental transformation of the Pride Lands, function as visual representations of authority, accountability, and communal harmony. The study further demonstrates that leadership in the film is constructed as an ethical responsibility achieved through self-recognition and social restoration rather than inherited privilege alone. By integrating narrative and semiotic analyses, this research offers a more comprehensive understanding of how animated films communicate ideological values and contributes a novel perspective to existing studies on The Lion King.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to apply Roland Barthes' semiotic theory to examine the meanings created in the Collagena Milk commercial. The study uses a qualitative descriptive approach, gathering information from a YouTube Collagena Milk commercial starring Song Hye Kyo. Three layers of signification denotation, connotation, and myth are the main emphasis of the investigation. The results show that the advertisement's verbal and visual components such as the celebrity endorser, product packaging, scientific drawings, and promotional messages are presented at the denotative level. Connotative connotations associated with youth, beauty, health, self-assurance, reliability, and ideal femininity are produced by these indicators. At the mythological level, the commercial promotes the idea that using collagen-based treatments may preserve beauty and that young appearance is the ideal standard of beauty. The inclusion of scientific images and celebrity endorsements enhances the sense of the efficacy and legitimacy of the product. The study comes to the conclusion that the commercial can serve as a cultural text that influences societal views of beauty, age, and femininity in addition to being a marketing tool due to the interplay of denotative, connotative, and mythological connotations. The results advance knowledge of how advertising uses verbal and visual cues to create and uphold cultural beliefs.

Abstract

Peatlands with complex physical and mechanical characteristics, such as low bearing capacity, high compressibility, and high water content, peat layers can cause problems in infrastructure planning and development. Consequently, to enable safe and sustainable infrastructure planning, a thorough study of the structure of the soil and subsurface rock layers is required. This study aims to determine the resistivity values of soil layers, rocks and soil shear strength tests in the peatlands of Nagasaribu Village and then relate them to the feasibility of infrastructure development in Nagasaribu Village. This study was carried out using the geoelectric method using the ARES-G4 v4.7 SN: 0609135 tool with a Schlumberger configuration. Furthermore, the results of the geoelectric interpretation were linked to soil mechanical test data, which include cohesion and friction angle of the peat soil. The results of the identification of soil and rock layer structures along the first, second, and third routes are dominated by Peat, Sand, Lanau Rock, Claystone, Alluvium, Sandstone, and Gravel, Shale, and Limestone. Based on the soil and rock layer structures along the first, second, and third routes, it is suitable to construct buildings according to local geological conditions. From the soil shear strength test results, soil samples from the first route fall into the very loose category, the second route into the somewhat dense category, and the third route into the very dense category. The information obtained can be used as a reference to determine the appropriate type of foundation to reduce the possibility of damage to buildings in peatland areas

Abstract

A film poster is a visual communication medium that serves to introduce a film and build audience expectations through the use of visual signs. This study aims to analyze the denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings in the poster for the film Cerita Lila using Roland Barthes's semiotic theory. The study employed a qualitative approach with semiotic analysis methods. The data consisted of one official poster for the film Cerita Lila, which was analyzed based on elements such as characters, color, lighting, composition, setting, typography, and visual expression. The results show that the poster not only represents the horror genre but also constructs a myth about women as figures trapped in trauma, suffering, and the supernatural world. The dominance of dark colors, the position of the main character, the presence of sleeping children, and the old house generate connotative meanings regarding psychological fear and family conflict. At the mythical level, the poster reproduces Indonesian beliefs regarding the association of old houses, long-haired women, and the supernatural world as symbols of the presence of unseen threats.
