Abstract

This article analyzes how verbal language functions as a cultural practice in the Canary Bird Community "Konco Ngopi" in Ciledug, Tangerang, by examining the formation of distinctive terms, social functions, and interaction patterns both inside and outside the gantang arena. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of Speech Codes Theory and communication ethnography to interpret canary jargon not merely as a variation of language, but as a system of meaning that shapes identity, competition ethics, and social relations. Previous studies have generally been limited to descriptions of terms or different communities without linking speech codes to the competition space and communication network structure. Data was obtained through participant observation, in depth interviews, and documentation of cage bird activitiesand informal meetings (ngopi). Results indicate that terms influenced by Javanese, Sundanese, and Betawi languages function as internal codes for technical coordination, affirming membership boundaries, and strengthening solidarity. Community interactions are also supported by an egalitarian, (open channel) communication network pattern that facilitates continuous knowledge exchange.

Abstract

Consent is a fundamental normative concept in moral and social life, yet its complexity is often overlooked in everyday understanding. This article aims to philosophically examine the nature of consent as a normative power capable of transforming actions that were previously impermissible into permissible ones, while also analyzing the conditions that must be fulfilled for consent to be considered valid. This study employs a conceptual analysis method based on a literature review, examining major works in contemporary moral philosophy that discuss theories of consent. The analysis demonstrates that consent cannot be understood merely as an expression of individual will; rather, it functions as a normative mechanism that transforms the moral status of an action. However, its validity depends on the fulfillment of several crucial conditions: substantive conditions related to the nature of the action being consented to; epistemic conditions requiring adequate knowledge and understanding; volitional conditions ensuring freedom from coercion; and contextual conditions that take into account power relations and the surrounding social structures. Based on these findings, the article argues that consent constitutes a limited normative power, since its validity can only be recognized when these four conditions are fulfilled simultaneously.

Abstract

This study examines the Mbabar Mbubur tradition in Malang as a form of religious practice that integrates Islamic spirituality with Javanese local wisdom, within and beyond the framework of Clifford Geertz’s theory of cultural syncretism. Employing a qualitative approach based on library research, this study analyzes the transformation of calendrical slametan rituals which, in Geertz’s classic account (1960), were considered marginal and sporadic into a more structured and socially significant communal practice. The findings reveal that Mbabar Mbubur represents an adaptive and inclusive expression of Islam, manifested through ritual symbolism, communal food distribution, ancestral pilgrimage, and the reinforcement of social solidarity. This study argues that the tradition reflects a dynamic integration of religious variants (santri, abangan, and priyayi) that, in the contemporary context, transcends and reconfigures Geertz’s earlier typology. Theoretically, this research contributes to Islamic anthropology by repositioning local ritual as an active site of religious meaning-making, while empirically addressing the limited scholarly attention to specific ritual practices in Malang.

Abstract

Psychological trauma constitutes a complex emotional response to experiences that threaten an individual’s psychological integrity. Film serves as a critical medium for representing the dynamics of trauma and recovery, as illustrated in Silver Linings Playbook, which portrays the relational trauma experienced by Pat and Tiffany. This study employs a qualitative approach using content analysis of narrative structures, dialogues, and character behaviors. The analysis is grounded in Freudian psychoanalytic theory, particularly ego defense mechanisms, and Judith Herman’s trauma recovery model. The findings show that both characters initially rely on immature and maladaptive defense mechanisms, such as denial and acting out, in response to psychological distress. As their interpersonal relationship develops, these mechanisms gradually shift toward more adaptive forms, including sublimation. This transformation corresponds with Herman’s three stages of trauma recovery: safety, remembrance and mourning, and reconnection. This study argues that the film not only depicts trauma but also represents a processual model of psychological recovery mediated through supportive relationships. Theoretically, it contributes to film psychology by integrating psychoanalytic and trauma frameworks, offering a more comprehensive understanding of character transformation. Furthermore, it highlights film as a reflective medium capable of capturing both the manifestation and gradual resolution of trauma in a nuanced and dynamic way.

Abstract

Narcotics abuse in Indonesia, particularly in Lhokseumawe City, continues to rise, while studies on community-based rehabilitation integrating religious values and local wisdom remain limited. Existing approaches are largely dominated by medical models, with insufficient attention to socio-religious dimensions of recovery. This study aims to examine the implementation and effectiveness of a dayah-based rehabilitation model at the Moral and Mental Rehabilitation Center in supporting the social reintegration of former narcotics users. This research employs a qualitative approach, with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis involving stakeholders such as the Islamic Sharia Office, dayah managers, and participants. Data are analyzed through reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the center applies a holistic model based on religious teachings and local culture, including spiritual practices, character building, skills development, and social training. This approach is effective in enhancing spiritual awareness and facilitating social acceptance. However, limitations in medical support, assessment procedures, economic empowerment, and aftercare reduce its long-term effectiveness. This study contributes by proposing an integrative rehabilitation framework that connects legal, religious, and social approaches, offering a culturally grounded alternative model while enriching the discourse on rehabilitation and social reintegration.

Abstract

This study examines the paradox in Soppeng Riaja District, Barru Regency, which is known as a “santri city” but faces serious problems in waste management. Religious identities that emphasize cleanliness are not fully reflected in people's social behavior. This research aims to explore the social dynamics behind these problems and examine the role of educational institutions, society, and the government in formulating relevant solutions. With a sociological approach, the analysis is focused on how social constructions of cleanliness are formed, as well as the extent to which religious norms and government policies affect the collective behavior of society. The results of the study show that the main obstacles in waste management in Soppeng Riaja include low collective awareness, limited infrastructure, and weak coordination between parties. This research is expected to contribute to the development of policies based on socio-religious values to increase environmental awareness, as well as enrich the sociological study of social identity and environmental sustainability in religious societies.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the escalation of digital conflict between Southeast Asian and South Korean fan communities on the X platform and its impact on the economic behavior of Muslim consumers. The phenomenon of digital racism, which originated from a technical incident at a music concert, has transformed into an identity conflict that has damaged religious dignity through the stigmatization of the hijab. Using netnography, this study explores how such discrimination triggers consumer animosity, leading to tangible economic resistance. The results show that for Muslim consumers, religious honor has an intrinsic value that transcends brand loyalty, so that abuse of this identity triggers a boycott movement that threatens the sustainability of the global creative industry in the sharia market. As a solution, this study offers a reconstruction of muamalah ethics based on the principles of tabayyun, is, and maslahah to mitigate the risk of reputational damage and ensure fairness in the digital economic ecosystem. The integration of these values is expected to become a strategic framework for industry players to build a more inclusive and sustainable market relationship through respect for universal human dignity.

Abstract

The rapid development of the halal industry in Indonesia has led to an increasing number of halal-labeled products in the local retail market. This study aims to identify the consumer preference factors that influence purchasing behavior of halal products at Toserba Sunan Drajat, Nguwok Branch, Lamongan. The study focuses on three factors: trust in halal products, price, and product quality. This research employs a quantitative method with an associative and explanatory approach. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 50 respondents using an accidental sampling technique. The results show that the three preference factors simultaneously have a significant effect on halal product purchasing behavior. Partially, price is the dominant and significant predictor. Meanwhile, trust and product quality, although not individually significant, still have a positive influence within the model. These findings imply that competitive pricing is a key factor in managing halal products in pesantren-based local retail. Furthermore, this study provides empirical contributions to the study of halal consumer behavior in the context of local retail, which remains relatively underexplored in Indonesia.

Abstract

The rapid development of information technology and the Covid-19 pandemic have significantly transformed the landscape of Islamic preaching (da'wah), prompting traditional religious authorities to adapt their strategies. This study examines how Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) ulama in Lombok respond to these changes. Employing a qualitative field research approach, data were collected through direct observation of preaching activities and the digital engagement of NU ulama. The analysis draws on Campbell’s framework in Who’s Got the Power?, which explores the shifting dynamics of religious authority in the digital era. The findings indicate that NU ulama adopt a hybrid preaching strategy. They actively utilize social media platforms through livestream preaching and contextual religious content, while simultaneously maintaining conventional religious gatherings such as majelis taklim held in mosques, pesantren halls, and neighborhood prayer rooms. Theoretically, this study demonstrates that digital media does not replace traditional religious authority but instead reinforces embodied and community-based forms of Islamic knowledge and preaching.

Abstract

This study aims to design a visual branding system for Green Talao Park (GTP) Ulakan Tourism Village as a strategic medium to strengthen destination image, identity, and competitiveness. The research employs a qualitative approach using participant observation, in-depth interviews, and literature review to explore local potentials and define the visual characteristics of the destination. The findings reveal that the absence of a structured visual identity has limited the optimization of GTP Ulakan’s tourism potential. By integrating local genius elements such as mangrove ecosystems, talao landscapes, and coastal scenery, this study produces a distinctive and contextual visual branding system. The resulting logo and visual identity demonstrate key branding principles, including differentiation, consistency, flexibility, and cross-media applicability. The implementation of branding across souvenirs and promotional media enhances brand awareness, strengthens destination positioning, and fosters symbolic attachment between visitors and the place. This study contributes to the development of destination branding discourse by emphasizing the importance of local-based visual identity in supporting sustainable tourism and community-based economic growth.
