Abstract

The problem of hypertension in the elderly continues to increase due to many factors, one of which is being overweight. Overweight can be seen in the Body Mass Index (BMI) value. If the BMI is excessive, it will trigger an imbalance in the body or the risk of falling. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between BMI and the risk of falling in elderly people with hypertension at the Husnul Khatimah Elderly Home in Wajak District, Malang Regency. The study design used a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 64 hypertensive elderly individuals, with a sample size of 55 hypertensive elderly individuals selected using simple random sampling. The independent variable was BMI, and the dependent variable was the risk of falling. Data analysis used the Spearman rank test. The results of this study showed that almost half (49.1%) of respondents were overweight according to their BMI; and had a high average risk of falling (63.6%). The Spearman's rank test showed a relationship between BMI and the risk of falling in hypertensive elderly people at the Husnul Khatimah Elderly Home in Wajak District, Malang Regency (p value 0.011; r of 0.339. It is recommended that elderly people lose weight and increase physical activity. Nursing homes should conduct initial BMI screening for elderly residents, and researchers should conduct further studies through health education on BMI management and the risk of falls in elderly people with hypertension.

Abstract

Increased blood glucose levels in older adults are associated with the aging process, which is characterized by decreased insulin sensitivity and reduced skeletal muscle mass and function, leading to suboptimal glucose utilization. Elderly exercise is a structured physical activity that can serve as a non-pharmacological intervention to support metabolic regulation in older populations. This study aimed to describe the profile of blood glucose levels among older adults after participating in an elderly exercise program based on a community elderly school. This study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-shot case study approach involving 15 respondents aged 60–76 years at the SMART “Teratai” Elderly School in Bandungrejosarisari, Sukun, Malang. The instruments used included an observation sheet and a random blood glucose measurement conducted once after the exercise session. Data were analyzed descriptively, including mean, median, standard deviation, minimum, and maximum values. The results showed that the median blood glucose level after the exercise was 107 mg/dL, with a range from 52 mg/dL to 326 mg/dL. Most respondents were female (93.3%) and aged between 60–75 years (86.7%). These findings indicate that the majority of older adults had relatively controlled blood glucose levels after participating in the exercise program. In conclusion, elderly exercise programs conducted through elderly schools have the potential to serve as a promotive strategy in maintaining metabolic health among older adults.

Abstract

One effort to maintain digestive health is to consume foods containing probiotics obtained from local foods, namely fermented foods such as tempeh, pickles, tempoyak, tauco and tape. Probiotics that breastfeeding mothers get from daily consumption of local food are good for the health of the mother's digestive tract and their babies from breastfeeding. The total lactic acid bacteria in breast milk is between 5,000 – 46,000 CFU/ml, it is estimated that a baby every day obtains around 500 thousand to 5 million lactic acid bacteria cells. This study aims to determine the behavior of breastfeeding mothers in utilizing local food sources probiotics. This research method is an analytic survey with a cross sectional design. The population of this study were all breastfeeding mothers who had babies aged 0-2 years at PMB Muzilatul Nisma with a total sample of 10 people using accidental sampling technique. The research was conducted from December 2022 to July 2023 using an e-questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The results showed that there was no relationship between knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of breastfeeding mothers regarding the use of local food sources of probiotics (p value 0.491; 0.576; 0491). There is a relationship between food taboos for breastfeeding mothers regarding the use of local food sources of probiotics (p value = 0.024). It would be better if midwives could increase education regarding local food sources of probiotics and breastfeeding mothers could increase their knowledge and utilization of probiotic sources from local food.
