Abstract

This study discusses gender relations in Javanese society through the analysis of QS. al-Nisa': 1 and 34. These verses are often referenced in shaping relationships between men and women, particularly in Javanese society, which is characterized by strong traditions and social norms. This study aims to examine how the interpretation of QS. al-Nisa' verses 1 and 34 is understood and applied within Javanese cultural concepts such as kanca wingking and sumur, dapur, kasur as well as how Qur'anic values interact with local traditions. This research employs a qualitative approach using textual analysis of Qur'anic exegesis and cultural observation methods. The findings reveal a dynamic interaction between Qur'anic interpretations and Javanese cultural values, where the exegesis of these verses is often adapted to align with the prevailing patriarchal system. Nevertheless, there are efforts to reinterpret these verses to foster more just and equitable gender relations. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the relationship between sacred texts and local cultures while offering a new perspective on examining gender relations within diverse societal contexts.

Abstract

This study explores the gender perspective within the Qur'an, emphasizing its stance on equality, roles, and responsibilities of men and women in various spheres of life. While gender discourse in Islam has often been shaped by cultural and historical interpretations, the Qur'an provides foundational texts that assert both spiritual and moral equality of the sexes. Through a thematic and analytical review of key verses, this paper investigates Qur'anic narratives concerning creation, leadership, inheritance, education, and social justice. The study critically engages with both classical and contemporary interpretations, highlighting the implications of Qur'anic gender principles in modern contexts, particularly in relation to women's rights, empowerment, and gender justice. Employing a qualitative methodology grounded in tafsir literature and feminist hermeneutics, this paper contributes to a more holistic and balanced understanding of gender in Islamic thought. The findings suggest that the Qur'an advocates for gender equity rooted in taqwa (piety), rather than biological determinism, and calls for continuous engagement with divine texts in light of evolving societal realities.

Abstract

This research will explore the nature of gender equality in the view of the Holy Qur'an, an ideal thought so that it is not misguided in understanding it, so that the realisation of community life is full of justice, harmony, peace and prosperity, especially on our beloved Indonesian earth. In Indonesia, the struggle for gender equality is extraordinary, with the emergence of several organisations related to gender equality, including the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan), the Association of Indonesian Women's Unions (HAPSARI), and the Indonesian Women's Care Movement (GPPI). Abstract

This study examines verse 233 of Surah Al-Baqarah from the Quran, which addresses the responsibilities of mothers in breastfeeding their children and the duties of fathers in providing for the nursing mothers. The verse emphasizes that mothers should breastfeed their children for two complete years if they wish to complete the nursing period. It also states that the father is responsible for providing food and clothing to the nursing mothers in a reasonable manner, according to it means. The verse further clarifies that no one should be burdened beyond their capacity and that neither the mother nor the father should be made to suffer because of their child. If both parents desire weaning by mutual consent and consultation, there is no blame upon them. Additionally, if parents wish to have their children nursed by a substitute, there is no blame upon them as long as they pay what is acceptable in a reasonable manner. The verse concludes by advising to be conscious of Allah and know that Allah is all-seeing of what you do. This study analyzes the verse from various perspectives, including its historical context, linguistic analysis, general interpretation, and application in different disciplines such as education, women's rights, and postmodernism. The findings highlight the Quran's emphasis on the rights and responsibilities of both parents, the importance of breastfeeding, and the need for mutual consultation and reasonable conduct in family matters.

Abstract

Building on the arguments put forward by Riffat Hasan and Amina Wadud, which suggested that gender-biased interpretations of the Qur'an are largely the result of male exegetes, one might assume that female interpreters would naturally produce interpretations more favorable to women. However, in reality, Zainab al-Ghazali's interpretation appeared to align more closely with male-centric views. This leads to the argument that an individual's prior knowledge and social context significantly influence their understanding of the Qur'an. This study seeks to examine Zainab al-Ghazali’s perspective on polygyny as presented in her exegesis Nazarat fi Kitab Allah. This study was a library research based on Nazarat fi Kitab Allah as the primary source, employing Karl Mannheim’s sociology of knowledge—specifically, the three kinds of meaning—to analyze Zainab al-Ghazali’s interpretation of Qur’anic verses on women's roles in the household. The analysis aims to reveal the objective, expressive, and documentary meanings within her exegesis. Applying Karl Mannheim’s theory of the three kinds of meaning, this study arrived at the following conclusions: a) Objective meaning: The interpretations of early exegetes regarding polygyny tend to follow a textual-literal approach; b) Expressive meaning: Zainab al-Ghazali did not oppose the practice of polygyny, provided the husband is capable of maintaining justice. Her interpretation was influenced by the socio-political context of Egypt at the time, her affiliation with Islamic movements, and the prominent figures who shaped her thought; c) Documentary meaning: Her interpretation aligned with a quasi-objectivist traditionalist framework, reflecting a textual orientation within classical exegesis.

Abstract

This study examines the interpretation of Qur'anic verses regarding the concept of gender equality from Nur Rofiah's perspective and its implications in the household in response to the increasing divorce rate in Jombang City in 2024. The researcher used a type of library research and a descriptive-analytical approach. This research makes the concept of gender equality as a formal object and the verses of the Qur'an as a material object. The first finding is about the verses that Nur Rofiah uses as the foundation of gender equality such as An-Nahl verse 97, Ar-Rum verse 21, Al-Hujurat verse 13, Al-Baqarah verse 30 and At-Taubah verse 71. Second, according to Nur Rofiah's interpretation that the reward for human deeds has nothing to do with gender, men and women both carry the mandate of the caliphate on earth, only piety is able to distinguish the two in the eyes of Allah, hand in hand in commanding good and forbidding evil and the need for zawaj relationships in achieving domestic purity. According to him, the concept of gender equality is part of the mission of Islam. By positioning Tawheed in Islam, it is hoped that it will be able to revolutionize the position of men and women for equality. When this concept is applied in domestic life, it will produce several points of implication that will be discussed straightforward and in-depth in this study.

Abstract

Intergender communication in Muslim societies is often influenced by social norms, patriarchal culture, and conservative religious interpretations, which can limit equality in speech, social roles, and leadership. This study focuses on how Islamic spirituality, which encompasses values such as tauhid (oneness of God), rahmah (compassion), adab (etiquette/morality), justice (keadilan), ihsan (excellence/sincerity), and sincere intention (niat ikhlas), can serve as a basis for forming a more just, empathetic, and transformative pattern of gender communication. Using the literature review method, this article collects relevant literature from classical and modern texts, as well as empirical research from Indonesian and global contexts. The narrative describes the framework of Islamic spirituality, analyzes the relationship between spirituality and gender communication, identifies challenges, and deepens the discussion on practical implications in the context of education, dakwah (Islamic preaching/outreach), media, and family. The results of the study indicate that Islamic spirituality offers the potential for the transformation of gender communication: through adab, moral equality before God, sincere intention, and sincere mutual respect between genders; however, obstacles such as patriarchal interpretations, local culture, regulatory uncertainty, and inadequate education are still very dominant. This study hopes to become a theoretical foundation for further empirical research and for communicative practices in Muslim communities that are more humane and spiritual.

Abstract

Surah Al-Baqarah verse 234 is one of the important verses that regulates ‘iddah—the waiting period for a woman whose husband has passed away, lasting four months and ten days. Normatively, this verse is often understood as an obligation for women to preserve their dignity and ensure the certainty of lineage. However, from a gender perspective, this verse carries a deeper meaning related to the position and protection of women within the Islamic social system. This study aims to analyze the meaning of justice and protection for women in the provision of ‘iddah as stated in QS. Al-Baqarah verse 234, using a thematic (maudhu‘i) and gender hermeneutic approach. The research employs a qualitative method based on a literature study and applies the TA9-based exegesis methodology (Tamhid, Tartib al-Ayat, Tarikh, Tanasub al-Ayat with other verses, Tanasub al-Ayat with Hadith, Tarjamah Mufradat, Tahlil Tafsir, Takwil al-Ayat, and Tathbiq). The findings show that the provision of ‘iddah is not a form of women’s subordination, but rather an expression of respect for their dignity and rights. From the Qur’anic perspective, this rule serves as a social and psychological transition period for women to gain inner peace, legal protection, and space to reorganize their lives after the loss of a spouse. Thus, QS. Al-Baqarah verse 234 reflects a balanced value of gender justice, where the Qur’an places women as legal subjects who have the right to make life choices after the completion of the ‘iddah period. These findings affirm that Islamic teachings, when understood contextually, support the principles of justice, well-being, and respect for women as beings equal before Allah.

Abstract

This article examines the lived experience of women in childbirth as portrayed in two Qur’anic passages—QS. al-Aḥqāf [46]:15 and QS. Maryam [19]:22–26—through a qualitative descriptive–analytical framework. Integrating textual, contextual, and hermeneutical approaches, the study investigates how the Qur’an articulates both the human dimension (al-insāniyyah) and the spiritual dimension (al-rūḥāniyyah) of the maternal experience. Surah al-Aḥqāf underscores an ethical-normative vision, portraying the mother’s suffering and sacrifice as the moral foundation of birr al-wālidayn (filial devotion). Conversely, Surah Maryam presents an existential-spiritual encounter in which Maryam’s solitude, anguish, and submission (tawakkul) reflect the depth of human faith in the face of divine will. Drawing upon the works of classical exegetes such as al-Ṭabarī, al-Qurṭubī, and Ibn Kathīr, alongside contemporary interpretations by M. Quraish Shihab, this study argues that the Qur’an transcends the biological description of childbirth and reveals its theological and existential depth. Childbirth emerges not merely as a physiological process but as a sacred intersection between the human and the Divine, where pain becomes a vessel of raḥmah (divine mercy) and maternal love embodies the compassionate presence of God within creation.
