Abstract

While Wittgenstein is not famous for his writings on religion, it iscertainly possible to interpret his work in such a way that it can beapplied to religion. As Wittgenstein's work is generally divided inearly and late work, this paper provides two interpretationregarding religion. His early work – Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus – can be considered a form of negative theology. His later work – Philosophical Investigations – offers ananthropologic method, i.e. the language game, that can be appliedto religion.

Abstract

The author introduces a way of theologising by way of a particular paradigm, that is, ‘freedom’ paradigm. From the philosophical viewpoint this way of thinking according to the paradigm is chosen with the consideration that it has become one of the central themes in modern thought, is not under the level of reflection reached by the modern thought, and conforms the requirement of reason to borderlessly question the fundamental cause of everything. From the theological viewpoint, the choice for this paradigm has a consequence that ‘freedom’ becomes the reference, towards which theological reflection always directs itself. The author shows that ‘freedom’ paradigm brings the potential to be the reference in understanding and formulating Christian fundamental doctrines on many themes: on God and the reality of creation, humanity (theological anthropology), Jesus Christ (Christology), grace and sacraments, concepts of salvation (soteriology), history and its final meaning (eschatology), actual themes like human rights, freedom to have religion, et cetera.

Abstract

The article discusses the identity of Christianity in Indonesia. The discrepancy between tradition and relevancy occurs when 'identity' is understood as static.Onthe contrary, when identity is viewed as dynamic, a dialectical balance between tradition and relevancy is required. Identity does not necessarily mean uniformity. It may instead mean 'united diversity'. The Church in Indonesia becomes 'Indonesian Church' only if she is capable of making significant interaction between the universal Church (tradition) and Indonesian peculiar situation (relevancy).

Abstract

Neturei Karta is a Jewish group that usually considered belongs to larger ‘ultra-Orthodox’ Judaism. This group established its community in Jerusalem since early 19th century, but never acknowledges the modern state of Israel and its administration. Its members never take Israeli Shekel notes, never join the Army Reserve, which is compulsory for adult Israeli, never sing Israel’s national anthem, never celebrate Israel Independence Day, and never set foot to the holiest place in the Judaism, the Wailing Wall – but they pay taxes to the state they hate so much. This paper explores the nature of this group and its position against Zionism. The main focus is about their anti-Zionism ideology in connection with the notion of Jewish ‘homeland’ and ‘diaspora’. Neturei Karta is a transnational religious phenomenon. It may differ from other transnational religious groups in its challenge to Zionism on the issues of ‘(Jewish) homeland’ and ‘Jewish diaspora’. This dissident voice within the Jewish history is deemed important to reassess the the exercise of power by Israeli in dominating and colonizing the Other, the Palestinians. Keywords :*Jewish, *Judaism, *Zionism, *anti-Zionism, *ideology, *diaspora, *homeland, *ultra-orthodox, *exile, *holy land, *promised land, *chosen people, *alienation, *geopiety, *'hyphenated' Jews

Abstract

Nietzsche’s early work that gives wide exploration of the idea of truth is his unpublished essay entitled Wahrheit und Lüge in Ausermoralischen Sinne (1872). His controversial statement in this essay was “Truths are illusions”, opening many interpretations among scholars in understanding his position on truth. Sarah Kofman argues that it is useless to speak about truth in Nietzsche’s philosophy, for values are neither true nor false. Referring values to truth means forgetting to place oneself “beyond good and evil.” Unlike Kofman, Maudemarie Clark separates sharply Nietzsche’s critique of metaphysics and his denial of truth. Clark argues that Nietzsche rejects metaphysics and eventually overcomes it in his own work, but also that he ultimately affirms the existence of truths and therefore does not undermine his own theory when he claims truth for his own position. Clark’s strategy in defending her theses tries to explain that there is a turning (Kehre) in Nietzsche’s position. This article wants to offer an interpretation that Nietzsche does not make a new theory of truth in WL, but rather examines and constates truths that hold true. With his subtile and metaphoric style, Nietzsche might want to vivify the symbolic and figurative elements in language before the truth or reality that already escapes languages.

Abstract

Abstract

Everyone longs for an emancipated life as children of God. Everybody hopes for a life without discrimination, oppression and suppression. People have talents to support their lives. Hagar, a biblical figure, is a model of a woman who owns the talents. Hagar, the slave of Sarah, tried hard to overcome the violence and oppression in her life, and she succeeded. Her personality could be a model for many women trying to defend their rights and dignities, especially in Asia. Hagar sets an example of defending the marginalised. Her struggle becomes an instrument to achieve the equality and the harmony of life for both men and women. Hagar is an inspiration, as she strongly believes in God who saves and frees her. She had the courage to escape from his master’s loyalty and hence she was independent: she did not give up amid the many difficulties she faced as a single parent. The author is convinced that only when men and women work and walk together in one heart and mind to create a more dignified humanity as willed by God, will this kind of struggle succeed.

Abstract

Abstract

Han Feizi is a Chinese thinker who lived in the 3rd century BCEand had the opportunity to inspire the Emperor Qin Shi Huangdiwho is acknowledged as the founder of the Empire of China.Taking the path of his realist Confucian teacher Xunzi (contrary toMengzi who was an idealist Confucian), he believed in the evilcharacter of the human being, as basically everyone only prioritizesits own needs. Therefore Han Feizi deems it most important thatthe ruler establishes order and peace in society. As such Han Feiziteaches a political theory that differs from the mainstream of theother classical Chinese thinkers in general who consider socialethics as most significant. To establish harmony in society, he findsstrict laws, shrewd statecraft and clear authority more decisive thanthe personal moral virtues of the ruler as taught by Confucius. Inorder to govern effectively and efficiently, the ruler should employthe “two handles” of governing by punishing law breakers andrewarding law abiders proportionally vis-à-vis all his subjects. Itwas indeed that kind of governance that was pursued by MaoZedong while dealing with the officials of the Communist Party ofChina, resembling that what the Government of China did to dealwith civil unrest in Tibet in the 1950s and 2008, and now in Urumqias well.
