Abstract

Translator is always given two options in translating literary works. Either they can pick formal orientation, or pick dynamic orientation. Both orientations have different effect for readers. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret is one best-selling novel written by J.K. Rowling. Her work in the series is known for the play of words. This paper proposes other version of translation by exposing several sentences taken from the novel.

Abstract

The phenomenon of phonological error as the common sense in pronouncing the words not only happens among beginners but also among the advanced English learners. The English learners are also active speakers who use English as their second language used such as in a formal situation. They tend to pronounce the same for words that have same spelling as other words in most parts of the words or even thewhole words but of different parts of speech. The present writers’ study tries to answer the question on how the English learners’ pronunciation is influenced by words with the same spelling. The participants of the study were Indonesian college students who learned English at the advanced level. In order to get the data, they were given word lists that contained a number of words and then asked to pronounce them. These words were suspected as common mistakes pronounced by the advanced learners. For example the word ‘determine’ is pronounced the same as the word ‘mine’, the word ‘preface’ is pronounced as ‘face’. In this study, the result reveals that the English learners tend to pronounce the words that refer to other words that contain the same orthography. Orthographically, the words and part of the words have the same spelling but they do not share the same pronunciation. Therefore, this error is commonly found among English learners even among those of the advanced level.

Abstract

This research is intended to analyze the meanings of semantic and moral values found in songs lyrics in the album by Coldplay. The result of this research is expected to be valuable research in enlarging the knowledge of semantics field especially in analysis of song. In this case the meanings and moral values found in the Coldplay’s Album songs lyrics. In this case, the researcher collects the data in following steps. Firstly, collecting the script of song lyrics taken from the internet. Secondly, assembling data from the sources. Thirdly, reading all the data sources. Lastly, classifying the lyric based on the lexical meaning and moral values and classified them according to the research focus. After analyzing the data, the lexical terms found in this song contains 6 denotations, 5 connotations, 1 ambiguity, 10 antonyms and 11 synonyms. Furthermore, there are many kinds of figurative languages found in some lyrics of the song such as simile, hyperbole, personification, symbol, metaphor, apostrophe, synecdoche, paradox and antithesis, etc. Specifically, the figurative language which found in lyrics a head full of dreams album , there are 1 metaphor, 2 similes, 2 symbol, 2 hyperboles and 1 irony. Then, the five song lyrics in a head full of dreams album by Coldplay tell us about human social life which contained about love, sadness, happiness, spirit and adventure of life.

Abstract

This research presents the responds of the hearers as the effects of directive speech acts that are given by the characters in Jack the Giant Slyer (2013) movie. The research is aimed to analyze the categories of responds resulted from the addresses when they are asked to do something by using the theory about directive speech act by Leech (1983). The result of the analysis shows that the responds of the characters that are found in some categories are in the form of action responds, verbal responds, action and verbal responds and no responds. The most type of directive speech acts that is responded by the action is commanding, and the least of it is suggesting.

Abstract

This research mainly focused on discovering the application of literary theory in literary texts. Literary theories and literary texts were the same as two sides of a coin. They could not be separated or segregated. In addition, they both also helped people or the readers understand the application of them. However, even though literary theory and literary texts were interrelated or interconnected, they both shared different concept. Literary theory referred to on this basis, a set of assumptions or principles in which they could be used to explain, criticize, and interpret particular aspects, situations, or conditions in literary texts. Whereas, literary text, to some extent, referred to a created story in which it was based on people’s experience such as novels, poems, and many others. The method used in this research was the library research or library studies in which the data were gathered through reading literatures and taking important notes. The primary and secondary data were used to analyze the study. The primary source was some of the literary theories in the literary works such as novel and short stories. The secondary source was gathered through reading journals, articles, and books. The findings of the study referred to four main theories, namely, structuralism, post-structuralism, post-modernism, and psychoanalysis. The application of structuralism theory in literary texts gave some insights which showed that although a thing had its structure that shape or form, it is still standing a single unity. It also happened to the literary works. Even though a literary work had its structure, it was still seen as a unity eventually. The application of post-structuralism theory showed that in reading a literary text, one might had different interpretation toward it. One might say A, but the other would probably say B. However, it was rather difficult to have the same interpretation as what the author of the texts really wanted to say without referring it to another related source to help people understand and be able to do certain analysis. The application of post-colonialism theory in literary text showed that the post-colonial theorist entered the literary texts or works through a specific critical lens, or a specific way of reading them. That critical lens, post-colonial theory or post-colonialism, asked the reader to analyze and explain the effects that colonization and imperialism, or the extension of power into other nations, had on people and nations. The last theory, the application of psychoanalysis theory in literary text showed that this theory was not the only theory that people could use to analyze or criticize the characters in literary works or texts. It might be possible if one wanted to use this theory to reveal what is intended by the author or what the characters’ motivations were. Key words: Literary theory, literary text.

Abstract

This article examines the challenges and opportunities for students of English Literature in Indonesia amidst forces of globalization and technological advancements in most aspects of life. Demographic transition of users and providers of the English language has brought about such challenges as observable lack of maturity in English scholarship and automation’s impact on education today. It can be argued that such challenges can be seen as opportunities by a creative rather than product-oriented curriculum. Given that studying literature is not only to train cognitive skills of interpreting texts, English Literature teaching in Indonesia should also impart values so as to inspire learners into becoming autonomous, self-fulfilled and emancipated global citizen. Opportunities are open if studying English Literature can include humanistic-contextual topics, discerning use of technology and transformative research method.

Abstract

This study investigates the general translation methods preference in memoir translations published by Warungsatekamu until April 2018 and what are the features of each translation method. This study uses translation method categories proposed by Newmark (1988). The data are twelve memoir translation texts which originally were written in English, and had been translated by Warungsatekamu’s translator into Indonesian. The result of translation methods analysis shows that there are seven translation methods applied. They are communicative translation method, free translation method, idiomatic translation method, faithful translation method, semantic translation method, word-for-word translation method and literal translation method. What influences these seven methods to be applied are the specific features of each translation methods.

Abstract

This study investigates the translation strategy on culture specific items existed in One Piece: Romance Dawn.This study has two objectives. The first objective was to find out the CSIs in One Piece: Romance Dawn. The second objective was to find out translation strategies applied in translating the CSIs.This study was considered qualitative and a primary research. The CSIs were listed from the comic and analyzed. The result was nine CSIs found in One Piece: Romance Dawn that refers to Japanese culture.Five CSIs were written in its original Japanese word, one CSI was translated into Indonesian word, while three CSIs were shown in pictures.

Abstract

This study investigated the translation techniques applied from Mobile Legend: Bang-Bang game and found the purpose of the techniques applied. This research used translation techniques theory from Molina and Albir (2002). The data were popular mobile game Mobile Legend: Bang-Bang game. The source text in English and target text in Indonesian, then analyzed the technique that was applied in heroes background that was translated into Indonesia Language. This study method was qualitative study and this study was a primary research. The result of the analysis was ten techniques are applied in the data. They are reduction, transposition, compensation, modulation, amplification, borrowing-naturalization, particularization, establish equivalent, generalization, calque. The techniques applied have purposes for translation.

Abstract

Museum MACAN is the first museum that exhibit modern art. Museum MACAN has Indonesia-English caption in their Instagram account in order to promote their collection. This study investigates translation shift occurs in Museum MACAN’s Instagram caption and the accuracy of their translation. The translation shift is used to produces accurate translation. This study uses Catford’s theory about translation shift (1964) and the accuracy based on ATA Rubric Assessment. The data were twenty five Museum MACAN’s Instagram captions. The collected data were analysed, in order to fine the translation shift and accuracy of their caption. There are three evaluators to rate the accuracy of the captions. The first evaluator is the writer of this study; the second evaluator is a student of management from Universitas Negeri Jakarta who works as freelance translator more than two years, the third evaluator is a professional translator who has been in translation field for twenty five years. The result of the translation shift analysis is there are five shifts occur in Museum MACAN’s Instagram captions. The most used shift is structure shift. It shows that the use of shift helps writer or translator adjusts word into appropriate sentence from source text to target text.
