Abstract

This study examines the Sedekah Bumi tradition in Kediri as a cultural practice that extends beyond an agrarian thanksgiving ritual and functions as a social mechanism that shapes, tests, and reproduces interreligious tolerance. Using a descriptive qualitative approach supported by structural functionalism and symbolic interactionism, this research reveals that relations among Muslim, Christian, and Catholic communities are constructed not merely through theological understanding but through everyday social practices that regulate patterns of interaction, role distribution, and the creation of shared meaning. The Sedekah Bumi tradition serves as a space for identity negotiation, enabling equal interaction through ritual participation, communal cooperation, and village deliberation, ultimately fostering a form of pragmatic rather than normative tolerance rooted in collective experience. Analytically, the tradition fulfills all four components of Talcott Parsons’ AGIL framework: adaptation to religious plurality and social change, goal attainment through shared agreement on rituals, integration through cross-faith interactions, and latency through the transmission of communal values such as cooperation and solidarity. The findings highlight that local wisdom operates as a dynamic form of social capital that strengthens the resilience of multireligious communities and serves as a crucial pillar in maintaining social harmony and stability amid potential identity fragmentation in contemporary society. Keywords: Sedekah Bumi, Practical Tolerance, Structural Fungcional.

Abstract

This article analyzes the charismatic leadership of the Prophet Muhammad during the pre-Battle of Badr period in Medina from the perspective of Max Weber’s sociology. This study employs a qualitative research method using a literature review approach, examining Islamic historical sources and Max Weber’s theory of charismatic leadership. This study found that the Prophet Muhammad emerged as a charismatic leader who gained legitimacy through his superior competence in conflict resolution, the creation of social order, and the fostering of unity in Medina. This leadership is evident in the formation of the concept of the ummah, the drafting of the Constitution of Medina as the foundation for communal life amidst diversity, and the construction of the mosque as the center of community life. According to Max Weber’s framework, the Prophet Muhammad fulfilled the characteristics of a charismatic leader. This was due to his ability to provide solutions to the social problems faced by the community and to secure the obedience of his followers based on their faith and trust in his authority. The Prophet Muhammad’s charismatic leadership has proven to have brought about tangible social change, transforming Medina from a place rife with conflict into a prosperous, peaceful, integrated, and civilized society. Abstract

Local religious traditions constitute an important aspect of Indonesian society and have long served as a medium for religious expression, social integration, and the preservation of cultural values. However, the processes of modernization, globalization, urbanization, and the rapid development of information technology have significantly transformed the meaning and practice of religious traditions in various regions. This article aims to analyze the transformation of local religious traditions from sacred dimensions toward cultural dimensions within the context of contemporary social change. The study employs a qualitative approach using a library research method by examining books, scholarly journal articles, and previous studies relevant to religious traditions, modernization, and social transformation. The analytical framework is based on Peter L. Berger’s Social Construction Theory, which emphasizes the processes of externalization, objectivation, and internalization in the construction of social reality. The findings reveal that modernization does not necessarily eliminate local religious traditions; rather, it encourages the reconstruction of their meanings and social functions. Many local religious practices that were previously understood primarily as sacred activities closely related to religious beliefs are now also perceived as cultural identities, instruments for preserving local heritage, mechanisms of social integration, and resources for cultural tourism. This transformation reflects an ongoing negotiation between traditional values and the demands of modernity, resulting in new forms of religious expression within society. Therefore, local religious traditions continue to survive as integral elements of social life despite experiencing shifts in meaning and orientation. The study concludes that religious traditions are socially constructed realities that are continuously reproduced and reinterpreted in response to changing social conditions. Keywords: local religious traditions, modernization, social change, social construction.

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) are the oldest Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia, having maintained a distinctive pattern of relationships between kiai (Islamic scholars) and santri (students) for centuries. This relationship is not merely educational in nature but also encompasses spiritual, cultural, and social dimensions. However, the advancement of modernization, globalization, digitalization, and increasing access to formal education has brought significant changes to interaction patterns within pesantren communities. This article aims to analyze the transformation of kiai–santri relations within the context of contemporary social change. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using a literature review method through the analysis of various scholarly works on pesantren, social change, and religious authority relations. The findings reveal that the relationship between kiai and santri has shifted from a highly hierarchical patron–client model toward a more dialogical and participatory form. Nevertheless, the moral and spiritual authority of the kiai remains a central element in pesantren life. These transformations are influenced by the development of information technology, the modernization of educational systems, the increasing literacy and critical awareness of santri, and broader changes in social structures. The study demonstrates that pesantren have been able to adapt to social changes while preserving their Islamic identity and traditions, which continue to serve as the foundation of their existence.

Abstract

Conflict in Islam has frequently been portrayed as a destructive force that threatens social cohesion and religious harmony. Such a perspective, however, fails to account for the historical and sociological dynamics through which Islamic institutions have often evolved amid competition, contestation, and doctrinal diversity. This article explores KH. Ahmad Bahauddin Nursalim's (Gus Baha) interpretation of the social functions of conflict through the analytical framework of conflict sociology. Employing a qualitative library research design, the study examines primary data drawn from Gus Baha's public lectures alongside classical and contemporary sociological literature and scholarly works on Islam and pesantren (Islamic boarding schools). The analysis is informed by Lewis Coser's functional theory of conflict, Georg Simmel's sociology of social interaction, Everett M. Rogers' diffusion of innovations theory, and Rodney Stark and Roger Finke's religious economy theory. The findings demonstrate that conflict should not be understood solely as a source of social disintegration. Instead, under particular social and religious conditions, it may facilitate the expansion of Islamic da'wah, accelerate the diffusion of pesantren, reinforce collective solidarity, and stimulate institutional innovation. Gus Baha's perspective suggests that conflict, when guided by ethical and religious values, can become a constructive mechanism for social transformation. Accordingly, conflict in Islam should be reconceptualized as a dynamic social process that contributes to institutional resilience, religious dissemination, and the continued development of Islamic communities rather than merely as a catalyst for fragmentation.

Abstract

Religious radicalism in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) has remained a contested issue in both academic and public discourse, particularly following several terrorism cases involving individuals with pesantren backgrounds. This study aims to examine the relationship between pesantren and religious radicalism by distinguishing empirical social realities from socially constructed stigma. The research employs a qualitative approach using descriptive-analytical methods based on an extensive literature review of scholarly books, journal articles, government reports, and relevant previous studies. The analysis draws upon the sociology of religion, social construction theory, and stigma theory to explain how public perceptions of pesantren are formed and to identify the factors contributing to radicalization. The findings indicate that the relationship between pesantren and religious radicalism is neither causal nor homogeneous. Radicalization emerges from the interaction of multiple factors, including religious leadership, hidden curricula, social networks, political dynamics, transnational ideological influences, and socio-economic conditions. At the same time, the majority of Indonesian pesantren function as institutions that promote Islamic moderation by internalizing the values of tasamuh (tolerance), tawazun (balance), i'tidal (justice), and tawassuth (moderation). The widespread perception linking pesantren to radicalism is largely the result of labeling and overgeneralization based on isolated cases rather than comprehensive empirical evidence. Therefore, efforts to prevent religious radicalism should be grounded in empirical research, strengthened through religious moderation initiatives, and supported by collaborative engagement among government institutions, academics, and pesantren to prevent the reinforcement of misleading stereotypes.
THE EMERGENCE OF HIZBUT TAHRIR INDONESIA (HTI) IN SUPPORTING TO PALESTINE Abdul Mujib

Abstract

This paper examines the paradox inherent in Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia's (HTI) stance on Palestinian solidarity within the context of globalization. HTI, as a transnational Islamist organization, ideologically opposes globalization as a Western-driven project that fosters poverty and cultural imperialism. Yet, in mobilizing support for Palestine, HTI inevitably appropriates the very mechanisms of globalization, including digital media, internet platforms, weekly bulletins (Al-Waie), and large-scale public demonstrations to disseminate its caliphate ideology. The paper poses two central questions: why does HTI conduct its support for Palestine, and how does it utilize modern media, a product of globalization to advance its objectives? The paper argues that HTI's support for Palestine is driven by a dual motivation: Islamic theological solidarity rooted in the defense of al-Aqsa Mosque and the concept of ummah, and a broader resistance to Western geopolitical hegemony. HTI rejects the human rights framing of the conflict as a Western manipulation designed to suppress the religious imperative of jihad, while simultaneously exploiting the globalized media landscape to amplify its counter-narrative and coordinate transnational mobilization. The paper further analyzes how HTI's caliphate project faces structural limitations within Indonesia's Pancasila state framework, an imagined community whose pluralist foundations are incompatible with HTI's universalist Islamic polity. The case concludes by demonstrating that HTI's position exemplifies Giddens' thesis that globalization is not a system one can choose to reject, it is an inexorable structural condition of modernity that reshapes even the most determined of its opponents. The banning of HTI in Indonesia in 2017 confirms these structural limits, yet HTI's theological framing of Palestine continues to shape Indonesian Islamic public discourse.

Abstract

This paper examines the resurgence of nonofficial religions in Indonesia during the post-Reformasi era and analyzes the factors that have encouraged their renewed public visibility and demands for equal citizenship rights. Historically, the Indonesian state's recognition of only a limited number of official religions resulted in the marginalization of indigenous belief systems and other nonofficial religions, forcing many adherents to identify themselves with officially recognized faiths in order to obtain basic civil rights. Employing a qualitative approach based on literature review and analysis of legal, historical, and policy documents, this study explores the relationship between state religious policy, minority rights, and democratic transformation. The findings indicate that the post-1998 democratization process, the strengthening of human rights discourse, constitutional reforms, advocacy by indigenous organizations such as Aliansi Masyarakat Adat Nusantara (AMAN), and the implementation of the Population Administration Law (UU Administrasi Kependudukan) have significantly contributed to the revival of nonofficial religions. These developments have enabled religious minorities to assert their identity more openly and to demand equal access to administrative services, marriage registration, employment, and legal recognition. Nevertheless, legal ambiguities, the continued influence of the Blasphemy Law, and the state's distinction between official and nonofficial religions remain substantial obstacles to achieving full religious equality. This study concludes that the resurgence of nonofficial religions reflects Indonesia's ongoing democratization and illustrates the need for a more inclusive legal framework that guarantees equal protection and citizenship rights for all religious communities regardless of official recognition.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the role of digital collections managed by the IAIN Kediri Library in improving information literacy among students. In the era of information disruption, libraries function not only as repositories of physical books but also as providers of technology-based knowledge access. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through direct observation of the library's digital services, in-depth interviews with librarians, and the distribution of questionnaires to students as service users. Data analysis was carried out through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the IAIN Kediri Library's digital collections, which include e-books, e-journals, and institutional repositories, play a significant role as a catalyst for student learning independence. Flexible accessibility (accessible anytime and anywhere) has been shown to increase students' frequency in searching for scientific references. However, the effectiveness of this literacy improvement is also influenced by students' technical abilities in filtering information. It was found that the availability of digital collections encourages students to be more critical in evaluating data sources, although technical constraints such as network stability and understanding of search features remain minor obstacles. It can be concluded that the IAIN Kediri Library's digital collection plays a vital role in enriching students' knowledge and improving their literacy standards. Optimizing services through more intensive outreach and developing digital platform interfaces is recommended to maximize the collection's benefits to the academic community.
