Abstract

Abstract

Developing elementary school students’ ability to construct simple English sentences remains a challenge, highlighting the need for engaging instructional media. This study investigated the effect of the English SingSing YouTube channel on students’ ability to construct simple English sentences. A quantitative approach employing a quasi-experimental posttest-only control group design was used. The participants were 42 fourth-grade students at Al A’raf Elementary School in Southwest Aceh, divided into an experimental group and a control group. Data were collected through a writing test and analyzed using descriptive statistics and an independent-samples t-test. The results indicated that the experimental group achieved a higher mean post-test score (72.86) than the control group (60.48). A significant difference was found between the two groups (p = .004), demonstrating the positive effect of the English SingSing YouTube channel on students’ ability to construct simple English sentences. These findings suggest that the channel is an effective supplementary medium for elementary English instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students’ experiences of the Interactive Lecture Method in learning English vocabulary at SMPIT Insan Madani, Southwest Aceh. This study employed a qualitative case study design involving 11 eighth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis framework. The findings revealed three main themes. First, students experienced clearer explanations through interaction, faster understanding through question-and-answer activities, and reported feeling happy, enthusiastic, more confident, and less bored during learning. Second, students memorized vocabulary through repeated practice and by linking new words to the teacher’s explanations. Third, the challenges of the Interactive Lecture Method included forgetting words easily, difficulties with vocabulary, speaking, verbs, tenses, and listening, as well as low self-confidence and limited attention. This study highlights that the Interactive Lecture Method provides interactive learning experiences that support vocabulary learning while also revealing the challenges students encounter during the learning process.

Abstract

This study assessed Webtoon's efficacy as a digital teaching tool for raising eighth-grade students' reading comprehension at SMPN Unggul Tunas Nusa. Using a quasi-experimental research design with a pre-test and post-test, a quantitative research approach was used within a single group. Thirty‑five eighth‑grade students were purposively sampled as participants. The study was conducted across six meetings, comprising a pre‑test, four treatment sessions that used Webtoon based narrative texts, and a post‑test. The performance of the students was evaluated using a 20-item reading comprehension test with multiple choices both before and after the educational intervention. A Shapiro–Wilk normality test and a Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used to analyse the collected data because the data were not normally distributed. The findings demonstrated a considerable reading comprehension improvement following the use of Webtoon, with an average score rising significantly from 76.00 to 96.86 between the pre-test and post-test. Furthermore, The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test analysis yielded statistically significant results differences between the two sets of scores (Z = –5.212, p < 0.05). The effect size calculation (r = 0.881) also reflected a strong practical effect. Overall, the findings supported the effectiveness using Webtoon as an online teaching resource designed to enhance pupils' reading comprehension and suggested its integration into English language teaching to facilitate more interactive and engaging reading instruction.

Abstract

Speaking anxiety is a prevalent psychological challenge among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, leading to avoidance of oral participation, hesitation in responding to questions, and fear of negative evaluation. This study aimed to identify and classify the levels of speaking anxiety among students in Academic Speaking classes at STKIP Muhammadiyah Aceh Barat Daya, categorizing them as low, moderate, or high. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, the research involved 30 students from the fourth, sixth, and eighth semesters of the English Education Study Program who had completed Advanced Speaking prerequisites, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using an adapted Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) with 33 statements via Google Forms, and analyzed using frequencies and percentages. Findings showed that 90.0% of students experienced moderate speaking anxiety, 6.7% low anxiety, and 3.3% high anxiety, with a mean total score of 101.93. Item-level analysis revealed the highest anxiety was linked to fear of failing to keep up with lessons and speaking about unprepared material, reflecting test anxiety, while lowest scores related to physical panic symptoms. These findings suggest that most students experienced moderate anxiety, sufficient to hinder participation in speaking activities, highlighting the need for supportive, well-structured speaking instruction.

Abstract

Listening is an essential skill in English language learning, yet many EFL learners experience difficulties in understanding spoken English and identifying specific information. This study aimed to investigate the use of short video clips in improving students’ listening skills in identifying specific information at STKIP Muhammadiyah Aceh Barat Daya. This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test control group design. The participants consisted of 30 students from the sixth and eighth semesters of the English Education Department, who were divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group received listening instruction using four short video clips, while the control group received conventional listening instruction. Data were collected through a 20-item multiple-choice listening comprehension test and analyzed using descriptive statistics and independent-samples t-tests. The results showed that the mean score of the experimental group increased from 44.33 in the pre-test to 73.33 in the post-test, while the control group increased from 26.67 to 52.33. The independent-samples t-test showed a significance value of 0.000, which was lower than 0.05, indicating a statistically significant difference between the post-test scores of the two groups. Therefore, the findings demonstrate that the use of short video clips significantly improved students’ listening skills in identifying specific information. The study suggests that short video clips can serve as an effective and engaging audiovisual medium for supporting listening instruction in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

English pronunciation remains one of the most challenging skills for young EFL learners, and engaging, low-anxiety media such as songs are often recommended to support its development at the elementary level. This study aims to examine sixth-grade students' responses to learning pronunciation through English songs at SD Al-Araf. A quantitative descriptive research design was employed, involving 20 sixth-grade students selected through purposive sampling; data were collected using a 16-item Likert-scale questionnaire covering four aspects, namely interest, motivation, confidence, and perceived improvement, and analyzed descriptively using means, standard deviations, and percentages. The results showed that students' total scores (sum of 16 Likert-scale items) ranged from 56 to 77, out of a theoretically possible range of 16–80, with a mean total score of 70.15 (SD = 5.46); 75% of respondents were classified into the "Strongly Agree" category and the remaining 25% into the "Agree" category, with no students showing neutral or negative responses. The overall grand mean across the 16 items reached 4.38, or 87.7% of the maximum score, falling into the "Very High" category, with interest and enjoyment obtaining the highest mean scores while confidence, particularly regarding shyness in pronouncing words aloud, obtained the lowest. This study concludes that students perceived English songs as a highly effective affective and motivational medium that fosters an enjoyable, low-anxiety learning atmosphere, although sustained and structured practice is still needed to strengthen students' individual confidence. Teachers are therefore encouraged to continue using English songs while incorporating corrective feedback and opportunities for individual practice to further optimize students' pronunciation development.

Abstract

This study explores the experiences of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Jeumpa in learning English vocabulary through visual video media, focusing on their impressions, understanding, and challenges. The study is grounded in Mayer's Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, which suggests that combining verbal and visual information enhances meaningful learning. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with ten purposively selected seventh-grade students and analyzed thematically using NVivo 12. The findings revealed one major theme, students' experiences of learning vocabulary through visual video media, with three subthemes: positive impressions, improved understanding, and learning challenges. Students generally perceived visual videos as enjoyable and motivating, helping them improve vocabulary retention, pronunciation, and comprehension. They also reported that the combination of images and audio made new vocabulary easier to understand and remember. However, they encountered challenges, including unfamiliar vocabulary, pronunciation difficulties, and videos that were too long or too fast. The study concludes that visual video media can effectively support English vocabulary learning when accompanied by appropriate video selection, suitable pacing, and teacher guidance. The findings also support Mayer's Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning and provide practical implications for English teachers.
