Abstract

Smallholder farmers in Svay Rieng Province, Cambodia, play a crucial role in the country's agricultural sector, particularly in vegetable production. Despite facing numerous challenges such as limited access to resources, climate change, and market uncertainties, these farmers contribute significantly to the national food security. This study aims to explore the technical knowledge, technical adaptation and practices of vegetable cultivation, and to analyze the economic efficiency of vegetable cultivation of farmers in Svay Rieng and Svay Chrum districts, Svay Rieng province, Cambodia. The household survey was conducted on 92 farmers in ten target communities, with at least three types of vegetables planted by each household. The result revealed that nearly two-thirds of farmers have over nine years of experience in vegetable cultivation, with most receiving technical training from the HEQCIP Project team. Nearly 70% of non-target farmers received training from government agencies and NGOs. A high percentage of survey farmers (90% target farmers and 75% non-target farmers) share their technical knowledge and experiences on vegetable cultivation with their relatives, neighbors, and other farmers in their communities. At least three different types of vegetables were planted by each household in target communities, including onion leaf, cucumber, wax gourd, gourd, cabbage, luffa gourd, herbs, morning glory, eggplant, pumpkin, spiny, and long-bean. The percentage of farmers who applied techniques provided by the project to integrate with their experiences was high (76% target farmers and 52% non-target farmers). However, only 17% target and 11% non-target farmers adapted the full technical packages provided by the project. The survey found that 75% of target and 50% non-target farmers improved their livelihood status, with 50% using their incomes from vegetable selling for income generation activities, 80% for purchasing household materials and equipment, and 10% for repaying in-debts.

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) have an important role in the Indonesian economy, but in reality business actors still face challenges in financial management and financial literacy, one of which is MSMEs in the Riau Islands Province. Based on the analysis of the situation, the service team carried out this community service activity with the aim of improving the financial literacy skills of MSME actors in Riau Islands Province through basic accounting training. MSME actors really need this activity because there is still a lack of knowledge in the preparation of simple financial  statements. The method of implementing activities was carried out by lectures illustations, illustrations, discussions, and questionnaire distribution. The results of the activity showed an increase in participants' understanding in compiling simple financial statements, separating personal and business finances, and implementing financial recording using Excel. Participants also showed interest in using digital tools and conveyed the need for advanced training in financial planning and online marketing. This activity proves that participatory and contextual community-based training can be an effective solution in increasing the financial capacity of MSMEs. The sustainability of training results requires further assistance and digital infrastructure support from the government and educational institutions.

Abstract

This article presents the outcomes of an action research project conducted by 30 Honours students from a comprehensive university in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The academic assignment required students to engage directly with 30 small and informal businesses operating in rural and peri-urban communities. The main objective was to identify operational challenges faced by these businesses and propose context-specific, practical solutions. The study highlights the value of experiential learning in simultaneously enhancing student competencies and contributing to local community development. Using business diagnostic tools such as SWOT and PESTEL analyses, students assessed each business and co-developed tailored interventions, ranging from infrastructure improvements to digital marketing strategies. Commonly identified problems included power outages, poor financial literacy, informal operations, low customer retention, and limited scalability. Corresponding solutions included the use of solar energy, social media marketing, basic bookkeeping templates, and partnership development strategies. Reflections submitted by students demonstrated high levels of contextual awareness, creativity, and diagnostic accuracy, though challenges were observed in areas such as research triangulation, feasibility planning, and academic writing. The project culminated in the development of a Mini Solution Toolkit, featuring templates and checklists tailored to the needs of informal entrepreneurs. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on community-engaged scholarship and practical entrepreneurship education, with implications for curriculum design, local policymaking, and small enterprise support. It positions academic institutions as potential catalysts for inclusive economic development.

Abstract

This paper examines the impact of university–industry–cooperative partnerships on knowledge transfer, innovation, and skills development within higher education. Drawing on a comprehensive literature review, the study highlights the growing importance of collaborative engagement between academic institutions, industries, and cooperatives in addressing contemporary socio-economic challenges. The review reveals that such partnerships enhance the relevance of academic programmes by aligning them with industry needs, thereby equipping graduates with practical skills that improve employability and entrepreneurial readiness. They also facilitate innovation through joint research projects, knowledge co-creation, and the commercialization of academic outputs, thereby contributing to economic development. Furthermore, the study underscores the role of cooperatives as important stakeholders in these partnerships, particularly in contexts where community development and inclusive economic growth are priorities. By engaging cooperatives, universities not only strengthen local development initiatives but also encourage socially responsive research and teaching practices. Despite these benefits, the literature identifies persistent challenges such as misaligned objectives, resource constraints, and weak policy support, which can limit the effectiveness of such collaborations. Overall, the review demonstrates that sustainable university–industry–cooperative partnerships require strong governance structures, mutual trust, and supportive policy environments. The paper concludes that strengthening these collaborations is critical for improving innovation ecosystems, promoting inclusive growth, and ensuring that higher education contributes meaningfully to both economic and social development.

Abstract

This community service activity was carried out at the Raudhatul Ulum Saka Tiga Islamic Boarding School, Ogan Ilir, involving 40 students from the Integrated Islamic High School as participants. The activity focused on introducing and understanding the concept of Income Tax (PPh) as an effort to foster awareness of tax obligations from an early age. The program was implemented over three days and consisted of three main stages: introduction, application, and evaluation. The introduction stage was conducted through socialization sessions and interactive video presentations explaining the basic concepts and functions of income tax in supporting national development. The application stage included simulations and simple case studies illustrating how income tax is calculated and applied in everyday economic activities. Meanwhile, the evaluation stage involved pre-tests, post-tests, and participant reflections to assess learning progress and attitude changes. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ understanding of the basic concepts of income tax and a growing awareness that paying taxes represents an act of civic and social responsibility. The novelty of this activity lies in its integration of Islamic values within tax education, where the concept of paying taxes was contextualized as part of a Muslim’s moral duty (fardhu kifayah) and contribution to communal welfare. This Islamic-based approach is particularly relevant to the boarding school environment, fostering not only tax literacy but also ethical and spiritual awareness that aligns with national and religious values.

Abstract

This community service activity disseminates the research results of the project leader and is aimed at MSME partners in Lampung Province engaged in various business sectors, including handicrafts, snacks, culinary products, beverages, coffee, tapis, batik, and fashion. Green Economy-based financial management refers to a financial management concept that integrates environmental sustainability as a key component in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Based on situation analysis and an initial survey, the main problems faced by MSMEs were identified as: (1) weak financial management, (2) limited product marketing through digital platforms, and (3) inadequate production waste management. The implementation method included situation analysis, capacity building through knowledge sharing and training, as well as monitoring and evaluation activities. The results of this program showed: (1) improved knowledge and understanding among participants regarding environmentally friendly financial management practices, (2) enhanced ability of MSMEs to market products through digital marketing, thereby increasing income and business continuity, and (3) better waste management practices using the 3R approach (reduce, reuse, recycle) to create value-added products. Overall, this activity has made a significant practical contribution by strengthening MSMEs’ capacity to apply sustainable financial management and digital marketing strategies that support long-term business resilience and environmental sustainability.
