Abstract

This study aims to uncover the deepest meaning of language signs in Mahmoud Darwish's Hiya Fil Masāi Waḥīdatin poetry using Micheal Riffaterre's semiotic theory. This research uses a descriptive method with qualitative analysis. The source of this research data is the poerty Hiya Fil Masāi Waḥīdatin which consists of 34 lines. In interpreting signs in poetry, Riffaterre offers two concepts of reading. The first stage is through heuristic reading, then hermeneutic reading, followed by models, variants, matrices, as well as hypograms. The results of this study were found in heuristic readings of the meanings that are still ambiguous and heterogeneous. On the other hand, in hermeneutic reading, the model that is in the form of "sadness" is found in stanzas 1 and 2. These two stanzas represent the entire content of the poem, for the whole stanza reflects a man's sorrow for him (his country). Then the model was developed into variants namely sympathy and struggle. The matrix in this poem describes "the meaning of a homeland". The hypogram of Hiya Fil Masāi Waḥīdatin poetry is backed by two poetries, namely Yaumiyātu Jurḥ Filasṭīnī and Al-Waṭan ‘an Syain which have the meaning of suffering from alienation and longing so that a sense of struggle arises.

Abstract

This research focuses on the analysis of swear words in the Omar Film Series, which is then linked to the social and cultural context of Arab society at that time. The Omar Series is a film that tells the story of the life of Umar Bin Khattab, the second caliph of Islam, from his youth until his death. This film, which consists of 30 episodes, is widely watched by students in Indonesia, both to study the history of the development of Islam and to learn Arabic. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. To limit the research, researchers used Wijana and Rohmadi's theory which classifies swear words based on lingual units and their references, as well as theories regarding the function of swearing according to Andersson and Trudgill. The results show that the lingual units most often used in swear words in the film are in the form of clauses. Apart from that, the most common swearing references found in this film are curses, following the ancient Arabic culture of cursing. In addition, the most frequently found function is the abusive function, namely using swearing with the aim of insulting, degrading, or even cursing.

Abstract

In the current era of digital technology, the various digital platforms available in the form of social media mean that anyone can express as many things as they wish. Social media seems to be a personal "journal" but can be connected to the virtual world community or netizens so that netizens can also monitor the social media activities of each individual. One of the uses of social media by netizens is as a place to "talk" and respond to each other. These netizens do not know each other personally in the digital space. Uniquely, they do not hesitate to express personal experiences, then netizens respond ideally when the speaker and the interlocutor communicate directly. Cermin Lelaki's Instagram account presents a social media concept that is used as a forum for receiving men's conversations with various life problems. The story was then shared with the public and received many comments from netizens. Using the method of observing the language interactions of netizen comments on the Cermin Lelaki account, this research aims to explore netizen comments in response to venting and explore the extent to which the existence of digital public space can shape configurations or patterns of language activity from netizen comments. Language activities in netizen interactions are influenced by many underlying factors.

Abstract

The study aims to determine the sociolinguistic competence level of the multilingual Grade 10 learners at Buhisan Night High School for the Academic Year 2024-2025. Terogo et al. (2018), stated that even though students have been shown to gain exceptional grades in English subjects, they fall short in sociolinguistic competence since it is not practiced more often in the Philippines. Thus, assessing sociolinguistic competence is important as well as addressing the low-level sociolinguistic competency of the learners through an action plan. A descriptive quantitative research method was used to determine the sociolinguistic competence level of the multilingual 48 student-respondents. The researcher adapted a TOIEC test and used a researcher-made questionnaire to assess the learners’ sociolinguistic competence. A weighted average mean was used to determine their proficiency and sociolinguistic competence level. Based on the results of the study, situational judgment got the highest rank while reading comprehension got the lowest rank in terms of the learners’ proficiency level. However, the study revealed that the respondents got a general weighted average of 15.83 which means that the respondents’ sociolinguistic competence level is under “Basic Sociolinguistic Competence” which is below the passing rate with a percentage of 58.63. The study recommends enhancing students’ sociolinguistic competence through the integration of sociolinguistic competence in language teaching through enhancement activities and exercises such as role-playing, dialogues and situational exercises, and future researchers may use the findings as a basis for future research or conduct related studies to enhance the sociolinguistic competence of Filipino multilingual learners.
