Abstract

Microplastics (<5 mm) are increasingly recognized as pervasive pollutants in urban rivers and may induce sublethal physiological stress in freshwater fish. This study assessed the impacts of microplastic contamination on cellular/hematological blood indicators in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) from the Jagir River, Surabaya, Indonesia. Field sampling was conducted from July to August 2025 at three river segments (upstream near the sluice gate, midstream near fishing-vessel mooring and small-scale activities, and downstream approaching the estuarine outlet). Water was collected at each site for microplastic quantification, and tilapia were sampled three times at two-week intervals for blood analysis. In situ and laboratory assessments of water quality included temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and total suspended solids (TSS). Microplastics were detected at all sites, ranging from 2,365,333.3 to 2,541,333.3 particles/m³, with site-specific dominance of film/fiber upstream, fragment/film midstream, and fiber/fragment downstream. Water quality was relatively stable in temperature (27.7–28.8°C) and DO (5.5–5.9 mg/L), while BOD indicated organic loading (3.5–4.06 mg/L) and TSS showed clear spatial differences (8–17 mg/L). Blood profiles varied across sites: erythrocytes, hemoglobin, and hematocrit were lowest at the midstream site, whereas leukocyte counts were highest downstream, suggesting spatially heterogeneous stress and immune activation. One-way ANOVA indicated significant differences in microplastic abundance among sites (p < 0.05), and Pearson correlation results showed very strong associations between microplastic abundance and most blood parameters, supporting the use of integrated microplastic metrics, water quality indicators, and blood biomarkers for urban river monitoring prior to discharge into the Madura Strait.

Abstract

The catch is influenced by the catch rate of fishing gear. This study aims to analyze the catch composition, catch rate, frequency of fish emergence, and factors affecting the catch of iron traps in Lake Kerinci. The study was conducted from August–October 2025 with 10 fishermen on 30 fishing trips. The total catch reached 467 fish weighing 90.743 kg, dominated by tilapia at 77.74%, followed by medic fish, freshwater lobster, and climbing perch. Tilapia had the highest occurrence frequency (100%), indicating high abundance in the lake waters. The average catch rate was 30.25 kg/trip with variations between fishermen due to differences in location and water conditions. Regression analysis showed that the operating duration, number, and dimensions of the traps did not significantly affect the catch (R² = 0.10). In general, iron traps are classified as effective, selective, and environmentally friendly, thus having the potential to support sustainable capture fisheries in Lake Kerinci.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the longline fishing gear operating techniques on the KM Bahari Nusantara 35 vessel operating in the Indonesian Fisheries Management Area (WPPNRI) 573 in the Indian Ocean. The study was conducted in January–February 2024 through participant observation and semi-structured interviews during one fishing trip. The results indicate that longline fishing gear operation consists of three main stages: setting, soaking time, and hauling. The average setting time is 3 hours, soaking time is 2–3 hours, and hauling takes the longest, 10–14 hours. The fishing gear used has 1,496 hooks with a main line length of 62,832 meters. The catch was dominated by yellowfin tuna, followed by bigeye tuna and bluefin tuna. The operating techniques applied were deemed effective and appropriate to the characteristics of the fishing area's waters. This research is expected to serve as a reference in developing efficient and sustainable longline fishing gear operating techniques.

Abstract

Lake Kerinci is one of the lakes in Jambi Province that plays an important role as a fishery resource for the communities around the lake, particularly the villages of Tanjung Tanah and Sanggaran Agung. Fishing activities in both villages are carried out daily to meet household needs and the daily economic needs of fishermen. One of the fishing tools used in Lake Kerinci is the bagan tancap, which is a fishing tool made of bamboo sticks stuck into the bottom of the lake on a permanent basis. The fixed fishing rafts are operated every day, day and night, which affects the structure of the community in Lake Kerinci. The structure of the community is related to the composition, diversity, uniformity, and dominance of fish species in the waters. This study aims to determine the structure of the community caught by fixed nets, environmental parameters, and differences in catches between Tanjung Tanah Village and Sanggaran Agung Village. This study was conducted in Lake Kerinci, Kerinci Regency, Jambi Province, from May 1 to June 4, 2025. The results obtained were H` 1.09, categorized as moderate, E 0.79, categorized as high, and E 0.40, categorized as low. It can be concluded that the community structure in Lake Kerinci is still quite stable, but sustainable management is needed to preserve the ecosystem in Lake Kerinci.

Abstract

Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) culture faces water quality challenges due to the accumulation of metabolic waste and uneaten feed. Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) can improve water quality, but commercial filter media are relatively expensive for small-scale farmers. Waste materials such as mussel shells, eggshells, and zeolite have potential as economical alternatives. Therefore, research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of waste-based filter media in maintaining water quality and fish growth. This study aimed to analyze the effect of waste filter media in RAS on water quality and tilapia growth and to determine an economical alternative for small-scale farmers. A descriptive study was conducted for 28 days in Bungah Village, Gresik, using three filter media treatments. The treatments consisted of P1 (foam + mussel shell + bioball), P2 (foam + eggshell + bioball), and P3 (foam + zeolite + bioball) with a stocking density of 14 fish per aquarium. Observed parameters included pH, growth (WG, SGR), and FCR. Results showed that all treatments-maintained pH within the optimal range with minimal fluctuation. Treatments P1 and P3 produced higher growth compared to the others. FCR values in all treatments indicated good and relatively similar feed efficiency. Mussel shell and zeolite media provided more consistent biological performance. Eggshell media also maintained water quality although growth was slightly lower. Overall, waste-based filter media performed comparably to commercial filters. Waste filter media in RAS effectively maintained water quality and supported tilapia growth. Utilization of waste materials has potential as an economical alternative for small-scale farmers.

Abstract

The research was conducted from August to September 2025. Samples were made on 20–31 August 2025, while the testing process was conducted on 1 September 2025 at the Laboratory of the Department of Fisheries Resources Utilization, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, IPB University. This research aims to analyze the breaking strength of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) fiber nets, to analyze and compare them with synthetic nylon nets and nets made from other natural fibers, and to analyze the potential of water hyacinth as an alternative raw material for net production. The nets tested consisted of 2, 4, and 6 fibers of water hyacinth with diameters of 3 mm, 4 mm, and 5 mm. The research used three treatments with ten replications, in accordance with SNI ISO 1805:2010. The observed parameter was breaking strength. The results show that nets made of six fibers of water hyacinth have the highest breaking strength, reaching 8,04 kgf, while nets made of four fibers of water hyacinth have the highest breaking strength per diameter and the best efficiency, at 1,66 kgf/mm.

Abstract

Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) is one of the primary freshwater aquaculture commodities that plays a strategic role in supporting national fish production and contributing to the livelihoods and economic development of local communities. The high intensity of aquaculture practices, combined with the movement of live fish across regions, increases the risk of fish disease transmission, particularly highly contagious viral diseases. One of the most significant viral diseases of concern is Koi Herpes Virus (KHV), which can cause high mortality rates and substantial impacts on production, economic stability, and fish trade activities. This study aimed to detect the presence of Koi Herpes Virus (KHV) and to determine its prevalence in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) commodities transported through the Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Center of North Sulawesi using the Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) method. The research employed a descriptive design with a surveillance approach. The study samples consisted of five common carp collected from quarantine traffic activities. Detection of KHV was conducted through DNA extraction followed by amplification of the viral target gene using the qPCR method. The prevalence rate was calculated based on the proportion of positive samples relative to the total number of examined samples. The results showed that out of five examined common carp samples, one sample tested positive for Koi Herpes Virus (KHV), while the remaining four samples were negative. Based on these findings, the prevalence rate of KHV in common carp transported through the Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Center of North Sulawesi was 20%. These findings indicate that although the majority of transported fish were KHV-negative, the potential introduction and spread of the virus through fish movement remains present. In conclusion, the Real-Time PCR (qPCR) method is effective as an early detection tool for Koi Herpes Virus (KHV) due to its high sensitivity and specificity. The detection of KHV in a portion of transported common carp emphasizes the importance of strengthening fish quarantine surveillance and consistently implementing laboratory examinations as preventive measures against the spread of fish diseases to other regions, in accordance with the national fish quarantine system.

Abstract

Supply management is a critical component in hand line fishing vessel operations lasting 10–20 days at sea, as it directly affects operational cost efficiency and catch quality. This study aimed to identify and analyze the supply management system of hand line vessels at Bungus Oceanic Fishing Port, covering procurement, storage, maintenance, and control stages, as well as identifying the main constraints faced by fishers. A descriptive method with a qualitative approach was employed through observation and purposive interviews involving captains, crew members, vessel owners, port officers, and logistics suppliers from October to December 2023. The results indicate that the supply management system has been relatively well-structured; procurement is based on estimated trip duration and crew size with an average cost of IDR 25–30 million per trip for 24–30 GT vessels, storage is organized by categorizing wet, dry, and high-demand goods, maintenance includes ice protection, freshwater monitoring, and controlled daily consumption, while control mechanisms involve daily recording, usage limitation of high-demand items, and post-trip evaluation of remaining supplies. The main challenges include limited storage space on smaller vessels and the absence of standardized supply requirements based on vessel tonnage and trip duration. Overall, the supply management system is considered adequate but remains experience-based, highlighting the need for standardized supply guidelines and a more systematic logistics recording system to improve efficiency and planning accuracy.

Abstract

As a freshwater commodity, catfish (Pangasius hypophthalmus) has a high market value, making it worthy of cultivation. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal dosage of noni fruit extract for the survival and growth of catfish fry, which is then applied to commercial feed. In aquaculture, feed plays a crucial role in determining the success of fish growth. The catfish used were 8-10 cm in size. The method used in this study was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments and three replications. Where P1 (without giving noni extract), P2 (giving noni extract 5 ml/kg feed), P3 (giving noni extract 10 ml/kg feed) and P4 (giving noni extract 15 ml/kg feed. The results of the study showed that the best survival was in P3 (86.66%), the best absolute weight growth was in P3 (4.80g), the best absolute length growth was in P2 (1.04 cm), the best daily growth rate was in P3 (1.64%) and the best feed conversion ratio was in P3 (2.10%).
