Abstract

This article examines the image of Majapahit as a symbol of power and political construction in Indonesia in the early 20th century AD until the 1960s. Majapahit is known in the imagined of past greatness. Its image was then accepted in the context of nationalism, revolutionary ideology, and the struggle against colonialism. Over its development, the symbols and constructions of the image of Majapahit shaped its influence in the political vision of nationalists in Indonesia. Entering the era of Indonesian Independence, the debate about Majapahit had formed an elements in the national political vision. This article aims to understand the construction and transformation of Majapahit symbolism in the history of Indonesian nationalist thought. This article uses historical research methods, namely topic selection, heuristics (source collection), verification (source criticism), interpretation, and historiography. The sources used are based on published speech manuscripts, historiographical works, writings in contemporary nationalist newspapers, correspondence letters, and relevant secondary sources. This article finds that Majapahit as a symbol and construction faced its own challenges. The diversity of the spectrum of nationalism in Indonesia, particularly the element of Islamic nationalism, challenged the construction of Indonesia’s past in the Majapahit symbolism from the beginning of the 20th century AD until the 1960s. This multispectrum of Indonesian nationalism ultimately became one of the reasons why the Majapahit symbolism was unacceptable as a modern political identity and vision.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the media discourse surrounding advertisements for Indonesian food products, such as the instant noodle brand Indomie, in Arab countries. The expansion of Indonesian food products in international markets, including in Arab nations, is largely driven by effective and culturally adaptive marketing strategies. This study focuses on the analysis of television commercials and advertising posters, aiming to uncover how linguistic, semiotic, and sociocultural elements are employed to construct persuasive advertising messages. The method used is discourse analysis, with data comprising transcripts of television advertisements and visual elements from promotional posters. The advertising strategies of these products seek to bridge cultural gaps by tailoring marketing messages to align with local values and preferences, despite the potential disparity between the idealized imagery constructed and the actual consumption realities. This study offers valuable insights into the significance of cultural adaptation in global marketing and its impact on consumer reception.

Abstract

This study examines the use of straattaal vocabulary in the television series De Tatta’s (2024), along with language attitudes and linguistic accommodation among youth in the Randstad region of the Netherlands. Straattaal is a form of street language that has developed within the Netherlands’ multicultural urban environments and is primarily used by young people as a means of social expression and identity. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, combining dialogue analysis from the first episode of De Tatta’s with data collected through questionnaires distributed to respondents residing in the Netherlands. The analysis is based on Leech’s (1981) theory of language functions, Niceforo’s (in Partridge, 1933) framework on the use of slang, Lambert’s (1967) theory of language attitudes, and Giles’ (1987) communication accommodation theory. The findings indicate that straattaal functions as an expressive, informative, directive, and phatic tool of communication. Most respondents demonstrate a high level of understanding of straattaal vocabulary and tend to adopt a convergent attitude in their interactions. However, the use of straattaal by the character Daan is generally perceived negatively by the respondents.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of the bourgeois class in the film Pourris Gâtés (2021) by Nicolas Cuche through the theoretical lens of Jean Baudrillard’s concept of hyperreality and Fredric Jameson’s notion of pastiche. The research problem focuses on how Pourris Gâtés depicts the simulated social transformation of the bourgeois class through the illusion of consumerism and hyperreality. The study employs film discourse analysis using both narrative and visual approaches, grounded in media ideology theory, hyperreality, and the consumption of signs. The findings indicate that the main characters undergo a symbolic transformation rather than a structural change. Their identities are constructed through the consumption of luxury goods and social relations that function as status symbols, rather than through labor or authentic experiences. Poverty is aesthetically represented as a moment of learning rather than as an oppressive structural reality. The jobs taken on by the main characters serve as educational stages that remain under the control of privilege. In this way, Pourris Gâtés demonstrates how the bourgeois class sustains itself through a narrative of hyperreality framed within a moralistic aesthetic.

Abstract

Taman Literasi Martha Christina Tiahahu (TLMCT) is a tourist attraction located in South Jakarta that has been established since 1948. As a tourist attraction, TLMCT has signages and facility markers to facilitate visitors to find and utilize the facilities at the park. Those signs use code preference, inscription, and emplacement to maximize the information delivery. The formulation of the problem in this research is how the code preference, inscription, and emplacement of linguistic landscape (LL) at TLMCT. This research aims to explain the code preference, inscription, and emplacement of LL at TLMCT. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used in this research. The LL data were analyzed using Spolsky and Cooper’s (1991) taxonomy of sign functions and Scollon and Scollon’s (2003) place semiotics theory. The results of the analysis show that a total of 118 LL at TLMCT has four functions, which are informative signs, warning notices and prohibitions, commemorative plaques, and advertising signs. Meanwhile, the code preference used in LL at TLMCT shows the attitude of prioritizing Indonesian language. In terms of inscription, LL at TLMCT use a variety of materials that indicate the period of the LL use. The colours used in LL make the LL enhance readability and reflect TLMCT’s colour identity. Almost all LL were placed in locations appropriate to their context. Linguistically, LL at TLMCT has sufficiently fulfilled Indonesian language rules; nevertheless, there are some mistakes in the LL that need to be corrected.

Abstract

This study examines the multimodal elements in the campaigns of STIVORO (Stichting Volksgezondheid en Roken), the Netherlands' first national organization dedicated specifically to tobacco control. The objective of this research is to analyze and describe the roles of visual and verbal elements in STIVORO’s campaigns in conveying anti-smoking messages to the Dutch public. This research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach and applies the theory of multimodality developed by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006). The research objects consist of eight posters, classified based on their target audience: active smokers and passive smokers. The findings reveal that visual and verbal elements work collaboratively in constructing anti-smoking messages. However, the modality in the posters targeting active smokers is higher than that in those targeting passive smokers. This is due to the use of real human figures and a more varied color scale in the former group. Moreover, the campaigns aimed at active smokers employ the word Ik (“I”) to establish a more personal connection with the audience, in contrast to the more socially oriented verbal texts found in the posters targeting passive smokers.

Abstract

This article explores Maurice Merleau-Ponty's thought on the role of the body in shaping human experience, focusing on two key concepts: body schema and motor intentionality. Contrasting with the dualistic approach of modern Western philosophy that separates body and consciousness, Merleau-Ponty asserts that the body is not merely an object but an active subject in the world. The body schema is understood as a dynamic and pre-reflective structure that enables individuals to perceive the position and movement of their bodies within a situational space. Motor intentionality, as illustrated through the case of Schneider, shows that the body has the capacity to project meaning and respond directly to the world without cognitive reflection. This writing emphasizes the need to rehabilitate the role of the body in contemporary philosophical discourse, particularly in understanding the human-world relationship holistically.

Abstract

Silat Pisau is a distinctive cultural heritage of the Anambas Islands Regency. Although it has existed for quite some time, its presence has remained relatively obscure—possibly due to its exclusion from modern silat organizations. Silat Pisau began to develop several years before Indonesia’s independence in the village of Candi, Anambas Islands Regency, with the knife serving as the primary weapon in its practice. The use of this weapon carries both practical and philosophical significance. This paper aims to provide an overview of the existence and transmission of Silat Pisau in the Anambas Islands Regency. A qualitative approach was employed in this study, utilizing literature review, observation, and interviews. Analysis of the movements and the tradition of inheritance reveals that the knife is used primarily due to its accessibility; it can be found easily in nearly every household. Its relatively small size and shape also make it convenient to carry. Furthermore, the transmission of this tradition contains symbols or signs that can be interpreted as moral guidelines for personal conduct and social interaction.
