Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Baking soda is an abrasive agent widely used to remove dental plaque and stains through mechanical friction on the enamel surface. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different baking soda concentrations on tooth surface roughness and microhardness to identify a formulation that is both effective and clinically safe. Methods: This study was an in vitro experimental study using a Post-Test Only Control Group Design with 36 extracted human teeth divided into control and treatment groups. The specimens were exposed to sodium bicarbonate paste at concentrations of 35%, 50%, and 70%. The paste was applied for three minutes, brushed in a circular motion eight times, and then rinsed. The procedure was repeated four times, simulating once-weekly application over four weeks. Surface roughness was measured using a Surface Roughness Tester (Starrett), while tooth microhardness was assessed using a Vickers Hardness Tester (Shimadzu F0310). Results: One-way ANOVA analysis revealed significant differences in surface roughness among groups (p<0.05), with the 70% concentration showing a significantly higher roughness compared to the control and 35% groups. Microhardness analysis also showed a statistically significant difference overall (p<0.05); however, post hoc testing revealed no significant differences among the treatment groups. Conclusion: Clinically, these findings indicate that sodium bicarbonate at concentrations of 35% and 50% does not compromise enamel integrity, as it does not increase surface roughness or reduce tooth microhardness, supporting its potential application in toothpaste formulations for safe plaque and stain removal.

Abstract

Background: Inflammation is a physiological response to tissue injury, infection, or irritation. The long-term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may cause adverse effects, prompting the search for safer natural alternatives. Tapak liman (Elephantopus scaber L.) leaves contain flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and steroids with potential anti-inflammatory properties. Objective: To evaluate the in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of E. scaber leaf tea using the red blood cell (RBC) membrane stabilization method. Methods: A laboratory experimental study with a post-test-only control group design was conducted. Anti-inflammatory activity was assessed based on the inhibition of hypotonic solution-induced erythrocyte hemolysis. Tapak liman leaf tea was prepared by steeping dried leaf powder in hot distilled water. RBC suspensions at concentrations of 0.25%, 0.5%, and 1% were used. Sodium diclofenac (0.1%) served as the positive control and distilled water as the negative control. Hemolysis was measured spectrophotometrically at 560 nm. Results: Tapak liman leaf tea inhibited erythrocyte hemolysis in a concentration-dependent manner. The highest membrane stabilization activity approached that of sodium diclofenac. All tested concentrations showed significantly greater membrane stabilization than the negative control (p<0.05). Conclusion: Elephantopus scaber leaf tea prepared as a hot-water infusion exhibits significant in vitro anti-inflammatory activity through erythrocyte membrane stabilization and has potential for further development as a natural phytotherapeutic agent.

Abstract

Background: Adolescent mental health, particularly among nursing students exposed to substantial academic and emotional demands, requires effective and theory-driven resilience interventions. Although gamified health education shows potential, its integration with established nursing theories such as Roy’s Adaptation Model (RAM) remains limited. Objective: This study evaluated the effectiveness of a RAM-based educational card game in enhancing mental resilience among late adolescent nursing students. Methods: A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design was conducted involving 118 nursing students (59 intervention; 59 control) from Politeknik Negeri Indramayu, Indonesia. The intervention group participated in a two-week educational card game program (60–90 minutes per session) designed to address RAM’s four adaptive modes: physiological, self-concept, role function, and interdependence. The control group received standard health education booklets. Resilience was assessed using the Adolescent Resilience and Adaptation Scale (ARAS). Due to non-normal data distribution, the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank and Mann–Whitney U tests were applied. Results: The intervention group demonstrated a significant increase in resilience from pretest to posttest (Z = −6.74, p < 0.001). Post-intervention resilience scores were significantly higher in the intervention group compared with the control group (U = 719, p < 0.001), with a medium-to-large effect size (r = 0.506). Conclusion: These findings indicate that a RAM-based educational card game is an effective and practically meaningful approach to strengthening resilience in late adolescent nursing students. This intervention offers a promising, theory-informed strategy for mental health promotion and supports the integration of resilience-building programs into nursing education curriculum.

Abstract

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk can be detected decades before onset, highlighting the importance of prevention beginning in young adulthood. Objective: This study aimed to identify the dominant factors associated with cardiovascular disease risk among young adults aged 19–40 years in Bandung City, Indonesia. Methods: This analytical cross-sectional study used primary data collected from 380 young adults aged 19–40 years residing in Bandung City, Indonesia, between July and September 2025. Participants were recruited using a snowball sampling technique. Data were collected using a modified version of the non-laboratory INTERHEART Risk Score (NL-IHRS). Results: Most participants had a moderate risk (56.1%). Significant associations were found between smoking, secondhand smoke exposure, BMI, and psychosocial problems (p = 0.000). Multivariate analysis identified secondhand smoke exposure as the strongest predictor (OR = 16.91; 95% CI: 8.13–44.90; p < 0.001), while low BMI and psychosocial support were protective. Conclusion: Secondhand smoke exposure was the dominant risk factor for cardiovascular disease among young adults, whereas healthy BMI and positive psychosocial support were protective factors. These findings provide evidence for strengthening early cardiovascular risk screening and targeted health promotion programs among young adults in Bandung City. Preventive interventions should prioritize reducing tobacco smoke exposure, promoting healthy body weight, encouraging regular physical activity, and enhancing psychosocial support through community-based and primary healthcare programs.

Abstract

Background: Stroke is a major cause of disability and mortality worldwide and is frequently associated with hypercatabolic conditions resulting from metabolic stress and inadequate nutritional intake. This condition accelerates body protein breakdown and may worsen clinical outcomes. Nitrogen balance assessment through Urine Urea Nitrogen (UUN) measurement is a reliable indicator of protein metabolism and the degree of catabolism in hospitalized stroke patients. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between macronutrient intake deficiency and increased catabolism measured by UUN levels in hospitalized stroke patients. Methods: An analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted among 67 stroke patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Macronutrient intake (energy, carbohydrates, protein, and fat) was assessed using a 24-hour dietary recall for three consecutive days, while UUN levels were obtained from 24-hour urine examinations. Bivariate analysis was performed using Pearson correlation tests. Results: The results showed that most patients experienced negative nitrogen balance (95.5%). Significant negative correlations were found between UUN levels and energy intake (r = –0.375; p = 0.002), carbohydrate intake (r = –0.289; p = 0.018), protein intake (r = –0.457; p < 0.001), and fat intake (r = –0.399; p < 0.001). Conclusion: Lower macronutrient intake is associated with increased protein catabolism in stroke patients. Adequate macronutrient intake is essential to maintain nitrogen balance and support recovery in stroke patients.

Abstract

Background: This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the keyword networks, trends, and density of scientific publications discussing peer counseling for adolescents. Peer counseling plays a critical role in addressing adolescent health issues. Publications concerning the role of peer groups within health behavior, health promotion, education, and health services have evolved significantly. However, a comprehensive mapping remains necessary to identify publication trends, collaboration networks, and existing research gaps. Objective: This study aimed to identify research patterns and development trends regarding peer counseling interventions for adolescent health problems, and to uncover largely unexplored areas of research published between 2015 and 2025. Methods: A descriptive and exploratory literature review utilizing a bibliometric approach was employed. Data were retrieved from the Scopus database, and VOSviewer was utilized to visualize keyword relationships, publication trends, and country-level collaborations. Results: Network analysis indicated that the keyword "adolescent" is strongly linked to key topics such as health promotion, health behavior, information processing, school environments, mental health care, and counseling, demonstrating multidimensionality across physical, psychological, social, and educational aspects. Density analysis revealed that adolescent mental health and behavior remain the primary focus. Furthermore, topics such as knowledge mentoring, community-based interventions, and school health services exhibited low density, identifying them as significant research gaps. Conclusion: While existing literature extensively covers mental health and counseling within school and health service frameworks, future research should prioritize community-based interventions, knowledge mentoring, and specialized school health services to address unexplored dimensions of adolescent peer counseling.

Abstract

Background: Indigenous Papuan communities maintain strong cultural traditions, which deeply influence daily life including practices around pregnancy and childbirth. These traditions are one factor being examined in relation to the high rate of stunting in Papua Province, which exceeds the national average. Previous research shows that low education, limited access to health, economics and culture influence the behavior of pregnant women. Objective: This study analyzes the factors related to stunting prevention among Indigenous Papuan pregnant women in Jayapura City. Methods: This research method used a quantitative analysis with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique used was non-probability sampling with a snowball method, totaling 50 pregnant women from OAP who live in the community in the Jayapura City area, Papua. Data collection used a questionnaire instrument. Bivariate analysis used chi-square. Results: The results indicate that cultural values (0.017) and family support (0.000) show a statistically significant association with stunting prevention practices. However, access to and utilization of formal health services did not demonstrate a significant association (0.638). Conclusion: This finding suggests that current health services may not be optimally aligned or effectively delivered to support stunting prevention within this community. Moving forward, a more integrative approach is needed. Engaging community and religious leaders will be essential to bridging cultural understandings with public health goals, thereby enabling healthcare systems to contribute more effectively to reducing stunting among Indigenous Papuans.
