Abstract

A food vlogger's language of persuasion plays an important role in influencing viewership. It can arouse curiosity, whet appetites, and create emotional attachments with video viewers. In the midst of increasing content competition, the urgency of this study is to revisit the accuracy of word choice and easy-to-understand delivery to attract viewers. This article aims to identify persuasive forms in the YouTube videos of food vlogger MGDALENAF. The method used in this research is a qualitative method. The video transcription process uses the listening method, then the persuasive forms of MGDALENAF's speech are analyzed using the commensurate method and presented informally. The results of this study show a variety of assertive, directive, and expressive speech acts for certain purposes. Assertive speech acts are used for convincing actions. Directive speech acts are used for suggestion and invitation. Expressive speech acts are used for the act of praising. The dominance of speech used by MGDALENAF food vloggers is in the form of statement sentences and command sentences. The persuasion language used by MGDALENAF food vloggers is personal, casual, and not pushy. This casual nature then has an impact on the number of video viewers and the increasing interest of viewers to visit the culinary recommendations suggested by MGDALENAF food vloggers.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the impact of negative connotations in acronyms used by 11 Indonesian government applications. The research focuses on understanding public perception of these acronyms, especially those with vulgar and sexist connotations. The methodology includes a combination of observation and survey methods. Primary data were collected by recording acronyms from official government websites, while secondary data were obtained through a questionnaire survey with 60 respondents (38 females and 22 males). The results show that 52.4% of respondents are aware of these acronyms, and over 90% perceive them as vulgar. Moreover, more than half of the respondents find these acronyms inappropriate for public services, with 52.4% associating them with gender-specific sexual connotations. The study highlights the need for a more culturally sensitive approach in branding public services to avoid alienating the public.

Abstract

The study aims to determine the sociolinguistic competence level of the multilingual Grade 10 learners at Buhisan Night High School for the Academic Year 2024-2025. Terogo et al. (2018), stated that even though students have been shown to gain exceptional grades in English subjects, they fall short in sociolinguistic competence since it is not practiced more often in the Philippines. Thus, assessing sociolinguistic competence is important as well as addressing the low-level sociolinguistic competency of the learners through an action plan. A descriptive quantitative research method was used to determine the sociolinguistic competence level of the multilingual 48 student-respondents. The researcher adapted a TOIEC test and used a researcher-made questionnaire to assess the learners’ sociolinguistic competence. A weighted average mean was used to determine their proficiency and sociolinguistic competence level. Based on the results of the study, situational judgment got the highest rank while reading comprehension got the lowest rank in terms of the learners’ proficiency level. However, the study revealed that the respondents got a general weighted average of 15.83 which means that the respondents’ sociolinguistic competence level is under “Basic Sociolinguistic Competence” which is below the passing rate with a percentage of 58.63. The study recommends enhancing students’ sociolinguistic competence through the integration of sociolinguistic competence in language teaching through enhancement activities and exercises such as role-playing, dialogues and situational exercises, and future researchers may use the findings as a basis for future research or conduct related studies to enhance the sociolinguistic competence of Filipino multilingual learners.

Abstract

Diagnostic assessment is essential for teachers to determine the initial steps before learning begins. One useful instrument in this process is performance-based assessment, which evaluates products such as writing or other creative works. This study aims to describe the process and outcomes of diagnosing poetry products using the Perplexity.ai tool. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research analyzed 30 student poems collected as part of a diagnostic assessment of Indonesian language performance for class VIII H students at SMP Negeri 1 Salatiga. Data were gathered through initial observation and documentation of the Perplexity.ai application usage. Data analysis followed Milles and Huberman's interactive approach, encompassing data reduction, categorization, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The study found that (1) the Perplexity.ai application can be effectively utilized in learning, particularly for assessing students' poetry products. Teachers input students' poetry results into the application, specify the necessary assessment indicators, and allow the tool to evaluate the poems systematically. (2) The tool significantly aids teachers in analyzing student work, offering clear insights into key aspects. The diagnostic assessment results of students' poetry products highlighted three main evaluative aspects: rhyme, diction, and figures of speech. Overall, the Perplexity.ai application streamlines the diagnostic process and enhances the efficiency of evaluating student performance in poetry writing.

Abstract

Literal translation is often used to maintain fidelity to the source text when translating into the target language. This study focuses on the application of the concept of natural equivalence in the context of literal translation in the bilingual magazine LINGO. The main objective of this study is to explore the extent to which literal translation is used in LINGO and how natural equivalence can be achieved to improve the quality of translation. The research method involves an in-depth analysis of the original and translated texts of LINGO magazine to assess the use of literal equivalents and their impact on the naturalness of the target language. The study also aims to identify areas where natural equivalence could be better used, and to suggest strategies for overcoming the problems associated with overly literal translation. The implication of these findings is the importance of using natural equivalence in translation to improve the readability and naturalness of the text. Since 53% of translation methods employed are based on literal translation, it is expected that this study provides valuable insights into the application of the concept of natural equivalence in literal translation, and a basis for further research to improve translation practices in bilingual publications.

Abstract

The community of Gresik, particularly in Desa Wedani, has a rich lexicon related to fish pond cultivation. This study aims to: (1) describe the morphological formation process of fish farming lexicon in the local community; (2) analyze the structure and formation of phrases within the lexicon; (3) identify the cultural meanings and social aspects that influence the formation and usage of lexicon in freshwater fish farming in Desa Wedani. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection methods including observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis employs semantic and anthropolinguistic analysis to understand the relationship between language, culture and social practices of the community. The findings show that the morphological formation process involves the addition of prefixes, such as ng-, ny-, and nj-, to base words to create active verbs referring to specific activities in fish farming. Lexicon data found include ngeduk (lifting soil at the pond's edge), nyingkal (tilling the soil to improve water circulation) and ngipuk (sifting to protect fish fry). The structure and formation of phrases within the lexicon demonstrate a close link between farming activities and the local language. The cultural meanings embedded in this lexicon reveal social values such as the community's attachment to environmental conservation and local wisdom in managing natural resources. The results of this study can enrich linguistic and anthropological language studies and support efforts to preserve local language and culture.

Abstract

The urgency of implementing Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) and E-Assessment in sermon text learning lies in the need to enhance the relevance of teaching materials to the cultural and religious backgrounds of students while providing more objective and efficient assessments. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of combining CRT and E-Assessment in improving students' competencies at Pondok Pesantren Modern Islam Assalaam, particularly in sermon text learning. The study employed a qualitative approach with an embedded case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, documentation, and audio-video recordings. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify patterns in teaching and technology-based assessment practices. The results show that CRT enhances the relevance of learning materials to students’ cultural contexts, boosting confidence, participation, and intercultural understanding. Meanwhile, E-Assessment provides a more objective and efficient tool for evaluating sermon texts, particularly in terms of structure, coherence, and language use. However, the study also highlights challenges, such as limitations in assessing the performative aspects of speaking skills and the need for more inclusive material development. The study concludes that the combination of CRT and E-Assessment is effective in supporting students' competency development, although further innovations are needed in technology integration and teacher-student training.
