Abstract

Figurative language is the language style used by people to communicate. In other words, the figurative language used words to imply another meaning. The benefit of figurative language in this study for the reader was to understand that the theory could be used to provide a clearer and better understanding of the figurative language meaning. This study was conducted to analyze the use of figurative language in the slogan advertisement of Maybelline New York. This study focused on observing the words that contained figurative language using Reaske’s theory (1996). The theory consists of simile, metaphor, metonymy, alliteration, and hyperbole. The method of this study was descriptive qualitative because it described the utterance of the slogans that were categorized into figurative language. At the same time, the data source was taken from the video advertisements of Maybelline New York, which were published on August 2, 2017, to August 30, 2017 on their Official YouTube channel. The result found that the slogan made things more imaginatively appealing. Creative use of figurative language in the advertisement can produce emotionally alive, intellectually appealing, and memorable messages. It is the way of some companies make figurative words as the characteristic for their products or even to describe the company itself in a vision or mission. Buyers will remember this figure of speech as a reference to them that the product supports an individual's movement or goal.

Abstract

Hidden Figures clearly show how the injustice committed by white people against black people as a society with majority status treat black people in Virginia, United States.  This study aimed to represent Black Scientist characters and the intersectionality of racialized, gendered, and classed identity in reconceptualization of Black Feminism by Patricia Hill Collins. As can be seen in Hidden Figures, Theodore Melfi’s illustrated the lives of the Black Scientists to prove that they could achieve success. The research in Hidden Figures points out that Black scientists experienced sexism, racism, and classism as intersecting oppression. The state of being subjected to tyranny. The experience of facing gender, race, and socioeconomic discrimination in everyday life. Black Scientist women respond to prejudice by succeeding in their jobs via hard effort, exploiting the system and working against it, disregarding the prejudice, concentrating on their good fortune, and urging others to join the struggle. It becomes clear that the Black Scientist characters also have the qualities and thoughts of Black Feminists, which lead to conflicting behaviours. Finally, the characters' re-imagining of Black Feminist leads to the establishment of Black Scientist orientation and empowerment, which results in the characters' lives.

Abstract

This paper focuses on how female objectification, rape culture, and patriarchy are portrayed and represented in Jay Asher's 13 Reasons Why (2007). This paper addresses the following questions: 1) How do male characters objectify Hannah Baker, the female major character in the novel? 2) How do 13 Reasons Why reflect rape culture in American society? 3) How do female objectification and rape culture in the novel represent patriarchy? Therefore, the objectives of this paper are in line with the problems, describing how male characters in the story objectify Hannah Baker, identifying how 13 Reasons Why reflects rape culture in American society, and arguing how female objectification and rape culture in the story represent patriarchy. To do so, theories of female objectification and rape culture are employed. In addition, since this is a descriptive qualitative study, the main instrument is the writers themselves, who read and scrutinize the text in the light of the theories. After exploration, it is found that male characters in the novel objectify Hannah Baker in several cases. There are also evidence of rape culture in American society as represented in the story. To conclude, the writer finds patriarchy as the root of female objectification and rape culture, a vicious circle.

Abstract

Listening comprehension is essential in the learning process, especially for EFL students. However, the students still tend to have problems in listening comprehension that hinder their learning performance. Additionally, the students in the recent semester are studying from home with different situations and equipment than in the listening class. This research aimed to identify the higher education EFL students' listening comprehension problems and the factor causing them. This research used the qualitative approach. It was found that the students had four major issues in learning to listen. The primary concern is unfamiliar words that the students encountered which slowed the students to think about the meaning of those words and missed the next part of the speech. They are also troubled with their memory because they may easily forget about the word they just listened to in the long-spoken text. The other problem is related to the rate of delivery, where the students are hard to keep up with the speaker if it is too fast. A variety of accents also troubled the students to understand the spoken text because they are not used to another accent than American. The main reason the students have these problems is that their lack of practice outside the listening class makes them lack vocabulary, anxiety, and nervousness while doing the listening task. It makes it hard to think and lose focus—lastly, poor-quality recording and noisy surroundings disturb their listening concentration.

Abstract

This study focuses on Charles Fourier's feminism and Maslow's self-actualization. The writers concentrate on Maslow's self-actualization theory's self-esteem prerequisite and five personality traits in this study. This study is qualitative research, and it employs descriptive-analytic methods. This study examines Jane Eyre's utterances and actions to uncover her personality traits in the novel Jane Eyre, to analyze Jane Eyre's inner feminist thinking. It is worth emphasizing that this research uses feminism as the theoretical background to explain the personality characteristics of Jane Eyre's inherent self-actualization. A conclusion was reached at the end of the discussion. Jane Eyre satisfies the need for self-esteem, has a self-esteem personality, and expresses the five self-actualization personality traits. Five of them are perceiving reality, accepting the self and others, being problem-centrist, independent, resisting, and criticizing the existing social culture. This research serves as a reference for studying feminist thought and is limited to looking at its thoughts through inner personality traits, suitable for providing references for people who want to know how to achieve self-actualization in society.
