The aim of this journal is to provide a platform for critical and constructive dialogues on social (sciences) and cultural studies. Not only being named after the most prominent cleric of Ponorogo, Kiai Ageng Muhammad Besari, the besari also derives from basyari (ar: humanist); therefore, this journal is established to interrogate and scrutinize as well as support what human means and plays roles as a social and cultural being, beyond geographical, communal, or disciplinary boundaries. Hence it provides a chance for academics, researchers, practitioners, and any scholars to publish original research articles or review articles in the social and cultural fields.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on transgender self-construction and their environment. This is based on the existence of new activity patterns that force people to adapt to the policies set by the government. One of them is waria, where self-construction and its environment have formed new habits as a result of the government's policy. the method used in this research is descriptive qualitative research. Data from interviews and observations were analyzed through three stages, namely reduction, data presentation and verification or drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that the construction built by transgender after the Covid-19 Pandemic is that transgender places himself in the position of transgender who has social anxiety and experiences a decline in the quality of religion. Meanwhile, in contrast to the construction of the environment given to transgender, waria is seen as having a positive image and having a high social and religious spirit.

Abstract

This research explains the historiographical flow of the Islamic da'wah inPonorogo from the time of Kiai Ageng Mirah until the formation of theIslamic boarding school network in Ponorogo. This research uses a literaturestudy method with a historical approach. The research resulted in theconclusion that: first, the historiographical flow of the spread of Islam in thePonorogo region is divided into four stages, the initial phase, namely the late1400s to 1500s, which was played by Kiai Ageng Mirah, one of SunanKalijogo's pupil, the 1600s phase of Islamic propagation in Ponorogo whichwas played by Kiai Donopuro, one of the descendants of Sunan Bayat, the1700 phase during the time of Kiai Ageng Muhammad Besari, a pupil of Kiai Donopuro, the 1800 phase played by Laskar Diponegoro after the end of theJava War, and the 1900 phase when Islamic boarding schools emerged. Second, continuously from the initial phase from 1500 to 1900, the da'wahmovement developed by these figures inherited the scientific style of theWalisongo tradition, characteristic of Indonesian Islam. Third, specifically, the Islamic boarding school network that was formed after 1900 in thePonorogo area are Islamic boarding schools that are still closely related to thePesantren Tegalsari and the descendants of Laskar Diponegoro bothgenealogically and ideologically. Penelitian ini menjelaskan tentang alur historiografi masuknya dakwah Islam diwilayah Ponorogo dari masa Kiai Ageng Mirah sampai terbentuknya jaringanpesantren di Ponorogo. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode studi pustaka denganpendekatan historis. Penelitian menghasilkan kesimpulan bahwa: pertama, alurhistoriografi penyebaran Islam di wilayah ponorogo terbagi menjadi empat tahapan,fase awal yakni tahun tahun 1400 akhir sampai 1500 yang diperankan oleh KiaiAgeng Mirah salah seorang murid dari Sunan Kalijogo, fase tahun 1600 dakwahIslam di Ponorogo yang diperankan oleh Kiai Donopuro salah seorang keturunandari Sunan Bayat, fase tahun 1700 pada masa Kiai Ageng Muhammad Besari muriddari Kiai Donopuro, fase tahun 1800 yang diperankan oleh Laskar Diponegoro pascaberakhirnya Perang Jawa, dan fase tahun 1900 muncul pesantren-pesantren. Kedua, secara berkesinambungan dari fase awal tahun 1500 sampai 1900 gerakan dakwahyang dikembangkan oleh tokoh-tokoh tersebut mewarisi corak keilmuan tradisiWalisongo ciri khas Islam Nusantara. Ketiga, secara spesifik jaringan pesantrenyang terbentuk setelah tahun 1900 di wilayah Ponorogo merupakan pesantren yangmasih berhubungan keturunan dengan Pesantren Tegalsari dan keturunan LaskarDiponegoro baik secara genealogis maupun ideologis

Abstract

Indonesian Islam has its own characteristics, being under the influence ofulama and kiai. The influence of these ulama on society has a big impact. Thespread of Islam in Indonesia in the 15th century was brought by Wali Songo.This research uses document research and direct reading methods fromprimary sources. In the spirit of preaching like this, the Wali Songo whospread Islam in this country are well aware that there is no use of spreadingIslam as a blessing if it turns out that the Indonesian people are experiencingdifficulties, are not harmonious, are destitute, are not living peacefully due tobeing at enmity with each other within the tribe. -ethnicity and race, so that itis not solid as a nation. In other words, Wali Songo's tolerance has its originsin the essence of the archipelago as Daru-s-Salam, especially in the substanceof the meaning of "anggelar adil palamarta" (realizing ultimate justice) toguarantee the implementation of the principles of a beneficial state. Islam Indonesia mempunya sifat tersendiri, berada di bawah pengaruh ulama dankiai. Pengaruh para Ulama ini pada masyarakat memiliki dampak yang besar.Penyebaran Islam di Indonesia pada abad 15 yang dibawa oleh Wali Songo. Dalampeneltian ini menggunakan penelitian dokumen dan metode membaca langsung darisumber primer. Dalam semangat dakwah seperti ini, para Wali Songo penyebarIslam di negeri ini sadar betul: bahwa tidak ada gunanya menyebarkan agama Islamsebagai rahmat kalau ternyata orang-orang Indonesia mengalami kesusahan, tidakrukun, melarat, tidak tenang hidup akibat bermusuhan satu-sama lain dalam sukusuku dan ras, hingga tidak solid sebagai sebuah bangsa. Dengan kata lain, toleransiWali Songo punya asal-usulnya dalam hakikat Nusantara sebagai Daru-s-Salam,khususnya pada substansi makna “anggelar adil palamarta” (mewujudkan keadilanyang utama) untuk menjamin pelaksanaan prinsip-prinsip bernegara yang maslahat.

Abstract

This research is intended to gain an in-depth understanding of the form ofpersonification language style and its shifts in translation. The data source forthis research is sentences containing personification figures of speech in thenovel Fī Sabīli al-Tāj and its Indonesian translation entitled Rembulan Merah.The technique used is the Molina Albir translation technique. The researchmethod used is a qualitative method with a content analysis approach. Theauthor found 8 data on translation techniques in the novel Fī Sabīli al-Tāj.The research results show that there are 5 techniques used in translatingpersonification, namely adaptation (2), amplification (2), reduction (2), modulation, and transposition. Two translation data were also found whichexperienced a shift in form from personification to non-personification, namely using modulation and transposition techniques. Meanwhile, theother 5 translators can translate according to the equivalent meaning andlanguage style. Penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk memperoleh pemahaman yang mendalammengenai bentuk gaya bahasa personifikasi dan pergeserannya dalam penerjemahan. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah kalimat yang mengandung majas personifikasi dalam novel Fī Sabīli al-Tāj beserta terjemah bahasa Indonesianya yang berjudul Rembulan Merah. Teknik yang digunakan adalah teknik penerjemahan Molina Albir.Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif dengan pendekatananalisis isi. Penulis menemukan 8 data teknik penerjemahan dalam novel Fī Sabīli alTāj. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 5 teknik yang digunakan dalammenerjemahkan personifikasi, yaitu adaptasi (2), amplifikasi (2), reduksi (2), modulasi, dan transposisi. Ditemukan juga 2 data penerjemahan yang mengalami pergeseran bentuk dari yang asalnya personifikasi menjadi non-personifikasi yaitumenggunakan teknik modulasi dan transposisi. Sedangkan 5 lainnya penerjemahdapat menerjemahkan sesuai padanan makna dan gaya bahasa.

Abstract

The development of media undoubtedly has impacts on life in society, including women and Javanese culture. The way media using women and  Javanese culture will unnecessarily shows true images of society compared to the real life happening in society. The study aims to explain how the images of Java women in the media, especially movies, and their comparisons to real life in Java society, with a qualitative approach through library research methods. The results of this research are some movies still showcasing how the patriarchal side of Java culture with women is characterized as a weak figure and serves as a mere kanca wingking. However, some movies have already depicted the values of women's life in Java, in that women not only supporting men but also performing equal roles like men in the public sphere. The role of women is even an extension of their household role so that they do not abandon their duties as wives by taking care of the family. It is expected that this research will give a different insight on the situation of Javanese women in the real life.   Perkembangan media tidak diragukan lagi berdampak pada kehidupan masyarakat, termasuk perempuan dan budaya Jawa. Cara media menampilkan perempuan dan budaya Jawa tidak selalu sesuai dengan kehidupan nyata yang terjadi di masyarakat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan bagaimana gambaran perempuan Jawa dalam media, khususnya film, dan perbandingannya dengan kehidupan nyata di masyarakat Jawa, dengan pendekatan kualitatif melalui metode penelitian kepustakaan. Hasil penelitian ini adalah beberapa film masih menampilkan bagaimana sisi patriarki budaya Jawa dengan perempuan dicirikan sebagai sosok yang lemah dan hanya berfungsi sebagai kanca wingking belaka. Namun, beberapa film telah menggambarkan nilai-nilai kehidupan perempuan di Jawa, di mana perempuan tidak hanya mendukung laki-laki tetapi juga memainkan peran yang sama seperti laki-laki di ruang publik. Peran perempuan bahkan merupakan perpanjangan dari peran rumah tangganya sehingga mereka tidak mengabaikan tugasnya sebagai istri dengan mengurus keluarga. Diharapkan penelitian ini akan memberikan wawasan yang berbeda tentang situasi perempuan Jawa dalam kehidupan nyata.

Abstract

This paper will discuss how traditional ecological wisdom is invaluable to indigenous peoples in Indonesia because it provides them with techniques for sustainable resource management while at the same time encouraging conservation practices that are rooted in spirituality. The analytical approach will use the concept of Sustainable Practices, thus the importance of this knowledge is not only for preserving indigenous culture but also for achieving long-term environmental sustainability on a global scale. Traditional ecological wisdom refers to the knowledge and practices passed down through generations by indigenous communities. These practices are deeply rooted in a sustainable approach to living in harmony with nature. This understanding guides their sustainable practices, such as rotational farming and fishing techniques that allow for natural regeneration. Throughout history, indigenous communities have developed a deep understanding of land management and agriculture techniques that are rooted in their connection to the natural world. This knowledge has been passed down through generations, allowing indigenous peoples to sustainably cultivate the land and ensure its productivity for future generations.

Abstract

Events experienced by the Indonesian people often place nationalism and religion on opposite sides. This was marked by the strengthening politicization of identity after the 2014 general election. Issues related to certain ethnicities, ideologies, and religions were used by some elite politicians to build a bad image of their political opponents. Starting from these problems, it is necessary to strengthen the understanding of religious nationalism to strengthen Indonesian nationality which is rooted in the nation's historical legacy in the past. One of these remains is manuscripts that have become a treasure of the Indonesian people. This research uses historical research methods including the heuristic stage by culturally approaching written sources in the form of several manuscripts left in the 19th century at Perdikan Ageng Pesantren Tegalsari of Ponorogo entitled "Sejarah Kyai Ageng Tegalsari". This research aims to find out the concept of religious nationalism in the 19th-century manuscript and what values can be learned.   Peristiwa yang dialami oleh bangsa Indonesia seringkali menempatkan nasionalisme dan agama di sisi yang berseberangan. Hal tersebut ditandai dengan menguatnya politisasi identitas pasca pemilihan umum pada 2014. Isu-isu yang berkaitan dengan etnik, ideologi dan agama tertentu digunakan oleh sebagian elite politisi guna membangun citra buruk lawan-lawan politiknya. Bertolak dari permasalahan tersebut, perlu adanya penguatan paham nasionalisme yang religius guna memperkuat kebangsaan Indonesia yang berakar dari tinggalan sejarah bangsa di masa lalu. Salah satu tinggalan tersebut adalah manuskrip atau naskah kuno yang kaya dan menjadi khazanah bangsa Indonesia. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian sejarah meliputi tahap heuristik. Pendekatan yang dipakai adalah pendekatan kultural, dengan menggunakan sumber tertulis berupa manuskrip peninggalan Pesantren Perdikan Ageng Tegalsari Ponorogo abad ke-19 yang berjudul “Sejarah Kyai Ageng Tegalsari”. Tujuan penelitian ini ialah mengetahui konsep nasionalisme-religius dalam manuskrip Pesantren Perdikan Ageng Tegalsari Ponorogo abad ke-19 dan apa nilai yang bisa dipetik.

Abstract

We are delighted to introduce and launch Besari: Journal of Social and Cultural Studies through this inaugural article. Here we briefly present the legacy left by Kiai Ageng Muhammad Besari of Pesantren Tegalsari in Ponorogo, Indonesia, and its significance and importance on current ideas and realities, especially about the development of Islam in Indonesia and Indonesian Islam. By perpetuating the name of the kiai as this journal name, we do not only expect to inherit the legacy, but also understand the value behind the name, Besari, which contains concepts of ukhuwah basyariyah, the brotherhood of humanity, Islam as a religion of salvation, and humanitarian Islam. Therefore, through this inaugural article, we are delighted to introduce Besari: Journal of Social and Cultural Studies to those feeling invited to answer the call for humanity, call for Besari.

Abstract

In pesantren, Islamic boarding schools, not only mosque is a place of worship, but also a place of learning and other activities. From physical perspective, mosque is also a representation of a pesantren, so knowing its architecture can show the relationship between pesantren and its local culture. In this regard, the author studied pesantren’s mosques in Tegalsari Ponorogo, Sewulan and Banjarsari, Madiun, which were founded around the 18th century. By using the Historical Archaeology approach, this study show that the 18th century pesantren’s mosques in Madiun and Ponorogo have components commonly found in Javanese mosque architecture. This is mainly represented in the form of tajug on its main room as well as other components, such as serambi and pawestren. In addition, although those pesantrens in Madiun and Ponorogo have close relationships, their mosques tend to have different uniqueness. This fact can be seen as an effort by each pesantren to develop a creative process, as well as to express the cultural forms of the society of its locus and tempus. Dalam lingkungan pesantren, masjid tak hanya berperan sebagai tempat ibadah, namun juga menjadi tempat pembelajaran dan aktivitas lainnya. Dari sisi fisik, masjid juga menjadi representasi sebuah pesantren, sehingga mengetahui arsitekturnya dapat menunjukkan relasi pesantren dengan budaya setempat. Dalam hal itu, penulis meneliti masjid pesantren Tegalsari Ponorogo serta masjid pesantren Sewulan dan Banjarsari, Madiun, yang didirikan sekitar abad ke-18. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan Arkeologi Kesejarahan, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa masjid pesantren di Madiun dan Ponorogo abad ke-18 memiliki komponen seperti yang biasa terdapat dalam arsitektur masjid Jawa. Hal itu terutama direpresentasikan dalam bentuk tajug pada bangunan ruang utama masjid pesantren, serta komponen-komponen lain, seperti serambi dan pawestren. Di samping itu, meski pesantren-pesantren di Madiun dan Ponorogo memiliki hubungan yang erat, masjid-masjidnya cenderung memiliki keunikan yang berbeda. Fakta tersebut dapat dilihat sebagai upaya masing-masing pesantren untuk mengembangkan proses kreatif, serta membaca dan mengekspresikan bentuk budaya masyarakat zamannya.

Abstract

This article describes cardboard puppets as an artistic innovation on local culture that adapts puppet art in a simpler form by using used cardboard as its main material. Through descriptive qualitative research, the article aims to examine the function of cardboard puppets as a creative learning medium as well as a means of preserving local culture in Kediri Regency. The results of the study show that cardboard puppets not only reintroduce puppet art to the younger generation, but also become an educational medium that involves students in creative activities. Making cardboard puppets trains motoric skills, improves imagination, instills local wisdom values through the stories told, and instills awareness of the importance of environmental preservation. The cardboard puppets is a concrete example of how traditional art can adapt to the challenges of modernity through innovation.   Artikel ini membahas wayang kardus sebagai inovasi seni budaya lokal yang mengadaptasi seni wayang dalam bentuk lebih sederhana dengan menggunakan kardus bekas sebagai bahan utamanya. Melalui penelitian kualitatif deskriptif, artikel ini mengkaji fungsi wayang kardus sebagai media pembelajaran kreatif sekaligus sarana pelestarian budaya lokal di Kabupaten Kediri. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa wayang kardus tidak hanya memperkenalkan kembali seni wayang kepada generasi muda, tetapi juga menjadi media pendidikan yang melibatkan siswa dalam aktivitas kreatif. Pembuatan wayang kardus melatih keterampilan motorik, meningkatkan imajinasi, menanamkan nilai-nilai kearifan lokal melalui cerita yang disampaikan, serta menanamkan kesadaran terhadap pentingnya pelestarian lingkungan. Wayang kardus adalah contoh konkret bagaimana seni tradisional dapat beradaptasi dengan tantangan modernitas melalui inovasi.
