Abstract

This study explores the influence of social media on the development of narcissistic behavior among students in Medan City, Indonesia. The research employs a qualitative, descriptive approach to understand how social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp, and others contribute to both narcissism’s positive and negative aspects. Interviews with respondents reveal a mixed perception of narcissism, with some viewing it as a form of self-appreciation within reasonable limits. In contrast, others see it as an unhealthy phase with negative implications. The study highlights that social media facilitates personality formation and boosts self-confidence but also fosters narcissistic tendencies through excessive self-promotion and attention-seeking behaviors. It concludes that while most respondents do not exhibit severe narcissistic behavior, the potential for harm necessitates mindful social media usage. Recommendations include engaging in meaningful activities, fostering empathy, and providing counseling services to mitigate the adverse effects of narcissism.

Abstract

Tourism in Indonesia holds significant potential, with domestic tourism being a primary focus for the government. The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia has developed the "Wonderful Indonesia" branding, utilizing the @WonderfulIndonesia Instagram account to promote domestic tourism. This study examines the impact of media credibility and information quality on millennials' interest in visiting domestic tourist destinations, using the @WonderfulIndonesia account as a case study. Utilizing the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) theory, the research emphasizes the importance of persuasive message delivery through digital platforms. Data were collected from a survey of 30 respondents and analyzed using validity, reliability, and multiple regression tests with SPSS 26. Results indicate that media credibility and information quality account for 31.6% of the variance in visiting interest, demonstrating a significant positive relationship. However, 69.4% of the variance is influenced by other factors, suggesting the need for further research into variables such as media exposure and content attractiveness.

Abstract

In contemporary society, the pervasive presence of digital devices has profoundly influenced the media consumption patterns of young children, presenting challenges and opportunities for their development. This study explores the impact of media content on early childhood and the urgent need for informed parental supervision. Utilizing a Research and Development (R&D) methodology, a comprehensive social campaign titled "Healthy Watching" was developed and implemented in Pontianak, Indonesia. The campaign aimed to empower parents, particularly mothers, with the knowledge and skills necessary to guide their children's media interactions effectively. Through educational seminars, videos, stickers, and social media platforms, the campaign fostered awareness about age-appropriate content, screen time limits, and the importance of active parental engagement. The campaign's efficacy was evaluated through stakeholder engagement and behavioral assessments of eight target mothers. The results indicate significant improvements in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, emphasizing the campaign's success in promoting healthy media consumption habits. This study provides valuable insights into the design and implementation of social campaigns to address the challenges of digital media in early childhood.

Abstract

This research explores the phenomenon of doxing as a digital form of attack against journalists, reflecting a shift from physical threats to digital harassment facilitated by the accessibility of digital media. Utilizing a metajournalistic discourse approach, this study examines how Indonesian journalists perceive and respond to the pressures of doxing within the framework of their professional practices and identities. By analyzing metajournalistic discourse documents from the Remotivi website, this research positions journalists as both victims and defenders within their field, facing pressures from both the political and economic spheres. Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical constructs of the journalistic field, capital, and habitus are employed to interpret the responses of journalists to these digital threats. The findings indicate that doxing represents a significant external influence, perpetuating a high degree of heteronomy within the journalistic field. However, there also exists a discursive resistance among journalists, characterized by efforts to define and uphold a journalistic identity aligned with autonomy and ethical norms. This study highlights the need for greater cybersecurity awareness and protections for journalists, emphasizing the importance of maintaining journalistic integrity in the face of evolving digital threats.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the crisis communication strategies used by the Indonesian National Police to manage the high-profile Ferdy Sambo case, which negatively impacted the institution's reputation and public trust. By analyzing media coverage from August 2022 to March 2023, this research employs a post-positivistic paradigm and qualitative methods, including interviews with key personnel, to understand how the Indonesian National Police executed its crisis communication strategy. A summative evaluation approach is also used to assess the effectiveness of these efforts through public feedback, media responses, news analysis from kompas.com, and internal evaluations. Additionally, the study explores the role of internal organizational communication in aligning management actions with institutional objectives. The findings reveal both strengths and limitations in the strategies the Indonesian National Police applied, highlighting successful approaches used to repair and improve public perceptions of the institution, with the importance of transparency, rapid responsiveness, and consistency in communication. This study concludes with recommendations to enhance public relations practices, such as press or media relation strategy to sustain and build the institution’s reputation.

Abstract

Indonesia, an archipelago significantly vulnerable to the climate crisis, faces numerous natural disasters impacting various sectors. Despite the critical need for public awareness and proactive measures, media coverage of climate crisis issues in Indonesia remains limited. This study investigates the level of resonance in online media reporting on the climate crisis from January to December 2023, focusing on keywords related to climate change, forest fires, and air pollution. The research uses topic modeling and Niklas Luhmann's systems theory to examine how four major Indonesian online media outlets address climate crisis issues. The findings reveal that while kompas.com and detik.com show consistent coverage, ANTARA and CNBC Indonesia place less emphasis on these topics. The study highlights the need for enhanced and more impactful media coverage to raise public awareness and drive meaningful action against the climate crisis. The results underscore the importance of media collaboration with governments, NGOs, and communities to increase the resonance of climate crisis issues in public discourse. Future research should explore the reasons behind the variation in media coverage and its impact on public perception and policy decisions, including the role of social media platforms.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of forensic communication with media analysis to understand and address sexual violence. Media authenticity is examined as a crucial factor influencing public perception and judicial processes. Through a detailed examination of how media constructs motives and the application of forensic communication techniques, the research demonstrates the potential of mass media to serve as forensic evidence. The study employs an interpretive paradigm and Ricoeur's Hermeneutics of Suspicion to analyze media texts and police examination minutes. Findings indicate that the construction of motives in media significantly impacts the evidentiary process in sexual harassment cases. This research underscores the importance of accurate media representation and calls for the media to adhere to accuracy, integrity, and social responsibility principles. Further research is suggested to explore the broader social dynamics and collective motives in criminal cases, particularly sexual violence.

Abstract

This paper explores the portrayal of Chinese immigrants in the animated film “Elemental,” using Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework to dissect the film’s narrative and thematic elements. “Elemental” serves as a modern allegory, reflecting the historical and ongoing struggles of Chinese immigrants in the United States, blending elements of cultural identity and adaptation within a fantastical setting. The film juxtaposes the fire element of immigrants with the traditional Chinese immigrant experience, examining themes of cultural integration, systemic discrimination, and the influence of media representation on public perceptions. Through denotative and connotative analyses, the research identifies how the film uses visual and verbal cues to construct a narrative that both challenges and perpetuates long-standing myths and stereotypes about Chinese immigrants. This study not only highlights the specific cinematic portrayal of Chinese immigrants but also discusses broader societal implications, including the impact of “Yellow Peril” propaganda and the role of media in shaping immigration policy discourse. The findings suggest that while “Elemental” contributes to a richer dialogue on cultural diversity, it also reveals the enduring complexities and challenges faced by Chinese immigrants in seeking acceptance and identity in a multicultural society.

Abstract

This study investigates the efficacy of comics as a strategic communication tool for health promotion, utilizing a qualitative analysis of literature and examples from the “Sehat Negeriku” website managed by the Indonesian Ministry of Health. The multifaceted nature of comics, incorporating visual storytelling and character-driven narratives, offers a unique method for conveying complex health messages in an accessible and engaging manner. This research identifies several key advantages of comics in health communication, including increased appeal and interest among diverse demographics, enhanced memory retention through visual cues, emotional engagement that deepens message impact, stimulated creativity and imagination, and the ability to reach a broad audience. Data collection involved a thorough review of existing literature and content analysis of health communication comics, focusing on their structure, content, and reception. The findings highlight how comics, by blending entertainment with educational content, can effectively reduce resistance to health messages, facilitate behavioral change, and contribute to public health knowledge. Furthermore, the study underscores the importance of considering cultural relevance and audience-specific characteristics in comic design to maximize their educational impact. This paper contributes to the understanding of visual communication in public health and supports the integration of comics into broader health promotion strategies.
