Indonesia's growing English-Medium Instruction (EMI) policy and vibrant multilingual landscape attract international students, yet the linguistic experiences of African students remain significantly under-researched. This narrative inquiry explored how Somali students in Indonesia perceive and navigate their linguistic experiences while enrolled in EMI programs, and what narratives emerge that illuminate the broader implications of language policy and multicultural education in Indonesia. A single Somali undergraduate participant was selected, and data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews, a life story approach, and observational notes. The data were analyzed using thematic narrative analysis. Key findings revealed profound language shock and initial identity displacement, strategic translanguaging and technological mediation, the vital role of peer-mediated emotional and linguistic support, and the cultivation of resilience alongside an evolving learner identity. These insights underscore the necessity for more robust pre-arrival language support, formalized peer mentoring programs, and targeted lecturer training to bridge the gap between EMI policy and practice. This study contributes to a nuanced understanding of language policy's lived implications and offers practical recommendations for enhancing international student inclusion in diverse educational contexts.

This study aims to examine the latent structures of meaning embedded in the short story collection Kidung Penjaga Malam by Mim Yudiarto using a structural semiotic approach. The stories in this collection do not merely present horror or mystery narratives, but they also embed various symbols, myths, and local cultural elements that invite deeper interpretation. This research applies a qualitative descriptive method with a semiotic text analysis approach. The analysis focuses on the five semiotic codes originally proposed by Roland Barthes, updated through contemporary structural semiotic frameworks: hermeneutic (enigma), proairetic (action), semic (connotation), symbolic (binary opposition), and cultural (referential) codes. Data were obtained through close reading and note-taking of sign systems within the stories, which were then classified and interpreted through this theoretical lens. The results show that the narrative structures in these stories are constructed through layered and complex sign strategies. Elements such as birdsong, spiritual chants (kidung), mirrors, and character expression’s function both as atmospheric tools and as representations of the characters’ internal states. Furthermore, the characters' actions are found to be not merely narrative drivers, but also carriers of moral and spiritual values rooted in local traditions. From a cultural perspective, the stories also reflect rituals, Javanese myths, and customary norms that remain relevant in contemporary society. The conclusion of this study affirms that Kidung Penjaga Malam is a literary work that succeeds aesthetically and semiotically in constructing rich narrative layers, while also reflecting the spiritual, social, and psychological anxieties of today’s society. The symbols and codes scattered throughout the stories not only enhance the mysterious atmosphere but also open space for critical readings that connect the text to broader cultural and ideological contexts.

The focus of this study is to describe the role of Siti as a wife and mother who has to deal with multiple layers of economic, social, and psychological pressures as a result of having to take care of the household while also being the main breadwinner for her family. This study aims to discuss the representation of dual roles experienced by female characters in Eddie Cahyono's film Siti. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with narrative analysis methods to reveal the representation of economic burdens, domestic burdens, as well as identity crises and female independence experienced by the main character. The results of the study show that the film Siti strongly depicts the condition of women trapped in dual roles. The character Siti must struggle with caring for her paralyzed husband, raising her children, and working at night as a karaoke hostess to meet her family's economic needs. The film also portrays Siti's identity crisis, her emotional alienation, and her difficulty in gaining recognition for her struggles. Thus, the film Siti serves as a vivid portrayal of the reality of women living within a patriarchal system and facing structural pressures that hinder their autonomy and well-being.

This bibliometric study systematically maps the intellectual structure and evolution of language attitudes research within sociolinguistics using Scopus and Web of Science databases from 2005-2024, employing VOSviewer and Bibliometrix R-package for network analysis, citation mapping, and thematic clustering to reveal significant disciplinary transformation from early sociopsychological frameworks toward critical, intersectional perspectives emphasizing language ideologies, identity construction, and social justice. The analysis demonstrates explosive research growth after 2015, with translanguaging studies achieving exceptional academic impact, particularly Fang and Liu's (2020) research on Chinese university contexts (151 citations, FWCI 15.00), while European institutions, led by Spanish universities, dominate heritage language education research and Asian contexts generate breakthrough empirical studies on multilingual identity construction. Keyword co-occurrence analysis identifies "language ideology," "multilingualism," and "identity" as increasingly central conceptual nodes, reflecting convergence across subfields and movement beyond purely attitudinal measurement toward socio-politically embedded understanding, with the Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development emerging as the premier contemporary outlet, experiencing dramatic growth to 8 publications in 2023. However, persistent gaps exist in indigenous languages, sign languages, and non-Western scholarly perspectives, indicating database bias toward English-centric scholarship, revealing distinct research ecosystems where European institutions develop theoretical frameworks while Asian institutions generate high-impact empirical studies. Future research requires addressing geographic imbalances, incorporating underrepresented linguistic contexts, and expanding methodological approaches to achieve more inclusive understanding of language attitudes in global sociolinguistic contexts, demonstrating the field's evolution toward theoretically sophisticated, socio-politically aware scholarship.

This study aims to identify the types of paraphrases generated by the artificial intelligence tool QuillBot in Indonesian and to analyze its effectiveness in reducing plagiarism in academic writing. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method with documentation and data analysis techniques, based on Longacre’s (1995) paraphrase theory. The data were taken from 18 journal abstracts covering topics in linguistics, education, and artificial intelligence. Additionally, the abstracts were sourced from various study programs within the Faculty of Social Humanities at Universitas Bina Darma Palembang to ensure linguistic variety and enrich the analysis. All abstracts were paraphrased using QuillBot Premium and analyzed with Turnitin. The results show that from 123 sentences, QuillBot generated six of seven paraphrase types: Equivalent (74), Negative Antonym (2), Generic-to-Specific (1), Amplification (14), Specific-to-Generic (12), and Contraction (20). Furthermore, QuillBot was found effective in reducing plagiarism, with an average decrease of 28.89% based on Turnitin results. The greater the initial similarity, the higher the reduction after paraphrasing. As supporting data, the perceptions of five final-year students were gathered, and respondents stated that QuillBot helped simplify the paraphrasing process and reduce similarity scores, although manual revision was still needed to ensure accuracy and naturalness of meaning.

This study analyzes the meaning of the lyrics of the song “Pain Remains I: Dancing Like Flames” by Lorna Shore using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. The main focus of the research is to describe the denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings contained in the song lyrics. This qualitative study employs data collection techniques including documentation, audio-visual materials, and field notes. The analysis results demonstrate that the song lyrics are rich with literal meanings, symbolic expressions, and ideological narratives that are unconsciously accepted by society as truth. The findings strengthen the relevance of Barthes’ theory in deconstructing the structure of meaning in modern music lyrics, especially within the deathcore genre, and broaden the discourse on interpreting lyrics as a medium of emotional and cultural communication.

This study aims to analyze the narrative structure in Cyntha Hariadi's anthology, "Cica 96 Puisi," focusing on the poet's method of constructing narratives through elements of plot, characters, setting, theme, and message. The approach used was qualitative descriptive, using reading and note-taking techniques on 27 poems with dominant narrative elements. The analysis emphasized the relationship between story and discourse within the poetic texts. The results show that "Cica 96 Puisi" presents a complex and reflective narrative structure. The narratives in her poems form a historical mosaic that records the journey of identity, trauma, and social experiences of ethnic Chinese in Indonesia. The plot is structured chronologically and reflectively, moving between the past and the present. The setting and time depict social realities, while the message emphasizes the importance of accepting identity and historical memory as a form of resistance against discrimination. Overall, Cyntha Hariadi successfully constructs poetry as a narrative medium that represents identity, racism, and social criticism through simple yet meaningful poetic language.

This study is motivated by the importance of understanding text structure and linguistic aspects in news texts as a foundation for developing students’ critical literacy skills. The objectives of this research are (1) to describe the forms and functions of structure and linguistic aspects found in corruption news texts published on the online media Tempo.co, and (2) to utilize the research findings as recommendations for developing a news text learning module for seventh-grade Indonesian language classes. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. The analysis of news text structure refers to Musman and Mulyadi (2021), while the analysis of linguistic aspects is based on the framework proposed by Kurniawan and Kosasih (2018). The data consist of corruption news articles from the Peristiwa section of Tempo.co, focusing on text structures such as titles, place, and date of events, leads, and bodies of news; as well as linguistic aspects including the use of standard language, direct sentences, the conjunction that, mental verbs, time and place adverbials, and temporal conjunctions. The results show that the structure of the news texts on Tempo.co is complete and systematically organized, applying an inverted pyramid model that places the most essential information at the beginning. The linguistic aspects are consistently aligned with the characteristics of formal news language, demonstrating factuality, accuracy, and objectivity. Based on these findings, the researcher proposes a learning module for teaching news texts in seventh-grade Indonesian language classes. This module is expected to enhance students’ ability to understand text structures and linguistic features, as well as foster critical awareness of media discourse.
