Abstract

For some contemporary thinkers, traditional and modern metaphysical systems were not considered as an adequate account, for they might have abolished the ontological difference. Such circumstances might have taken place because metaphysics was thought of as circumscribing by considering the whatness of any phenomena in form of, or oder of, the same, i.e. substance, essence or first cause. Jean-Luc Marion moves further and suggests phenomenological accounts that culminate in the givenness and the saturated phenomenon – ideas which open the possibilites to overcome the inadequacy of metaphysics. With the phenomenological third reduction, Marion shows that givenness already presents itself which is anterior to the dichotomy between essence and existence. This phenomenology of givenness enables phenomena to appear by itself in the saturated phenomena. In a paradoxical way, he shows that the constituting subject had already been constituted. Phenomenology, therefore, allows the subject to describe any phenomena in the form of, or order of, the other such as Marion proposed. Considering the contexts, this article may serve as an introduction to the notion of givenness and the saturated phenomenon.

Abstract

The post-Suharto period was expected to establish Indonesiaas a democracy, committed to equality between citizens andhuman rights, but respect for women's equal rights, for examplethe freedom to terminate a pregnancy, freedom of expression, freedom from polygamy, has not occurred. Indonesia hasenjoyed some expanded political liberties, but the civil libertiesof the Indonesian people are not protected. Why hasdemocracy failed to deliver civil liberties in Indonesia despite itssuccess in opening up political liberties? Why has democracystrengthened the ties between the government and dominantreligious institutions? These are the questions I address. In thecase of Indonesia, the transition to democracy has notnecessarily led to the liberalization concerning laws on genderand freedom of the individual. In fact it has led to the opposite. This is true in the case of women's sexual liberation, which iscondemned and restricted both by the democratic electedgovernment and the dominant religious institutions.

Abstract

Historically, the original impulse of capitalism is to be the emancipatory social power to liberate mankind from the fetter of Religious Leviathan reigning in the dogmatic Medieval Era. Ironically, after its historical global triumph, it becomes an Economic Leviathan of its own. The acute sense of structural sin and existential finitude nurtured by religious consciousness should make us aware of the hidden carnivorous dimension working deeply in the capitalist system that creates waste, crisis and destruction due to the cultivation of instant profit and unbridled greed as the moving forces of capitalism. KeyWords:*Watchman State, *Technical Reason, *Planning Reason, *Economic Leviathan, *Fascism, *Communism, *Global Capitalism, *SocialMarket, *Welfare State .

Abstract

Images and representations have long been used to tell the history of a place, to crystalize local memories, myths and beliefs, and to share meaningful values in a collective life. Sembilan Matahari, one of the nationally renown film-makers and video artists in Indonesia, has produced works of video-mapping (vmap) from 2010 to 2014 in public spaces as part of the local events to celebrate and re-activate the life of a people. Through Sembilan Matahari’s works the city of Jakarta, Pekalongan and Bandung have animated their iconic buildings to tell their stories and renew the memories of the place and the people. This article is based on a research examining the spatial construction of the event and the video-mapping, and how these spatial constructions relate to the geographical memories and narratives of the place. By using phenomenological approaches, this writing will explain how the three spatial constructions relate to one another, and how the reading/ interpretation of the video-mapping occur in experiencing Sembilan Matahari’s works.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper presents Foucault’s philosophical thinking on the constitution of the subject as the peak point of all his works from his early writings through his last writings, lectures, and seminars. All his works therefore can be summarized as a technology or a constitution of the self. To Foucault, this particular “self” should be seen as a result of a work of art that is ordered and engraved creatively and continuously. This “self” is seen as a mode of being which is unique, historical and contextual as well. This process Foucault calls an aesthetic of existence. This paper also shows Foucault’s own perspectives on the various radical and extreme movements that often times bring forth a lot of calamities to human life. Using his aesthetic of existence, he tries to look into such problems critically and presents some possible opportunities to minimize or even to erase all kinds of radicalizations and extremisms. Humankind should be able to care of him/her self and therefore he/she should be able to care for others.

Abstract

Abstract

Logical positivism and empiricism embody the scientific spirit thatputs science autonomous from culture and society. This can bequestioned from a cultural perspective, which accommodates thevarious contexts of human knowledge. In this perspective, scienceas a system of human knowledge is deeply rooted and colored bythe socio-cultural context.
