Abstract

Abstract

Suffering is a reality experienced by every human being as an integral part of their life. As part of one’s life, suffering is inevitable. Some people whose faith in the benevolent God has been shaken by their worst suffering ask the question: “Why does not God eliminate suffering if He is gracious and omnipotent?” This article sheds light on the problem of suffering using the Scriptures and theology, to find the different meanings behind it. From the biblical perspective, it will explore a number of meanings of suffering that essentially assert how suffering also serves to bring goodness to human life. These meanings are then complemented with a theological perspective which is based on the three aspects of soteriology, ecclesiology, and eschatology. Through this exploration, Christians are invited to “make peace” with their suffering by way of finding its different meanings. Suffering as a ‘gift’ might help the believers embrace life in its fullness and accept their being human. The concept of God as the ‘Loving Father’ could also help them find strength in facing suffering and grow in their faith as God’s children.

Abstract

Women in patriarchal cultures have been treated unjustly. They are looked upon as second-class beings and even repeatedly not considered a whole human being. Their presence is regarded as something incidental and not essential. For this reason the article wants to put forward and to explore Nawal el Sa'adawi's ideas in her novel Woman at Point Zero. The novel portrays the struggle of a woman in a life full of oppressions by the patriarchal system and culture. Firdaus, the main character in the novel, is a picture of the lives of women who continue to serve as the number two beings in a patriarchal culture. In this article, the author uses feminist existentialist Simone de Beauvoir's point of view to analyze the novel. It appears that both Beauvoir and Sa'adawi have echoed some strategies towards a full freedom for women to be fully acknowledged of their existence and they provided further suggestions for women to be aware of their own capabilities as a whole human being and to be brave without being overshadowed by male superiority.

Abstract

There has been a significant change in the Church as a communio since the secondVatican Council ( 1962-1965). The Council seemed to instigate a mode of doing theology with liberal overtone. New ways of looking at things had been shown quite impressively by the Church ever since. Indeed “Ecclesia semper reformanda”. This, however, is not the whole story, for in the case like contraception, and worse still, on magisterium in general, it turns out that the Church hardly changes. The dilemma has brought about many problems, practically as well as theologically. This article talks about the dilemma.

Abstract

The computer will become more and more influential as a mediator between man and his environment, due to its evolution as a device and increasing ubiquity. A growing number of people will own a personal computer or computer-like devices, such as cell phones, even though a ‘digital divide’ will continue to exist, separating social groups within societies. To denote a computer-mediated environment, the term non-space is proposed, derived from Vilém Flusser’s non-things which basically refers to computer-programs. Non-space is relative, fluid, non-material and non-locatable. Spatial metaphors, still used in present-day computer-interfaces, are inherently deficient and will be replaced by a more direct and intimate interaction with the computer. Life in non-space is essentially provisional, which causes a new existential anxiety. In the not so distant future, large portion of humanity will end up living their lives in ‘augmented reality’, a hybrid of the real world and non-space.

Abstract

The advancement of mainstream economics, especially in neoclassical-Austrian school, can be traced back to the implementation of methodological individualism, a methodological doctrine stating that every explanation on the macro level (i.e. society, economy, and politics) is based on the foundation of explanation on the micro level (individual) as an ontological unit. This is a kind of ‘atomism’ that could be found clearly in Hobbes, JS. Mill, and the Austrian School. This methodology produces curva and modelling in economics. We might need to distinguish tightly between political individualism and methodological individualism. Political individualism starts from the general assumption that freedom contributes to the individual development and the prosperity of the society and brings forward some practical propositions to support it. Meanwhile, methodological individualism does not bring particular proposition and condition, but simply points to the means based on the process of economy in the action of the individual. This paper tries to construct a critical view concerning the methodological individualism in order to open the possibility for other methodologies in economics.

Abstract

Phenomenology of Perception is one of the main philosophical works of a France phenomenological philosopher, Maurice Merleau-Ponty. In this book, Merleau-Ponty elaborates his reflection on the nature of the body based on the perception of the world. In “Sense Experience,” which is part of Phenomenology of Perception, explains the bodily experience and its relation to human’s mode of being in the world. This part is important to look upon, for it serves as the basis for Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenological thought on perception. In “Sense Experience”, while affirming his critique on empiricism and intellectualism, Merleau-Ponty also reflects the meaning of sense experience, the unity of the sense, the analytical attitude, the nature of the body, and the ambiguity of sense experience itself. Two key ideas surface from “Sense Experience,” that is, sense experience with and through the body, and bodily experience with and through the world. One might speak of the world, yet one is part of it. It is the body that allows such ambiguity.

Abstract

Abstract

Jean-Paul Sartre offers a different way of looking at artworks. He offers psychological as well as phenomenological perspectives. The artworks referred to by Sartre include music, painting, literature, and theater. In his thoughts related to works of art, Sartre offers a notion of analogon, that has a key role to explain his concept of imagination. With this notion, he goes further to explain the concept of irreality in artworks, of which analogon is a medium or a material vehicle. When enjoying an artwork, one is enjoying the analogon. Music can be seen as an excess of reality, literature finds its role within its social environment, a painting provokes a viewer to rise certain images in his or her cosciousness, and an actor in theater not simply portrays the characters of a personage because he becomes ‘not real’ in playing his role on the stage. All this brings to the understanding of artwork as irreality.
