According to Antonio Negri, one may recognize the modern culture with hegemonizing power of the Empire or the superstate which is a mutual symbiosis of liberal democracy and modern capitalism. On the one hand the Empire attempts to subjugate and to regulate whatever social domains inasmuch as there is no longer insurgent agents which are capable to live outside the political and economical structure of this power. On the other hand, the more the Empire regulates social life the more the social domains per se are becoming fluid and modifiable. This flexibility or fluidity of social domains embodies within a kind of social body, which Negri names as the multitude. Agents of this kind of adaptable collectivity inherently exhibit natural capability of sharing. The capability to share of the multitude makes the Empire difficult to completely defeat and to conquer the social life. In other words, the multitude opposes the power to unify everything under the single political and economical flag of The Empire. Negri argues for this resistant capablity as the biopolitics of the multitude against the disciplinary force of the Empire. Nowadays, the capability of sharing is something familiar for nearly all local cultures in Indonesian Archipelago. Negri’s account of the power of sharing of the multitude reminds us in order to revitalize this capability of sharing within our cultural heritages.

Simone de Beauvoir and Emmanuel Levinas are two of the leading philosophers who gave rise to the idea of transcendence. While for Beauvoir transcendence is a fully human effort (particularly among women) to come out of the shackles of patriarchal culture, for Levinas transcendence extends to a broader scope, that is, to humanism as well as to the relationships among people. Beauvoir would see transcendence as women’s efforts to break out of the structures of patriarchy through the three strategies it offers, viz., that women must work, engage in intellectual activities, and become perpetrators of action for the sake of social transformation. As for Levinas, transcendence is closely associated with human face. The face is not merely an object of intentional consciousness, but representing the significance of human transcendence. Through the face, one might recognise the presence of others. On the other hand, it shows the face of infinite dimensions in such a way that it cannot be subdued by the attempts of human consciousness willing to master it.

Spiritual awareness is one’s experience the living mind and body as a whole. It goes beyond mind and body, but also expands between the self and the world. At the center of human consciousness through the spiritual moments there is a sense of being deeply related with everything, the sense of being together with the whole universe. This kind of spiritual awareness has been threatened by the modern scientific world. The spirit of modernism to question and to break down nature, religion, and tradition under the pretext of pragmatic utopia of growth has brought humanity into an alarming and frightening phase of world civilization. Fritjof Capra says that the main problem of the existential crisis of modern humans is caused by the crisis of perception, mainly with the influence and errors from science as well as from Cartesian and Newtonian thoughts in perceiving the reality mechanically. Mysticism can be seen as an alternative to liberate modern humans to become authentic persons.

Wilhelm von Humboldt has put the foundation of Germany’s educational system. He emphasizes the importance of integrity in term of individual personality. Through education, one can develop one’s integrity and personality. The basis of this integrity is human freedom, that is, the freedom to decide one’s own worldview according to one’s choices in life. With this freedom, human is fashioned through the process of education to develop his/her intellectual knowledge, conscience and skills to work in life. One then can contribute genuinely to the development of one’s neighbourhood and society. However, Humboldt’s theory of education needs some critical remarks as well. Without bold conscience the concept of integrity and personality might be twisted into a justification of self-importance. Germany had its own criticism concerning this arrogance during the World War II. Apart from that, when interpreted and applied critically, Humboldt’s ideas of education may contribute a great deal to the development of educational system as well as philosophy of education in Indonesia.

The self and the city interrelate; both the self and the city arereflexive projects. Moreover, these reflexive projects aredialectally interrelated. Identity is not expressed in actions but(per-)formed through actions. Performativity entails a dialogue, with others and with the urban environment. The meaning ofthe self is public and shown in its created forms: the city.Knowledge is grounded not in theory but in practice, i.e.knowledge of the city is shown in social practices, styles andforms. The unforeseen and unwanted consequences of theurban risk society cause anxiety, which in turn causessegregation, exclusion and architecture of fear. To overcomethis, we citoyens need creativity as a virtue; the density of amegalopolis could also lead to an innovative attitude, hence theexperiences of the creative communities in Bandung.

The commodification of the body in health services covers a very broad study area. Contextualised in the Marxist understanding, the commodification of the body seemed to be associated with body as an economical commodity and alienating experience. This understanding has been intertwined with the commodification of the body in the health services, especially when it comes down to the practice of health care in which the patient’s body was treated merely as object for certain purposes. In the context of health care, treating the body as an object since Descartes not only bares the ethical-relational dimension of doctor-patient relationship, but also alienates the patient from her or his own body. This article argues that reducing a patient’s body to an object does not correspond to the nature and to the medical profession. In the light of Edmund D. Pellegrino and Alfred I. Tauber, two leading philosophers of medicine, the author will highlight the importance of the apprehension towards the patient as ‘persona’ as a response to the tendency.

One of the perspectives in evolution asserts that culture is also evolving like a biological evolution. When it concerns the biological evolution, the transmission unit is the gene. With regard to the evolution of culture, the transmission unit is the meme. The effort of doing analogy between the meme evolution and the gene evolution in this article is a methodological attempt to provide a further exploration for describing and apprehending the cultural phenomena. This article is at the same time an effort of applying a kind of politics of ontology to study the existence of memes in the study of culture. For this purpose, memetics has been pioneered as a scientific discipline that brings memes as the material object and as the formal object of Darwinian evolution. Critiques on the descriptive character of cultural evolution not necessarily turn to polemics for there is no strict differentiation between description and prescription. The evolution of culture that works in the Darwinian model is a different explanation as well as an alternative for the study of culture in general in an effort to apprehend the ontology of culture. The choice of Darwinian theory of evolution fills the principles of parsimony: simple and explaining.
