Abstract

The phenomenon of environmental damage due to unlicensed gold mining activities harms aquatic ecosystems. Mercury (Hg) waste from the mining process has the potential to cause bioaccumulation in aquatic biota such as fish and crabs, which can lead to mercury contamination in the human body through the food chain. The bioaccumulation process can also produce toxic organic compounds that harm human health. Therefore, this research aims to determine whether mercury bioaccumulation occurs in yuyu crabs in the Janja River, Malomba Village, Dondo District, Tolitoli Regency, due to gold mining activities. The method used in the research is the calibration curve method with Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (CV-AAS) analysis at a wavelength of 253.7 nm. The results obtained from this research indicate that bioaccumulation has occurred in yuyu crabs that live in the Janja River. The highest accumulated mercury metal levels were obtained at upstream locations with an average of 5.24 ppb; the lowest was in the midstream, which is 1.53 ppb. At the downstream location, it has a mercury concentration of 4.53 ppb. So it shows that the mercury contamination in the yuyu crab samples is below the quality standard threshold, Indonesian National Standard No. 7387 of 2009, for the heavy metal mercury in other types of crabs and crustaceans is 1.0 ppm or 1000 ppb.

Abstract

Tepache is a fermented beverage from Mexico that is made from pineapple peel. It can improve the balance of good bacteria and reduce the risk of gastrointestinal disease. Pineapple peel contains vitamin C, phenolic compounds, and flavonoid compounds, which have antioxidant function. There have been many studies on making tepache from pineapple peel. However, there is limited research about organoleptic tests with several influencing factors, such as the type of sugar and fermentation time. The research aimed to determine tepache beverages' total phenolic content and antioxidant activity. Tepache beverages are made with pineapple peel, brown sugar, and water, and then fermented for 1, 3, and 5 days. Gallic acid is used as a standard to determine total phenolic content. The DPPH test was carried out to determine its antioxidant activity. The result of the total phenolic contents in tepache beverages for 1, 3, and 5 days of fermentation was 0.0278 mg GAE/g sample, 0.0307 mg GAE/g sample, and 0.0436 mg GAE/g sample—antioxidant activity expressed by IC50 value. IC50 values in tepache beverages for 1, 3, and 5 days of fermentation were 160.198 ppm, 150.639 ppm, and 142.713 ppm. Tepache beverages have low total phenolic content levels and low to medium antioxidant activity.

Abstract

The increasing dependence on fossil fuels to meet fuel needs has caused several problems, such as air pollution, greenhouse effects, unpleasant odors, and loud noises. This research aims to design an alternative fuel in the form of biodiesel by applying a heterogeneous catalyst based on palm bunch to synthesize biodiesel through transesterification. The research stages include activating the active sites of palm bunches through calcination at temperatures of 400 °C, 500 °C, and 600 °C; refining waste cooking oil; esterification; and transesterification. The active components of palm bunch ash (PBA) were characterized using XRF and alkalinity testing. XRF results indicated that PBA contains active basic compounds such as K₂O and CaO, crucial in catalytic activity. Physical-chemical property testing revealed that the synthesis achieved the highest yield of 93.744 %. The results of the physical-chemical characteristic tests produced the best density with an average of 0.888 g mL⁻¹, and the lowest viscosity with an average of 3.79 cSt at 40 °C with an iodine number of 80.116 g I₂ 100 g⁻¹, a saponification number of 170.57 mg KOH g⁻¹, and a refractive index of 1.445. The catalyst demonstrated stable performance up to three reuses with yields ranging from 80–90 %. FTIR spectra showed strong absorption bands at 1172–1165 cm⁻¹, indicating C-O-CH₃ stretching from methyl esters. GC-MS analysis showed that the biodiesel consists of various fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), with the main component being methyl oleate, which appears at a retention time of 37.096 minutes with an area of 40.31 %. So it is shown that PBA catalysts have an excellent potential for commercial applications as they can reduce dependence on fossil fuels by utilizing household waste.
