Abstract

This study aimed to determine the optimal concentration of yellow turmeric (Curcuma longa) extract incorporated into smart packaging capable of detecting quality deterioration of Vannamei shrimp through indicator label color changes in response to variations in pH and Total Volatile Base (TVB) values, as well as providing timely information regarding the freshness of the packaged fresh Vannamei shrimp. The study was designed using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with an experimental method consisting of four treatments, namely the addition of yellow turmeric extract at concentrations of 0%, 1%, 2%, and 3%, with ten replications. The treatments were subsequently applied in the packaging of Vannamei shrimp stored for 6 days at a temperature of 10°C. Observation parameters included the characteristics of color changes of the indicator label during storage and their relationship with the organoleptic characteristics of shrimp freshness, including appearance, odor, and texture, as well as measurements of pH and TVB values during storage. Organoleptic test data were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis test, and when significant differences were observed, a multiple comparison test was conducted. Data on color changes, pH, and TVB values were analyzed descriptively. The results demonstrated that the use of smart packaging for Vannamei shrimp with indicator labels incorporated with yellow turmeric extract and stored for 6 days showed that the addition of 2% yellow turmeric extract was the best treatment. The 2% turmeric extract effectively detected quality deterioration of Vannamei shrimp based on clear gradations of indicator label color changes during storage and in terms of timeliness with respect to shrimp quality deterioration. The indicator label color changed from bright yellow to yellowish-brown along with the decline in shrimp freshness, accompanied by increases in pH and TVB values during storage at 10°C.

Abstract

Fish are important biological indicators used to determine the health of an ecosystem. Fish community structure is dynamic and influenced by various environmental pressures. Changes in fish community structure in river ecosystems, such as in the waters of the Brantas River, East Java, can reflect the ecological conditions of these waters. The objective of this study was to evaluate the fish community structure in the middle section of the Brantas River based on ecological indices, including relative abundance, diversity, evenness, and species dominance. The research method was conducted through surveys of local fishermen's catches at six observation stations in the middle section of the Brantas River, covering the Tulungagung to Kediri area, from July to September 2024. The ecological index values showed moderate diversity (H' 1.16–1.80), relatively high evenness (E 0.83–0.95), and low to moderate dominance (C 0.18–0.33). Based on the results of this study, it shows that the fish community in the middle section of the Brantas River is still in the moderate diversity category with good distribution, but there are indications of dominant species in certain locations and the presence of introduced species that require attention in monitoring and sustainable management.

Abstract

Water is a vital resource for coastal communities, which often have limited access to clean water. This study aimed to analyze and compare the quality of rainwater and borehole water as drinking water sources in Sayolo 3, Tanjung Village, South Sorong Regency. This study employed a quantitative descriptive approach. Water samples were collected directly from the sources and analyzed in a laboratory for 12 physical and inorganic chemical parameters. The results were compared with the quality standards stipulated in the Indonesian Minister of Health Regulation Number 2 of 2023. The findings indicate that rainwater meets all tested parameters, including pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), turbidity, iron (Fe), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), nitrate, and hardness. In contrast, the borehole water contains iron (Fe) at a concentration of 0.309 mg/L, exceeding the maximum permissible limit of 0.2 mg/L, although its other parameters remain within the safe limits. It was concluded that rainwater is more suitable for direct use as a drinking water source in the study area, whereas borehole water requires additional treatment, specifically to reduce iron content, to ensure its safety for consumption.

Abstract

Abstract

Tilapia is a type of demersal fish that is often cultivated because it is very tolerant to environmental changes and grows quickly. Feed quality is very important for tilapia cultivation. The utilization of feed ingredients can be improved by using fermentation technology. The study aims to analyze the effect of the duration of cattle rumen fermentation on corn cob meal as a feed raw material on the performance of tilapia. This study was conducted in June – July 2025 at the Fish Production and Reproduction Laboratory of the Aquaculture Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Mataram. The research method used was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), with 4 treatments and 3 replications. The treatments used in this study were control, corn cob fermentation for 5 days, corn cob fermentation for 10 days, and corn cob fermentation for 15 days. The tilapia were reared in 45-liter containers with a stocking density of 15 fish, and maintained for 45 days. The parameters used in this study were weight and length growth, survival rate, and water quality. The research results obtained showed that providing feed with different fermentations had a significant effect on the absolute length growth of tilapia, but did not have a significant effect on absolute weight and survival of tilapia.

Abstract

Zebra fish (Danio rerio) is a widely cultivated ornamental freshwater species valued for its distinctive body stripes. However, color fading during the rearing period remains a common problem for fish farmers. Ketapang leaves (Terminalia catappa) contain various bioactive compounds, including tannins, flavonoids, and saponins, which are known to improve fish health and potentially enhance pigmentation. This study aimed to determine the effect of ketapang leaf soaking water on the improvement of color quality in Zebra fish (Danio rerio). The research was conducted for 28 days using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments and three replications: A (control/100% freshwater), B (25% ketapang leaf extract), C (50%), D (75%), and E (100%). The observed parameters included survival rate, absolute length growth, absolute weight growth, color quality, and water quality (pH, DO, and temperature). Color quality was assessed using visual color grading and evaluation by 50 panelists. The results indicated that the use of ketapang leaf soaking water significantly influenced the enhancement of color quality in Zebra fish. Treatment D (75% ketapang leaf soaking water) produced the highest color brightness score, both visually and based on panelist assessments. The highest survival rate was recorded in treatment E (100%), while the highest weight growth occurred in treatment A (control). Water quality parameters, including pH, DO, and temperature, remained within optimal ranges for Zebra fish culture throughout the study
