International Research Journal of Business Studies (IRJBS) comprises three constructs. The word “International” refers to our mission to provide readers with relevant fields of study and to involve authors in giving their contributions on an international scale. ”Research Journal” refers to our aim to function as a medium to disseminate research findings regardless of methodological differences. ”Business Studies” refers to the boundary of the fields of studies that we serve i.e. encompassing all disciplines and paradigms related to the studies of any facet of the business. Aim The primary objective of IRJBS is to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the area of business studies by presenting the results of an empirical study, including rigorous research methods, and providing managerial implications to the readers. Scope The IRJBS welcomes manuscripts in business management, which include the areas of strategic management, marketing management, finance management, organization, human resources management, and operations management. Starting Volume 13, Number 2 (2020), IRJBS publishes high-quality articles/papers using rigorous research with questions, evidence, and conclusions that are related to corporate management studies and recent trends that are relevant to business management scholars and business practitioners. More specifically, the IRJBS seeks to publish papers that ask and help to answer important and interesting questions in managing the corporation, develop and/or test theory, replicate prior studies, explore interesting phenomena, review and synthesize existing research, and evaluate the many methodologies used in the corporate management field. We welcome manuscripts in corporations within one geographic and/or across the geographic and business spectrum which include but are not limited to corporate strategy, corporate governance, corporate organization, and human capital, corporate finance, corporate marketing, and the operations aspect of the corporation. Abstract

Positioning analysis provides a better understanding of the position based on the perception of passenger flights to service these attributes attached to each airline. This study aims to perform positioning of the domestic airline services based attributes, which characterize the airline based on the perception of consumers. Correspondence Analysis (CA) is used to determine the positioning of the six commercial airlines in Indonesia. The results of correspondence analysis showed that the airline Garuda, Lion Air, Citilink and Air Asia already has its own characteristics inherent in the minds of consumers, while the two other airlines, namely Batik Air and Sriwijaya Air has not had a special identifier.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship, mediated through reinforcement contingency, between (a) participation in budgeting, and (b) organizational commitment, of those organizations in the service industry, listed in the Indonesian Stock Exchange and also having their branch offices in Bandar Lampung. We develop a new construct of reinforcement contingency, through focus group discussion and several pilot studies, and use it in the main survey. We analyse data from 42 respondents, using SmartPLS. We find that reinforcement contingency as the mediation variable affects the relation between participation in budgeting and organizational commitment. This study suggests the “no reward and no punishment” system as the appropriate reinforcement contingency for employees, in order to enhance their commitment to their organization.

Abstract

Literature highlight the role of management accountants as business partners in managerial decision making process besides the traditional role as information providers. This study investigates the role of management accountants in Indonesia by adopting the DeLone and McLean Information System Success Model (2003). Data were collected by conducting surveys to acquire the perception of managers on the role of management accountants. Using structural equation modeling, the results show that both management accounting information quality and management accounting service quality have significant relationship with user satisfaction. Furthermore, the satisfaction of managers is positively related to net benefits received by managers. Therefore, management accountants in Indonesia may have fulfilled the role as business partners.

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to examine the impact of mobile internet adoption by cocoa farmers into their business performance. The main factors examined in this study are creativity and innovativeness. The study sample consists of 193cocoa farmers with 24% smart phone penetrationin thirteen cocoa farmer centers in southern East Java. Data were analyzed by employing Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The findings revealed that the business performance is significantly impacted by creativity and innovativeness. Creativity and innovativeness was measured by new product development, new process, and new marketing way; while business performance was measured by sales increase, profitability improvement and market share. This research has a limitation that the generalizability of the findings is limited to the geographical scope of the sample. Based on findings, as the practical implications of this study, to give a meaningful broadband to the farmers, all stake holders need to build a conducive broadband ecosystem for the farmer by providing better access to device, user friendly applications, and better broadband customer experience.

Abstract

This paper seeks to establish the relationships between three job characteristics constructs, namely work engagement, intrinsic motivation and job satisfaction in a workplace notorious for discord and conflict between workers and employers. A quantitative methodology was adopted using a cross-sectional survey. Respondents were selected from the workers at a mining company, with a final sample of 156 employees participating in the study. The Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, Intrinsic Motivation Inventory and the Minnesota Job Satisfaction Questionnaire were used to collect data. The results of the study indicate positive relationships between job satisfaction, work engagement and intrinsic motivation among the workers. Age and marital status were found to be significant contributors to workers’ job satisfaction, intrinsic motivation and work engagement. Implications of these results are that human resource interventions are required in order to deal with enhancing work engagement, intrinsic motivation and job satisfaction. Furthermore, the results indicate that intrinsic motivation and work engagement can enhance job satisfaction. The current study adds to the research pointing at job satisfaction as a promising underlying mechanism for employees’ to be internally motivated and engaged at work.

Abstract

In year 2008, regulation of Indonesian telecommunicationindustries changes due the tariff pricing war within Telecommunication operator. This regulation tie up the telecommunication operator and affect operating revenue margin.The needs of financial flexibility within telecommunication firm is increased.Capex, operating revenue and reinvestment needs to be flexible must be inline with competition and change of technology. This paper goals is measuring financial flexibility based on Capex, operating revenue and re-investment needs.Re-investment needs by Telecommunication operator can be financed with or without financial flexibility. Data from year 2007 up to 2014 is selected to accommodate before and after changes of telecommunication regulation. The regulation effect to financial flexibility of telecommunication firm is still relevantbecause telecommunication industries by nature needs larger capital to re-new the telecommunication technology. Real options method will be used to measure financial flexibility.

Abstract

This research examines the effect of board characteristics (comprising in different sized proportions: family commissioners, family directors, independent commissioners, ex-government officer commissioners, and board of commissioners size) to firm performance. Using fixedeffects data panel regression, this research investigates 293 firms listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange during 2008-2012. Firm performance is proxied by market measure (Tobin’s Q) and accounting measure (ROA). The findings of this research suggest that the proportion of family commissioners and family directors have positive impact only to Tobin’s Q value, while the proportion of independent directors can increase both Tobin’s Q and ROA. On the other hand, this research finds that the proportion of ex-government officers in the board gives no impact to firm performance. This research also finds that the board size has U-shaped non-linear relationship with firm performance as proxied by Tobin’s Q and ROA.

Abstract

Based on ”upper echelons theory”, this paper investigates the relation between top management team composition and BPD performance. For top management team characteristics, we employ age, level of education, background of education, gender, and functional background, while for measured the BPD performance we employ return on asset (ROA), return on equity (ROE), capital adequacy ratio (CAR), net interest margin (NIM), loan to deposit ratio (LDR), non-performing loan (NPL) and operation expenses to operation income (BOPO). The results show that all characteristics have positive significant influences on BPD performance.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze the entrenchment effect of controlling shareholder on tax avoidance, as well as looking at the role of family ownership, commissioner effectiveness, audit committee effectiveness and external audit quality. This research is a quantitative research using fixed effects model. Sample of this research is 70 firms with an observation period of 2010 until 2013. This study finds that the entrenchment effect of controlling shareholder has negative effect on tax avoidance. Other test results show that when a family is the controlling shareholder, entrenchment effect of controlling shareholder do not affect on tax avoidance. Board of commissioner and committee effectiveness proved to weaken the relationship between entrenchment effect of controlling shareholder and tax avoidance. However, the role of external quality audit does not prove to weaken the relationship between the entrenchment effect of controlling shareholder and tax avoidance.

Abstract

This article solely examines the effect of investor attentions on bid-ask spread. We find that investors’ attention surrogated by Internet Search Traffic (IST) contribute positively and significantly toward bid-ask spread (SPREAD). This result indicates that the incoming information directs the market within the stack circumstance and thin trading activity. Here, our samples were obtained from the manufacturing index, in the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) during the period of observation ranging from 2009 to 2011. The hypothesis testing in this research is performed by using panel data regression analysis (Fixed Effect Model). Test result reveals that the search of online information through Google is beneficially one of the efforts to reduce asymmetry information between informed investors and uninformed investors. Besides, we also note that asymmetric information not only exists between the informed and uninformed investors, but also happens to market makers and informed investors. Finally, our findings lead to a conclusion, in which the high search of information tends to help investors in making appropriate investment decisions.
