Abstract

This study analyzed epistemic bias in the state’s narrative about Gerwani during the 1965 G30S event using the epistemology of intelligence approach. Through a qualitative philosophical method, this research evaluated the state’s processes of information acquisition, interpretation, and dissemination, focusing on the identification of political bias, gender bias, confirmation bias, framing effects, overconfidence bias, as well as the use of misinformation and disinformation. The findings revealed that the state’s narrative about Gerwani was systematically constructed to support the New Order regime’s political agenda through the manipulation of information. These biases led to dangerous epistemic failures and justified violence and the erasure of women’s historical roles. The study concluded that a Pancasila-based philosophy of intelligence, especially the epistemology of intelligence, was necessary to prevent future misuse of intelligence practices. It was recommended that state intelligence agencies prioritize truth, justice, and human rights principles to create an ethical and accountable intelligence system aligned with democratic values.

Abstract

The phenomenon of the #MeToo and #BalanceTonPorc hashtags became the focus of attention in various parts of the world in 2017. It was first popularized by Alyssa Milano on her Twitter account using the #MeToo hashtag, and later followed by Sandra Muller with #BalanceTonPorc in France. The feminist movement on social media inspired many artists and musicians, including Angèle, a singer from Belgium. She released a song and music video titled "Balance Ton Quoi" (2019), in which she expressed that the activist spirit of feminism resides within her, turning her song into a feminist anthem. The messages conveyed in her music video are often wrapped in subversive humor. This research aims to demonstrate how subversive humor in the "Balance Ton Quoi" music video can be a form of resistance against sexism. The qualitative research method by Creswell & Poth (2016) is used, focusing on the corpus of Angèle's music video "Balance Ton Quoi." The research draws upon various theories, including Barthes' semiotics (1957) from the book "Mythologies," Kramer's subversive humor (2015), and Scott's notions of public and hidden transcript (1992). Five selected scenes of subversive humor are analyzed, and the results show that the ratio of public to hidden transcript is 2:4. Public transcript is predominantly used not only for educational purposes but also to bring about broader social change, expose injustices, and build solidarity among victims and supporters to attract a larger audience. Moreover, the message must first reach the objects of sarcastic mockery in the music video, namely, adherents of patriarchal ideology, men, and sexual harassers.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the watermelon is used, interpreted, and disseminated as a symbol of resistance and a form of expression of solidarity with the Palestinian struggle on social media. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach through various literature sources. It draws upon Roland Barthes’ (1977) theory of signs and meaning to examine the symbolic use of the watermelon in this context. The findings reveal that the watermelon, whose internal colors resemble those of the Palestinian flag—green (rind) symbolizing resilience, white (inner rind) symbolizing sincerity, red (flesh) symbolizing courage, and black (seeds) symbolizing the emerging younger generation—has evolved into a powerful emblem of solidarity and resistance against Israeli oppression of the Palestinian people. The popularity of the watermelon as a symbol has grown significantly since the escalation of the Israel–Palestine conflict on October 7, 2023, up to the time this study was conducted. It has appeared in a variety of visual content formats, including emojis and TikTok filters, thereby broadening its symbolic reach and amplifying its impact on the global solidarity movement.

Abstract

Cancel culture is a social phenomenon that occurs when an individual receives public backlash due to actions or statements considered to violate social norms. This phenomenon has become increasingly prominent in South Korea, attracting attention in its highly collective and responsive digital society, which has led to its portrayal in various media works. One such work is the film Pilot (2024), which tells the story of a famous pilot's reputation falling after a gender-biased comment of his spread widely online and drew public scrutiny. This study aims to analyze the representation of cancel culture in the film Pilot (2024) using a qualitative approach with the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method developed by Jäger and Maier. The analysis reveals that the film represents cancel culture as a complex social mechanism through discourse construction reflected in language, actions, and visual elements. This representation illustrates how power dynamics, gender bias, and expectations of professionalism interact to shape social consequences for individuals deemed to have committed a transgression. The film also portrays various responses to social pressure and highlights the role of social media as a primary space for shaping public opinion in the digital era.

Abstract

Film is a form of visual art that can shape public perceptions of various aspects of life, including social and cultural issues. One of the recurring themes in film is colonialism, which often represents issues such as racism and social stratification. These themes are reflected in the film Zoete Dromen (2023), directed by Ena Sendijarević, with a runtime of 1 hour and 42 minutes. The film narrates a conflict over inheritance within a sugar plantation-owning family, in which the entire estate is left to a child born from a relationship with a concubine. The research problem addressed in this study is: how is the representation of social stratification constructed in the film Zoete Dromen (2023) by Ena Sendijarević? The aim of this study is to describe the general depiction of social stratification in Zoete Dromen (2023) by analyzing the dialogue and visual elements among the characters. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method. It is grounded in Max Weber’s concept of social stratification, particularly his definitions of social class, social honor, and power. The concept of social stratification is further supported by Stuart Hall’s theory of cultural representation through the constructionist approach. The findings of this study indicate that the film portrays power as the central element of social relations, representing indigenous identity through language, symbols, and power dynamics. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of indigenous identity within the broader framework of social stratification as depicted in the film Zoete Dromen (2023).

Abstract

In recent years, the popularity of Korean cuisine has experienced a significant increase, in parallel with the growing influence of the Korean Wave (hallyu) across various countries. Beyond this cultural phenomenon, Korean diaspora communities have also played a crucial role in promoting Korean cuisine on a global scale. This study aims to analyze the representation of Korean-American diaspora identity through a case study of culinary presentation innovations by chef Edward Lee in the reality show Culinary Class Wars. The research adopts a descriptive qualitative method. The findings indicate that Edward Lee’s diasporic identity is represented through the fusion cuisine he presents, as reflected in his choice of ingredients, presentation style, and the personal narratives that accompany his dishes. Lee embraces both cultural backgrounds and incorporates them as integral components of his identity. This representation also serves as part of the broader strategy of Korean cultural globalization, utilizing global media platforms such as Netflix to convey Korean culture to a worldwide audience through the figure of the diaspora.

Abstract

This study examines the use of fixed prepositions in Dutch by third- and fifth-semester students of the Dutch Studies Program in the academic year 2024/2025. The topic of this research is related to linguistics, specifically grammar and vocabulary. The theoretical framework used in this study is the meaning of fixed prepositions by Van den Toorn, Willy Vandeweghe, and Walter Haeseryn. et al. This research employs a descriptive method with a quantitative approach to analyze the extent of third- and fifth-semester students' ability in answering questions related to the use of fixed prepositions, classified according to their association with verbs, adjectives, and nouns. The data for this study were collected from the completion of questions about fixed prepositions by 10 third-semester students and 10 fifth-semester students from the Dutch Studies Program in the academic year 2024/2025. The results of this study show that fifth-semester students have a better command of using fixed prepositions in relation to verbs, adjectives, and nouns compared to third-semester students.
