Stock indices in several ASEAN countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia fluctuated during the holiday period. This shows the volatility of stock performance in the capital market which is thought to be influenced by the holiday effect. Within the observation time or event window 5 days before and 5 days after, the Holiday effect is one of the phenomena where economic and social activities experience changes during the holiday period. The analysis method used descriptive statistical analysis, Kolmogorov Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk test normality test followed by hypothesis test using Paired Sample t-test and non-parametic Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. Indonesia (JCI), Vietnam (VNI), Thailand (SETI), Singapore (STI), Philippines (PSEi) had no difference between before and after holidays during the study year (2018–2022) and Malaysia (KLCI) had differences between before and after holidays during the study year (2018–2022). For further researchers, it is recommended to test for other efficient market anomalies in addition to calendar anomalies and Need to conduct further research by taking longer research time, in order to determine the effect of holidays on capital market performance, especially in ASEAN.

Abstract

Indian mass media propaganda on issues regarding Muslim minorities has led to non-verbal discriminatory actions. This is proven by the accusations experienced by Muslim groups which are disseminated through various platforms, both local media and social media. This propaganda certainly had a big influence on India's Hindu majority community, which had previously been at odds with the Muslim minority group in India since the time of the Delhi Sultanate. Since being led by a party that is not happy with the development of Islam, the Indian government has become a country that tends to be undemocratic. The Muslim minority really regrets this and says that Islamophobia is very much felt in India today. This kind of phenomenon certainly cannot be separated from the propaganda of local media which is directly controlled by the government as well as several other media such as Facebook, WhatsApp and others. This qualitative research will explain the impact of media propaganda and the bad sentiments that arise due to propaganda against Muslim minority groups in India. The government often uses the media as a political instrument to shape and even stigmatize minority groups. Furthermore, these broadcasts have influenced Indian netizens to continue pushing propaganda by creating racist and insensitive memes against the Muslim community. This situation shows an Islamophobic environment, as both mainstream news media and social media discriminate against the Muslim community without any actual facts on the ground. However, behind the propaganda, the role of the Indian government has not been proven to be able to minimize the problem, ironically exacerbating cases of Islamophobia in India.

Abstract

The primary purpose of this research is to find out how environmental, social, and governance issues (ESG) affect both prospector and defender corporate strategies as well as tax aggressiveness in the Consumer Non-Cyclicals and Basic Material sectors. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) will be used as a moderating variable. The researchers conducted a study on a selection of companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange that were vulnerable between 2019 and 2021. They used purposive sampling approaches and acquired a total of 74 companies as samples. This study employed a random effect model approach to analyse the structure of panel data. Companies using both Prosfector and Defender business strategies have a direct impact on their level of tax aggressiveness. Nevertheless, companies that adopt a prospector business strategy and practice corporate social responsibility (CSR) moderation may reduce their ability to engage in aggressive tax practices. Conversely, companies that follow a Defender business strategy and practice corporate social responsibility (CSR) moderation may enhance their ability to engage in aggressive tax practices. The use of aggressive tax reduction methods has a negative influence on a company's sustainability, leading to a decline in share prices. This is due to the unfavourable perception of investors, who view the company's recorded earnings as being small. The government incurs losses while engaging in aggressive tax avoidance activities, as these practices might diminish state revenues derived from the tax sector. These findings offer compelling evidence regarding the significance of information sharing, particularly in relation to corporate sustainability. This study enhances comprehension of corporate tax conduct and commercial tactics in emerging nations.
