Abstract

This study addresses the human dimension in Islam, which seeks to promote harmony and cooperation among people by encouraging mutual respect and working together for the common good. The significance of this topic lies in Islam’s emphasis on fostering good conduct, preserving the rights of neighbours, and promoting social solidarity, recognising that the concept of neighbourhood extends beyond simple proximity. The study highlights the importance of neighbourly rights as outlined in the Qur'an and Sunnah, illustrating how respecting these rights contributes to achieving social peace. It also discusses the consequences of neglecting these rights, including social fragmentation, weakened faith, and social unrest. The study employs an analytical approach to understand the texts and their implications, focusing on Quranic verses, Prophetic traditions, and relevant Islamic sources concerning neighbourly rights. It also draws on the methodology of Hadith scholars to assess the authenticity of the narrations when necessary, acknowledging that some narrations may be weak but do not reach the level of fabricated Hadiths, as the study focuses on values rather than legal rulings. The study concludes that safeguarding neighbourly rights, as stipulated in the Qur'an and Sunnah, is an essential part of Islamic ethics, whether for Muslims or non-Muslims. It stresses that neglecting these rights leads to social discord and weakens community ties. The study also highlights Islam's vital role in encouraging ethical behaviour, cooperation, and coexistence among individuals and nations. The conclusion reiterates that reform must begin with self-improvement, followed by family, and then extend to the broader community—an individual who is both good and reformative is better than one who is simply good.

Abstract

Infant mortality remains a significant public health concern in Nigeria, with cultural practices playing a crucial role in child survival. This study examined parents’ cultural practices and infant mortality in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria. The study used a descriptive, cross-sectional survey research design. A sample size of 400 respondents was selected from the total population of 442,100 using the Tare Yamane formula. Questionnaires were distributed to 400 randomly selected participants across all the wards in Mangu LGA. Interviews were also conducted with six key informants to complement the data gathered from the questionnaires Responses from the questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentages. Qualitative data were analyzed while outlining the key point presented by the key informant. The study revealed that cultural practices, such as reliance on traditional herbs, beliefs in supernatural causes, and generational curses, significantly contribute to infant mortality in Mangu LGA by discouraging timely medical interventions. The study concludes that deep-rooted trust, affordability, and community influence sustain these practices, making it difficult for parents to fully embrace modern healthcare. The study recommended that enhancing healthcare access, educating communities on infant health, and collaborating with traditional leaders can bridge the gap between cultural practices and modern medical care, promoting timely and effective interventions.

Abstract

Poverty today has become one of the biggest global challenges facing mankind. Global poverty statistics shows that the percentage of people living in extreme poverty has not declined especially in Third World countries. In Nigeria, recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics have shown that over 40%, which represents 82.9 million people lived below poverty line. Taraba state presently occupies 2nd position in poverty level among the 36 states of the federation with poverty prevalence put at 87.72%. Tricycle operations, otherwise known as Keke-NAPEP as an interventionist scheme, was introduced in 2012 to reduce incidence of poverty in the state, though initially tailored towards addressing rising insecurity but eventually metamorphosed into reduction in unemployment and poverty in the process. As it stands today, well over 13,000 registered tricycles are providing intra-city commercial operations in Jalingo metropolis. This study aims at interrogating the relationship between tricycle business operation and poverty alleviation in Taraba state. Has tricycle business operation caused a reduction in poverty among operators? What are the challenges faced by tricycle operators? The study adopted the Marxian Political Economy approach as a theoretical model. The study discovers that there’s a significant improvement in income generation by tricycle operators which consequently reduces poverty among them. Therefore, the study recommends that government should get directly involved in tricycle business by making provisions for more tricycles for operators at subsidized rates in order to strengthen and sustain its anti-poverty measures in the state.

Abstract

The condition of individuals with mental, physical, or visual disabilities, whether temporary or permanent, is an issue that requires attention and study in order to highlight its dimensions, discuss the social status of these individuals, and their ability to act based on their legal capacity. They are an integral part of society and deserve to enjoy all the rights that others benefit from, especially as their numbers continue to rise. I have chosen Autism Spectrum Disorder as a model to better understand it. This study aims to examine the appropriate term for these individuals, its historical development, and the extent to which they can perform legal actions. I have provided an example of associations working in this field, such as the Yahya Association for Children with Autism in Tetouan, Morocco. For the preparation of this research, I relied on the historical method to study the term "disability," and the analytical and critical method to study the social behavior with this group, as well as to analyze the legal texts related to them. In this study, I emphasized the need to pay attention to the words used when talking about them, their right to full inclusion, and the necessity of granting them legal capacity.
