Abstract

Poverty is a phenomenon of human suffering that is often brought up as the main theme in the works of literature. The study examines how poverty is manifested in the poem entitled Morning at the Window by T. S. Elliot. The analysis focuses on interpreting the poem’s meaning and further analyses the portrayal of poverty. The theoretical framework used to analyze the poem's meaning is the semiotics of poetry by Michael Riffaterre. The dimensions of poverty by Robert Chambers are also used to analyze the elements of poverty that constructed the main issue of the poem. The analysis focuses on the unsustainability of meaning and interpretation from heuristic and hermeneutic reading. The overall meaning is drawn to reveal how the poem portrays the issue of poverty. Besides, the concept of poverty depicted in the poem is demystified based on the dimensions of poverty by Chambers. The analysis shows that the poem illustrates its main issue by strongly depending on the objective, representing poverty’s dimensions. The identified dimensions of poverty that constructed the issue are powerlessness, isolation, vulnerability, and poverty. These dimensions are illustrated by depicting the maids’ physical and mental state caused by living in poverty.

Abstract

The image of an urban community is often reflected in several literary works as a form of expression of criticism of the situation in the urban community. The existence of the urban community has become one factor in the waning of the local Indonesian values. This research was done to depict the signs of local values and the portrayal of the urban society within the poem Melihat Api Bekerja (2015) by Aan Mansyur. This research was a literature review with the application of qualitative descriptive methods. The findings of this research were analyzed using Peirce’s semiotic theory through the trichotomy analysis of the figure of speech, imagery, and figurative language in the poem. It was found that the depiction of urban society was as busy with its world, while the locality aspect contained in it is a depiction through markers indicating that locality aspects have faded among urban communities. The depiction of the locality aspect is depicted through objects in the form of: 1) friendly attitude, 2) mutual cooperation, 3) traveling around the city by motorbike (using gasoline), and 4) friends are enemies. There was a significant relationship between the depiction of urban society and aspects of locality in poetry.

This study aims to explore on anti-Americanism portrayed in Nike Dream Crazy advertising, which features the controversial athlete Colin Kaepernick. Using a descriptive qualitative method and systemic-functional approach, Kress and van Leeuwen's (2006) grammar of visual design, which is based on Hallidayan Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), was applied to uncover the matter projected through the non-verbal elements. The verbal elements were explained with Searle's speech act. Moreover, Chiozza's formulation of anti-Americanism was applied to bring the analysis to a grand conclusion. The datum for the current study comprises the printed advertisement of Nike Dream Crazy advertising featuring Colin Kaepernick in the form of a digital picture. The finding shows that anti-Americanism in the advertisement is projected by the non-verbal modes and its interplay with the verbal mode through the three metafunctions of SFL.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify whether the use of digital storytelling can enhance students' speaking ability in learning English. The research was conducted using a descriptive quantitative method of pretest-posttest control group design for 8th grade junior high school students in Surabaya, Indonesia. A total of 40 students who were divided equally into the control group and the experimental group participated in this study. Students who were included in the experimental group were given treatment by learning English using digital storytelling, while students in the control group were not given this treatment. Based on the results of statistical analysis of the pretest and posttest scores conducted on the two groups of students, it shows that there is a significant difference in the posttest results of the two groups. The average score of the group of students who were not given treatment only increased by 17.02% while the group of students who received treatment increased by 26.79%. The results of the independent samples t test using the Mann-Whitney method at a significance level of 95% (? = 0.05) also showed that the t value was 109.500 < t table 127.000 and the p-value was 0.009 < 0.05. This means that there is a significant difference in posttest results between the group that was given the treatment of digital storytelling and the group that was not given the treatment, so it can be concluded that the use of digital storytelling can enhance students' speaking ability in learning English.

The relationship between digital literacy competence and academic performance on self-directed learning readiness was analyzed with a chi-square test. The research variables were measured using an ordinal scale based on the attitudes and statements answered by the students. The data were analyzed using correlation test statistics to test the proposed hypothesis. The analysis of self-directed learning readiness scores showed that 79,2% of students had high levels and 20,8% of students had low levels. Chi-square test results to assess the relationship between digital literacy competence and self-directed learning readiness obtained a p-value of 0.198, and the relationship between academic performance and self-directed learning readiness showed a p-value of 0.493. Abstract

In patriarchal societies, women are typically considered inferiors, leading to feminist movements. There are many different schools of feminism, including liberal, Marxist and socialist, existentialist, radical, and so forth. This research focuses on existentialist feminism as it is presented in Elizabeth Acevedo's With the Fire on High (2019). This research looks at how Emoni Santiago's character portrays the domestication of women and how Emoni Santiago embraces her circumstances and being a woman in the novel. Existentialist feminism, advocated by Simone de Beauvoir is used to examine Emoni's portrayal as a genuine woman who can exist. Feminist theory is used in this descriptive qualitative research study. Due to her ability to do household and public activities, the outcome demonstrates that Emoni exemplifies existentialist feminism. She succeeds in overcoming her dependence on and subordination to men regarding her economic state, personal decisions, and marriage. All possible manifestations of Emoni Santiago's existence are referred to as the transcendence of women in modern society. Emoni can eliminate labels for women like second sex and the Other by attaining a level of transcendence. Existentialist feminism can be fully realized by women being able to do a variety of tasks or positions in the private and public spheres because they are aware of what it means to be present as a woman in society. Next, having a strong desire to do or create something can be used by women to justify their existence in a patriarchal society.

Abstract

Interest may appear from curiosity about a subject, skill, or anything else. It implies that the motivation to study and act has come from interest. Interest has two types which are personal interests and situational interests. Personal interest refers to a person's generally consistent and enduring disposition, personality feature, or quality toward something. While the psychological state of being interested in a task or activity at a specific time is known as situational interest. This study focuses on the personal interests in the cooking of Emoni Santiago, a female character in With the Fire on High. She becomes motivated to learn about the culinary field and take Culinary Arts programs as her education to improve her skills in cooking. This study analysis used five aspects of interest promoted by Schunk et al. This study's findings are Emoni Santiago's personal interest which can be approved from her general attitude toward the activity, her specific conscious use for or living, her enjoyment of the activity, personal importance of the significance of the activity to the individual, and participation to the activity. The personal interest is used to determine that Emoni Santiago is motivated for learning about Culinary Arts since the program allows her to stay in touch with her interest in cooking. Furthermore, the Culinary Arts program can teach her something new, such as the fact that culinary is more than just preparing cuisine; it encompasses the art of everything related to culinary terms.
