Abstract

This study is aimed to examine empirically the influence of financial leverage on bid-ask spread through market capitalization. The population are companies that listed in the LQ45 Index during periods 2011-2012. This study uses 35 companies listed in the LQ45 index during periods 2011-2012 as many as 70 observations. Data are collected from Indonesian Capital Market Directory. This study uses path analysis to examine the hypothesis. The results show that (1) the influence of financial leverage on market capitalization is negative. (2) the influence of market capitalization on bid-ask spread is also negative. (3) the influence of financial leverage on the bid-ask spread is positive. (4) simultaneously, financial leverage and market capitalization have influence on bid-ask spread. Indirectly, financial leverage has influence on bid-ask spread through the market capitalization. Then, direct influence of financial leverage on the bid-ask spread is stronger than indirect influence of financial leverage on the bid-ask spread through the market capitalization. Therefore, it can be stated that the real influence of financial leverage on bid-ask spread is direct influence. Keywords: Bid-Ask Spread, Financial Leverage and Market Capitalization.

Abstract

The subject of Christianity and Christians in the Middle East would seem to many be as oxymoronic as the topic of ‘Islam in the West’. While interest in Western-based Islam as faith-cum-political ideology and in Muslims as a distinctive polity has accelerated in line with global geo-political developments, relative ignorance regarding Christianity and Christians in the Middle East has been the norm rather than the exception. This paper is a modest attempt to redress the lack of attention hitherto given to Middle Eastern Christians as a multi-disciplinary research area. Keywords: Middle East, Christianity, Arab Christian, Eastern Christian, Muslim-Christian relations

Abstract

Reasoning in mastering the foundations of mathematics and mathematical competence is one that should be owned by students. While a model of discovery learning is one of the models of learning that must be applied at school in accordance with the curriculum learning goals of 2013, the purpose of this research was to describe the mathematical reasoning abilities of students through a model of discovery learning. The research method used was a qualitative exploratory type approach. The data has been obtained through mathematical reasoning tests and interviews. The result of this study is: 1) High ability students only mastered the indicator to propose allegations. The ability to file allegations limited to the ability to estimate answers with the reasons but the evidence provided was not appropriate; 2) Medium-capacity students only mastered the indicator to propose allegations. Ability to file allegations limited to the ability to estimate answers with the reasons but the evidence provided was not appropriate; 3) Low ability students could not master the six indicators of mathematical reasoning ability. In the indicator of filing suspicion, students estimated answers together with the reasons through trial and error, and students did not know the supporting concepts used in showing evidence. Student’s inability in mathematical reasoning was caused by the inability to master the concept correctly as well as not able to understand the problem and to provide evidence in solving the problem. Therefore, the application of discovery learning should be carried out continuously and consistently so that students can develop reasoning abilities well. Keywords: mathematical reasoning, discovery learning.

Abstract

Visualisation has been used for decades as a strategy to help readers construct meaning from reading passages. Teachers across the globe have introduced visualisation mostly to primary students with native language background. They used the strategy to understand their own language. Little is known how this strategy works for university students who learn foreign language. Visualisation can be done internally (by creating mental imagery) and externally (by drawing visual representation). The product of visualising texts by using both models can be further investigated to find out if the meaning represented is appropriate to the meaning written in the text. This study therefore aims at exploring meaning by analysing the visual representations drawn by 26 English Education Department students of Syiah Kuala University after they read a narrative text. The exploration was conducted by looking at the image-word relations in the drawings. To do so, we consulted Chan and Unsworth (2011), Chan (2010) and Unsworth and Chan (2009) on the image-language interaction in multimodal text. The results of the analysis have found that the equivalence, additive and interdependent relations are mostly involved in their visual representations; and these relations really help in representing meanings. Meanwhile, the other three relations which are word-specific, picture specific and parallel are rarely used by the students. Further discussion of the results is provided in this paper.  Keywords:visual representation, image-word relations, reading for meaning.

Abstract

The paradigm of development process in developing countries, especially Indonesia since the 80s, is based on economic development with the output in the form of economic growth. This model focuses on improving the productivity and consumption of households and governments. In fact, economic growth does not guarantee that everyone will benefit equally, which is shown by the disparity of income/inequality in society. Moreover, inequality can have implications for political, economic, social and security, which hinder the implementation of inclusive and sustainable development. Despite the high overall economic growth rates in Indonesia in the past decade, many policy makers and in international organizations have become increasingly concerned that this growth has been too uneven and often accompanied by rising income of inequality and poverty. Consequently, Indonesian government committed its Medium Term Development Plan (RPJM 2015-2019), to promoting inclusive economic growth as one of the directions in economic policy. Inclusive economic growth has become a strategic pillar for guiding the activities of the Asian countries, for instance: Indonesia in its operational strategy. However, there exists no clear definition or indicator to monitor the progress of inclusive economic growth at the country, project, or program level. This paper tries to review existing definitions of inclusive economic growth and proposes strategically view about inclusive economic growth to tackle down inequality and poverty in Indonesia. This paper also suggests that this might be a way forward to implement inclusive economic growth in Indonesia.

Abstract

The development of Shariah baking in Indonesia has been so tremendous that the banks should try their efforts to improve their operation. Risk management is vital to be implemented in order that the operation can minimize any risk. This study examines the impact of risk management practice on the profit and cost efficiency in the rural Islamic banks. The data were collected from 33 BPRS but only 29 could be analyzed using the current software. This study also tried to implement better software for financial report. Initially, the initial report shows that, on average, the efficiency is 64% in which the minimum is 30% and maximum is 100%. In fact, only five banks could achieve the efficiency that is from 29 banks during  the investigation. From city of origin, it was found that the banks in Pasuruan and those which are in Probolinggo are the most efficient.

Abstract

This study aims to find out whether there is a significant different improvement on students’ scores of reading descriptive text between the students who are taught through Tea Party technique and those who are taught through Drill and Repetition technique in teaching and learning process. Tea Party technique which is promoted by Beers (2003) is a team work that is formed by dividing students into groups. Moreover, Tea Party focuses on guiding the students to activate their schemata and be able to use their prior knowledge in reading text. The population of this study was the tenth grade students of SMAN 07 Banda Aceh. The sample was the students of class XIPA4 (as an experimental class) and XIPS2 (as a control class).  In this study, the writers used a True Experimental Design. The writers conducted a pre-test, treatments and a post-test to collect data, and used gain score calculation. The mean score of the pre-test in experimental class was 62 and the post-test was 78.4. Meanwhile the mean score of the pre-test in control class was 52.4 and the post-test was 68.8. The gain score in experimental class was 9.18, while in control class was 7.92. In addition, the analysis of t-test shows that t score t table or 1.932 1.71 at the level of significance 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 48. It is clear that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, that is there is a significant different improvement on the students’ reading comprehension between in the experimental class and in the control class. The improvement of students’ scores in the experimental class is higher than in the control class.  In other words, Tea Party technique can improve the students’ achievement in learning reading comprehension skills because it can create enjoyable learning atmosphere. Keywords:Tea Party Technique, reading skill, descriptive text.
