Abstract

Indonesia, renowned for its strong philanthropic culture rooted in traditions like gotong royong and Islamic giving (zakat), paradoxically faces persistent poverty affecting over 60% of its population. This study explores the complex interplay between generosity and economic disparity in Indonesia by reviewing literature on financial inclusion, digital inequality, and poverty alleviation strategies. Despite notable economic growth and extensive charitable activities, structural issues such as unequal access to education, healthcare, and financial services particularly in rural areas continue to hinder inclusive development. The research highlights the limitations of traditional charity in addressing long-term poverty and underscores the importance of integrated approaches that combine government policy, technological advancement, financial literacy, and community empowerment. Strengthening digital infrastructure, expanding access to financial services, and supporting small and medium enterprises are identified as crucial pathways toward reducing inequality. The study concludes that aligning Indonesia’s philanthropic spirit with inclusive development strategies is essential to achieving sustainable poverty alleviation and economic resilience.

Abstract

Islam provides space for its followers to develop variations in marriage proposal practices as long as they do not contradict Sharia law. One of the khitbah traditions that has developed in Minangkabau society is the practice of Pulang Bainduok. This study aims to highlight the practice of religious moderation internalized in this tradition amid issues of radicalism and religious intolerance. Employing a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach, this study explores the meanings and cultural values embodied in the Pulang Bainduok tradition. The findings show that Pulang Bainduok embodies philosophical, religious, and social values. The philosophical values lie in efforts to preserve religion, life, descendants, and household harmony. The religious values are reflected in the essence of the tradition, which resembles the practice of the Prophet Muhammad in honoring foster parents. Meanwhile, the social values are evident in the involvement of relatives in fostering a harmonious social order. These values reflect tasamuh (tolerance), tawazun (balance), ta‘awun (mutual assistance), and tawassuth (moderation), which play a vital role in maintaining family and community harmony. Thus, the Pulang Bainduok tradition can be regarded as a cultural practice that reflects the internalization of religious moderation in Indonesian Islamic society.

Abstract

Ahad hadith is one of the sources of Islamic law whose validity and hujjiyyah are still debated among scholars. One of the schools of thought that pays great attention to this issue is the Ahnaf school, whose scholars employ a critical method of confirming the hujjiyyah of Ahad hadith through its conformity with the Quran. This study aims to examine in depth the theories and principles of the ahnaf jurists in assessing the validity of Ahad hadith to obtain a comprehensive understanding of their epistemological basis and its implications for the acceptance of hadith as a source of Islamic law. This study uses a qualitative method with a content analysis approach, analyzing various primary and secondary sources such as books, scientific journals, and classical works relevant to the topic. The results show that, according to the Ahnaf jurists, Ahad hadith must first be tested against the Quran as the ultimate standard of truth. If its content contradicts the apparent meaning of the Quran, the hadith cannot be used as evidence, as it is considered to have been misreported (ziy?fah) and is categorized as a munqati‘ma‘naw? hadith. The Ahnaf scholars emphasize that the Quran is qat‘? because its transmission is mutawatir, while Ahad hadith is zann?, and therefore cannot be used to takhsis, taqy?d, or naskh verses of the Quran. Based on this principle, the Ahnaf jurists reject several Ahad hadith, such as the hadith on the obligation of wudu’ due to touching the genitals and the hadith on deciding cases with one witness and an oath, as both are considered to contradict the apparent meaning of the Quran.

Abstract

In contemporary Muslim societies, religious practices are increasingly expected to contribute not only to individual piety but also to broader social and economic development. This study examines the role of Hajj, waqf, and zakat in strengthening spiritual resilience and enhancing community welfare. The research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design, focusing on the implementation and management of Hajj values, zakat, and waqf within a community through field observations and document analysis. The findings indicate that the internalization of Hajj values contributes to the development of spiritual dispositions such as sincerity, discipline, and social responsibility. Furthermore, effective management of zakat and waqf plays a significant role in improving economic independence and social welfare at the community level. This study highlights the integrative function of Islamic religious practices and social institutions in fostering spiritual resilience and sustainable community development.

Abstract

This study examines the challenges of teaching respect for parents in shaping students’ character in the digital age and explores adaptive strategies to enhance its effectiveness. A mixed-methods approach was used, which included a survey of 250 middle and high school students, interviews with 30 parents and 15 teachers, and a three-month analysis of students’ interactions on social media. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively, while qualitative data were explored using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that education on respecting parents faces significant challenges in the digital environment. Approximately 82% of students reported ignoring or questioning their parents’ advice after being exposed to online content, while 74% of teachers stated that values related to respect are often taught theoretically without adequate practical application. Three main factors were identified: inadequate parental role modeling in the digital context, the absence of clear consequences for disrespectful online behavior, and limited opportunities for reflective communication between parents and children. This study suggests that integrating education on respecting parents with digital literacy, strengthening parental and teacher role modeling, and encouraging reflective dialogue can enhance character development among students. These findings contribute to the development of character education practices that are more adaptive and contextually relevant in the digital age.

Abstract

Conflict is an inseparable part of social life, requiring dispute resolution mechanisms that achieve justice while preserving social relations. From an Islamic legal perspective, reconciliation is an important foundation for resolving disputes through peaceful approaches oriented toward the public interest. This study aims to analyze the relationship between mediator ethics and reconciliation principles from an Islamic legal perspective, examine the relevance of mediator ethical values to dispute resolution effectiveness, and formulate a conceptual model integrating mediator ethics with reconciliation principles as a normative and practical basis for mediation. This qualitative study employs a library research approach combined with content analysis. Data were obtained from the Qur’an, hadith, classical and contemporary Islamic jurisprudence, laws and regulations, and relevant scientific literature, analyzed thematically and comparatively. The findings indicate that mediation success depends not only on technical competence but also on moral integrity, reflected in justice (al-‘adl), honesty (al-sidq), trustworthiness, wisdom, and neutrality. Reconciliation also seeks to restore social relations, foster peace, and promote welfare in accordance with maq??id al-syar?‘ah. The novelty lies in integrating mediator ethics and reconciliation principles into an Islamic legal dispute resolution paradigm.

Abstract

Kesenian Irama Minang is a traditional game and entertainment practice developed within Minangkabau society and commonly performed at wedding celebrations. Besides providing recreation, KIM functions as a medium of social interaction and local cultural preservation. However, its use of numbers, prizes, and elements of chance raises questions regarding its legal status under Islamic law, particularly in relation to maisir (gambling). This study examines the legal status of KIM performances at Minangkabau wedding celebrations from the perspective of Islamic law. A qualitative approach using library research was employed. Data were obtained from the Qur’an, hadith, classical Islamic jurisprudence books, scholarly articles, and other relevant sources concerning KIM, 'urf (custom), and maisir. Data were analyzed through qualitative content analysis using a normative approach. The findings show that the legal status of KIM depends on its implementation mechanism, particularly the source of prizes, the presence of stakes, and wealth transfer among participants. KIM conducted solely for entertainment, without participant fees or stakes and with prizes provided by organizers or sponsors, does not fulfill the essential elements of maisir and is therefore permissible. Conversely, KIM involving participant stakes, chance-based prizes, and wealth transfer from losers to winners contains elements of maisir and is prohibited. Thus, KIM may be preserved as local cultural practice when implemented consistently with Islamic legal principles.

Abstract

Marriage in Islam is recommended to be carried out easily and without burdening either party. However, marital practices in society are often influenced by customs and traditions that have developed over generations. One such tradition is the "lost money" tradition in Minangkabau society, particularly in Solok Regency, which involves the groom giving a sum of money to the bride as part of a traditional wedding ceremony. This study aims to analyze the "lost money" tradition, its influence on the postponement of marriage for the younger generation, and its perspective from an Islamic legal perspective. This study used a qualitative method with a library research approach. Data were obtained from books, scientific journals, articles, undergraduate theses, and relevant documents, then analyzed descriptively. The results show that "lost money" initially served as a symbol of respect for the bride and her family. However, social and economic changes have caused this tradition to become a financial burden for the groom and encouraged some young people to postpone marriage until they have sufficient financial capacity. From an Islamic legal perspective, this tradition is acceptable as 'urf' as long as it does not conflict with sharia. If it causes difficulties and hinders marriage, adjustments are needed based on the principles of convenience and benefit.
