Abstract

One of the rapidly growing cultivation businesses in the Sidenreng Rappang Regency is tilapia cultivation, but in the cultivation process of tilapia commodities, problems are often found, including stunted growth, relatively long harvest times, and large amounts of feed consumption, which increase the number of losses during cultivation. In other words, tilapia is a type of commodity that has a fast fertilization process, so an alternative material is needed to determine good gonads in the growth and survival of tilapia, so the alternative material used is papaya seed extract. This study aims to determine and study the dosage of papaya seed extract used to see the level of gonad maturity, growth, and survival of female tilapia. This study will be conducted from February to May 2025, located at Jl. Ahmad Taufik, Panca Rijang District, Sidenreng Rappang Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The study used 4 treatments, namely treatment A. Commercial feed 100 gr + Papaya seed extract 0 ml / kg feed (100% feed), in treatment B. Commercial feed 100 gr + Papaya seed extract 0.1 ml / kg feed, while treatment C. Commercial feed 100 gr + Papaya seed extract 0.2 ml / kg feed, and treatment D. Commercial feed 100 gr + Papaya seed extract 0.3 ml / kg feed, with 3 repetitions. Data analysis used Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and a simple analysis was carried out in looking at primary metabolites in the liquid.

Abstract

Seaweed cultivation is a fisheries subsector with high economic value and plays an important role in improving the welfare of coastal communities. Sejoli Village, Moutong District, Parigi Moutong Regency has great potential in developing Chlorophyta seaweed, but faces obstacles such as limited capital, simple cultivation technology, and weak communication between farmers. This study aims to determine seaweed farmers' social and economic conditions in Sejoli Village. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with 25 respondents, selected based on the criteria of active farmers. Data were obtained through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation, then analyzed descriptively. The results show that socially, the majority of farmers are of productive age (21–50 years), predominantly male (92%), have basic education, and have strong social interactions through cooperation activities and farmer groups. Economically, business capital ranges from IDR 4,000,000 to IDR 20,000,000 per planting season, total production costs IDR 101,160,000, total revenue IDR 197,405,000, and net income IDR 96,245,000 per cycle.

Abstract

Blue Swimming Crab (Portunus pelagicus) is one of the economically important marine commodities produced from the waters of Pangkajene Islands. Market demand for blue swimming crabs continues to increase. According to the Pangkep Regency Marine and Fisheries Department, in 2010, crab production from fishing activities in the waters of Pangkep Regency reached 1,819.7 tons. The fishing gear used to catch blue swimming crabs is the crab gillnet. Based on the above, it is necessary to conduct fishing activities that are more profitable and responsible. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the financial aspects of the crab gillnet fishing gear in Salemo Island during March–May 2018. This research employed a survey method, with data collected through questionnaires using the random sampling method from fishermen operating crab gillnets. Based on the results, the R/C ratio > 1, with an average R/C ratio value of 1.31, meaning that for every Rp 1 invested, the return is Rp 1.31, or a margin of Rp 0.31. This indicates that the blue swimming crab gillnet fishery business in Salemo Island, Pangkep Regency, is financially feasible and has the potential to continue and develop further.

Abstract

This study evaluated the production performance of intensive whiteleg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) farming using BUSMETIK (plastic pond, 1600 m²) and BUTAMIRA (household-scale pond, 250 m²) methods at the Marine and Fisheries Polytechnic of Jembrana, Bali. Shrimp were stocked at 370 individuals/m² (BUSMETIK) and 172 individuals/m² (BUTAMIRA) and cultured for 75 days (October–December 2023). Culture management included pond preparation, blind and demand feeding strategies, aeration, water quality control, and probiotic applications. Growth and production performance were assessed through survival rate (SR), average body weight (ABW), average daily growth (ADG), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and water quality parameters. Results showed that both systems supported stable water quality and effective shrimp growth. BUSMETIK ponds demonstrated higher productivity due to greater stocking density, while BUTAMIRA provided efficient production with lower operational inputs, making it suitable for household-scale adoption. Overall, both culture methods proved feasible for small-scale intensive shrimp farming, offering promising strategies to support Indonesia’s shrimp production targets and provide opportunities for smallholder farmers.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of adding walnut protein concentrate as a natural emulsifier on the functional and physicochemical characteristics of whiteleg shrimp sausage. The parameters analyzed included moisture content, fat content, water-holding capacity (WHC), protein content, emulsion stability, and texture (hardness, cohesiveness, and springiness). The research employed a factorial randomized block design (RBD) with two factors: the concentration of walnut protein concentrate (2%, 3%, and 4%) and the concentration of tapioca starch binder (3% and 4%). The results showed that adding walnut protein concentrate and tapioca starch significantly influenced all tested parameters. The moisture content ranged from 75.05% to 76.56%, fat content from 1.27% to 1.77%, WHC from 83.42% to 93.09%, protein content from 12.41% to 12.65%, emulsion stability from 82.67% to 86.67%, and hardness from 11.42 N to 18.65 N Cohesiveness was 0.7, and springiness was 0.9. The best treatment was found in the combination of 4% walnut protein concentrate and 3%–4% tapioca binder, depending on the parameter measured. The 4% concentrate and 4% binder combination yielded the highest moisture, fat content, and WHC, while the 4% concentrate and 3% binder combination produced the best emulsion stability and protein content. These findings suggest that walnut protein concentrate has strong potential as an effective plant-based emulsifier in shrimp-based sausage products.

Abstract

Sand lobster (Panulirus homarus) is one of the high-value fishery commodities. The capture of peurulus generally uses passive fishing gear known as “pocong.” The use of underwater light as an aid in capture has the potential to increase effectiveness in attracting peurulus. This study aims to analyze the spontaneous phototactic response of peurulus to variations in underwater light color. Phototactic response is manifested as the position of the zone at the end of the light exposure period. The zone is divided into five sections, with the underwater LED light placed in the fifth zone. The study was conducted at the Aquaculture Laboratory of Hang Tuah University, using a completely randomized design (CRD) with three treatments of underwater LED light colors: white, red, and purple, each with a power of 3 watts, and each treatment was repeated 20 times. The independent variable was light color, and the dependent variable was the phototaxis response measured based on the zoning of the larvae's position at the end of light exposure. The results of the Mann-Whitney test showed a significant difference between white and purple light (p<0.05), while there was no significant difference between white-red and red-purple light. Peurulus showed the highest positive phototaxis response trend under white light (average zone 2.8), followed by red (average zone 2.7) and the lowest under purple (zone 2.1). This response is thought to be influenced by differences in wavelength and light intensity produced by each color. Underwater light color affects the phototaxis response of sand lobster larvae, white light being more effective at attracting attention compared to red and purple.

Abstract

One of the widely cultivated aquaculture commodities is catfish (Clarias sp), making it one of the prioritized species for aquaculture development. The development efforts can incorporate IoT technology to control water quality in the culture tanks. Therefore, the aim of this study was to observe the growth performance of catfish (Clarias sp) using an IoT-based water quality control system.This study was conducted for 9 weeks and consisted of two stages. The first stage involved setting up the IoT device system using temperature and TDS sensors, which were then installed in the culture container. The next stage was monitoring growth and water quality. Based on the monitoring results, the average temperature in the culture tank was 27.56 °C and the TDS level was 230 ppm during IoT-based monitoring, with the device accuracy reaching 90%. Growth performance showed an increase in body length of 1.5–2.5 cm per week, with a survival rate of 80%.

Abstract

Indonesia is a significant hub for the global ornamental fish sector, contributing approximately 400 out of 1,100 internationally traded freshwater ornamental fish species, including the highly popular Manfish (Pterophyllum scalare). Due to its graceful movement and distinct flat body shape, the manfish is a key commodity. This omnivorous species exhibits a carnivorous tendency, prioritizing a high-protein diet for optimal growth. While Manfish sized 4-5 cm can consume commercial feed, they show a preference for natural feeds like brine shrimp (Artemia salina), tubifex worms (Tubifex sp.), and water fleas (Daphnia sp.) due to their high nutritional content and motion, which stimulates appetite. Maintaining an optimal diet, specifically 30-45% protein and 6-10% fat during the juvenile stage, is crucial for successful cultivation and is primarily provided through these natural feeds. Length is often considered a more stable indicator of skeletal growth than weight in ornamental fish studies. This research aims to determine the effect of different types of natural feed on the absolute length growth of Manfish (Pterophyllum scalare) measuring 4-5 cm in experimental tanks and to identify the best natural feed type for maximizing this growth. The study will be conducted using an experimental method with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of three treatments and nine replications each: Treatment A (Tubifex sp.), Treatment B (Artemia salina), and Treatment C (Daphnia sp.). The study will use 81 Manfish (4-5 cm, mean weight 3,05 g/fish) with a stocking density of 1 fish/L.

Abstract

Pangasius cultivation is an important aquaculture sector in Indonesia. However, intensification programs are often accompanied by increased vulnerability to disease. One disease that frequently occurs in pangasius cultivation is the systemic bacterial disease Motile Edwardsiella Septicemia (MES), also known as Edwardsiellosis. This disease is caused by infection with the bacterium Edwardsiella tarda and causes mortality of 5-7 cm pangasius fry ranging from 80-95% for 2-8 weeks. Treating fish diseases using chemicals can trigger new problems, such as antibiotic residues, bacterial resistance, and environmental pollution. A widely developed strategy utilizes herbal ingredients as immunostimulants and antibacterial agents, one of which is extract of ketapang (Terminalia catappa) leaves. This study aims to determine the effect of the dose of ketapang leaf extract on the survival rate of 5-7 cm pangasius fry infected with Edwardsiella tarda bacteria. This study used an experimental method with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of 5 treatments and 5 replications. This study used different doses of ketapang leaf extract. Treatment A; Ketapang leaf extract dose of 100 mg/L, Treatment B; Ketapang leaf extract dose of 200 mg/L, Treatment C; Ketapang leaf extract dose of 300 mg/L, Treatment D; Ketapang leaf extract dose of 400 mg/L, Treatment E; Ketapang leaf extract dose of 500 mg/L. The test animals used catfish seeds measuring 5-7 cm with an average weight of 3.5 g/tail. The stocking density was 3 tails/L, the experimental media used fresh water with a volume of 3 L/container. The results showed that treatment C gave the best results on the survival rate of 5-7 cm catfish seeds of 93.33%.

Abstract

Small-scale fishers in Indonesia continue to face structural poverty associated with unequal access to markets, financing, information, technology, and economic institutions. The increase in national capture fisheries production has not always been accompanied by improved fisher welfare, as economic benefits within the fisheries value chain remain unevenly distributed. This study aims to identify the structural factors underlying the disempowerment of small-scale fishers, evaluate the limitations of fishers’ economic institutions, and formulate an empowerment strategy through digital cooperatives. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using literature review and secondary data analysis. Data were obtained from documents published by Statistics Indonesia, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, and relevant scientific literature. The analysis was conducted through issue identification, secondary data synthesis, thematic triangulation, and strategy formulation. The findings show that the disempowerment of small-scale fishers is shaped by their weak bargaining position in the value chain, dependence on market intermediaries and informal financing, and the suboptimal functioning of fishers’ cooperatives. Digital cooperatives can serve as an empowerment strategy by strengthening transaction recording, institutional transparency, access to price information, marketing of fish catches, and linkages with formal financial institutions. However, their success requires digital literacy, sound cooperative governance, member trust, digital infrastructure, continuous facilitation, and consistent policy support
