Abstract

By highlighting the reverence for ancestors and the dependency of man on supernatural powers for his life, development, and well-being, libation performances reinforce ties between living things and ancestors as essential elements of African traditional culture and spirituality. However, due to the Itu people's attitude toward libation performances, the language of elements of libation performances including chants, prayers, invocations, incantation, and appeasement is disappearing. Therefore, the symbolic interaction in libation performance in Itu, South-South, Nigeria was explored in this study. Every item used, gesture made, song or prayer said, every unit of space and time that by tradition stands for something other than itself were analyzed. The study used the focused group interview (FGI), non-participant observation, and the survey method to collect information from 70 informants who were selected from the five (5) clans in the Itu Local Government Area. The EUDICO Linguistic Annotator (ELAN) was used to annotate, transcribe, and document the data while it was being descriptively analyzed. The study, among other things, indicated that ancestors may be addressed verbally or non-verbally over the course of the libation performance among the Itu people of Ibibio. Water, eggs, domestic animals, gin, clay, and other things are symbols. This study, among others, offers information on drinking that might supplement already available knowledge. It also aims to highlight the significance of the social values linked with drinking among the populace.

Abstract

Tourist activities in host environments often create land use problems, such as infrastructure development, and damage to ecosystems and habitats. These disturbances can lead to the disruption of wildlife species, affecting their normal behavior, increasing mortality, and reducing reproductive success. Despite these challenges, the direct benefits of tourism development to the local community are substantial. The study found that 76.06% of locals engaged in merchandise sales, 77.66% gained employment through park development, and 52.6% participated in tourism-related activities. Additionally, the indirect benefits of tourism development to the local community include increased security, improved wildlife conservation, enhanced infrastructure development, employment opportunities, and increased wildlife knowledge, with an average significance ranging from 26% to 45%. In conclusion, tourism development and biodiversity conservation contribute significantly to development, knowledge, employment, and awareness within the local community and the country at large.

Abstract

The study explores the attitudes of Agricultural Science Teachers (AST) in Gombe State secondary schools toward the use of instructional materials. The study aims to understand the factors influencing these attitudes and the extent to which teachers utilize instructional materials in their teaching practices. The study's introduction highlights the importance of teaching in the holistic development of learners and emphasizes the role of instructional materials, skills, and attitudes in effective teaching. The research identifies a gap in understanding AST attitudes toward instructional material utilization, despite its potential benefits. The purpose of the study is to assess these attitudes and objectives include determining teachers' attitudes toward the improvisation of instructional materials, identifying factors influencing these attitudes, and evaluating AST attitudes toward instructional material utilization. Through a descriptive survey research design, data was collected from 266 respondents (administrative staff and teachers) across 132 secondary schools in Gombe State. The study employs various statistical analyses, including t-tests and mean comparisons, to examine the research questions and hypotheses. Findings reveal that AST are concerned about time constraints and durability when it comes to improvising instructional materials. Factors influencing attitudes include policy formulation, corruption, students' attitudes, government support, and inadequate remuneration. Additionally, the study finds that AST utilize instructional materials to a slight extent in their teaching practices. The study recommends the implementation of professional development programs to enhance teachers' improvisation skills and strategies, collaborative efforts to address factors inhibiting instructional material use, and the development of a long-term strategy for sustained improvement in instructional material utilization.

Abstract

The intrusive impact of social media has revolutionised communication globally, thereby altering the status quo in virtually every aspect of life in the society. This is manifestly seen in the influence social media exerts on indigenous cultures in most especially developing countries like Nigeria. Jukun culture which is a rich traditional culture from Taraba State, Nigeria is not spared from this unfortunate reality. This study therefore, ascertains the implications of social media usage on Jukun culture from a multidisplinary point of view. Specifically, the study unravels the socio-cultural perspectives of social media usage on Aku-uka’s transitional rites; examines the perceptions of Jukun stakeholders on the implications of social media usage on Jukun traditional rites and proffers possible ways of integrating social media for promotion and transmission of Jukun culture. Anchored on cultural imperialism theory, the study adopts indepth interview to elicit relevant data from Jukun stakeholders on the implications of social media usage on Jukun culture. Among other things, the study found out that the use of social media breaches some aspects of Jukun culture and that certain foreign practices are also being introduced. The study recommends that indigenous pages and accounts should be created on different social media handles for the preservation and propagation of culture in its original form. Conclusively, social media usage has a double-edged impact on Jukun culture with the negative impact competing side-by-side with the positive impact.

The population for study is 200 respondents sampled randomly across the rural, semi-urban and urban areas of the state with focus on students of secondary schools, parents and teachers. Data collection was by questionnaire. A Value Emphasis Questionnaire (VEQ) was formulated and structured to find out the causes of students deviant behaviour, the prevalent antisocial conducts, as well as the perceptions of parents and teachers on value re-orientation in the school system. The questionnaire was structured using four-likert scale of VHE, HE, LE and VLE of points graded for 4, 3, 2 and 1 respectively. Data were collected and analyzed using Mean Rating Statistics at 2.5 value benchmark. From the results, it was deduced that moral values are poorly emphasized in the present day school system, that deviant behaviours are high among the school children of nowadays; and that parents and teachers advocate for inclusive and value-emphasized education in the state. Abstract

The background of this research is the lack of student motivation in learning. This can be seen from students' inactive involvement, lack of enthusiasm in lessons, and low critical thinking skills. This research aims to implement project based learning using a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) approach in training students' critical thinking skills. The research informants are Jambi University FKIP Education administration students who contract teaching and learning courses. A qualitative approach with case study design is used in this research to explore real world problems, and Focus Group Discussions (FGD) and several literature studies are used as collection techniques. data. The research results show STEM as a growing trend in the world of education, used to overcome real-world situations through a design-based problem solving process. Project-based learning allows students to apply what they learn to real-world problems and challenges, which helps them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. With the STEM approach in project-based learning, students can learn scientific methods, engineering design, and computational thinking while working on projects that require them to apply concepts to gain a deeper understanding. It can be concluded that project-based learning can increase student involvement and motivation by making learning more relevant and meaningful.
