Abstract

This study delves into the diverse motivations and impacts of Instagram filter usage among young Indonesians, focusing on how these digital tools influence selfrepresentation and social interaction within the digital sphere. While Instagram filters are traditionally viewed as aesthetic enhancements, this research highlights their broader roles, including entertainment, education, and personal branding. Utilizing a qualitative approach, this paper collects data through interviews and netnography, employing snowball sampling to gather in-depth insights from eight young Instagram users. Findings indicate that young people use filters not only for visual enhancement but also for fun, educational engagement, and the expression of personal traits like humor and intelligence. This usage underscores young people's agency as active consumers, manipulating digital tools to craft their public personas and navigate social media spaces. This study underscores the need for further quantitative research to explore the widespread patterns of filter consumption among youth, aiming to enrich the understanding of digital identity formation in a globalized context.

Abstract

This paper aims to explore how the media framing the candidacy of Gibran as vice president for Prabowo. The author uses the framing media proposed by Gioia which introduces three stages of inductive framing, namely theme determination, first-stage categorization, and second-stage categorization. Framing analysis, as developed by Gioia (1983), is a qualitative research method used in which an individual or group constructs meaning about a particular problem or phenomenon based on their individual experience. Framing analysis provides insight into how the media directs or influences the opinions of its audience through the selective presentation of information and interpretation of events. The result showed that online media framing can shape public opinion, which has contributed to the highest achievement for Prabowo-Gibran, despite all the controversies. This study contextualizes its results on political communication and framing analysis. Further research on another kind of framing is still needed in this subject

Abstract

The emergence of social media has opened huge potentials for the risk mitigation in disaster management. However, the big flood in 2021 that swept almost entire South Kalimantan territory has left some questions about the relations of social media and risk mitigation despite the prevalence of social media users in the region. This article sought to describe the utilization (or lack thereof) of social media in the disaster management in the South Kalimantan especially in Banjar Regency, Hulu Sungai Tengah Regency, and Tabalong Regency before, during and after the big flood. The data are gathered by conducting systematic interviews with stakeholders, observation, and collecting related information from the internet. For the result, it was evident that social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram played critical roles where traditional communication systems failed or were nonexistent. In Banjar, external volunteers utilized these platforms to coordinate aid and disseminate crucial information, in contrast, the initial disregard for digital communications in HST highlighted the challenges of media literacy and trust in digital platforms, while the case of Tabalong serves as a model for other regions, demonstrating how leveraging local knowledge and social media can create a resilient and responsive community.

Abstract

Indonesia will celebrate democracy in 2024. In order to nominate candidates for president and vice president of Indonesia between 2024 and 2029, a coalition of several political parties will be formed. Prabowo Subianto and his running mate, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, are among the presidential candidate pairings being promoted. However, because of his youth and PDI Perjuangan party connection, Gibrans's nomination as a vice presidential candidate generated a range of public reactions. The PDI Perjuangan has formally announced Ganjar Pranowo and Mahfud MD as their candidates for the next Indonesian presidential election. Other media channels, such as CNN Indonesia, have taken notice of Gibran's situation and have included large headlines and in-depth coverage on their websites. Gibran's coverage aims to clarify his role as Prabowo Subianto's running mate for vice president and as a member of the PDI Perjuangan party. The purpose of this study is to examine how Gibran's reputation was built within CNN Indonesia following his unsuccessful bid for vice president. The study used a case study approach and a descriptive qualitative methodology. The Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki framing analysis model, which identifies media with syntactic, script, thematic, and rhetorical structures, was used to analyze the CNN Indonesia media. According to the statistics, CNN Indonesia developed Gibran's viewpoint by taking into account a variety of viewpoints from other people. None of the four news stories that were examined contained a resignation letter explaining Gibran's reason for leaving the PDI Perjuangan cadre.

Abstract

Election fraud is a topic that has become an interesting discussion in the 2024 elections. The mass media will certainly not miss the discussion on the topic of election fraud. Two major mass media in Indonesia, Tempo.co and Republika.com also reported news about election fraud. This study aimed to narrate the topic of election fraud in the two media. This research was analyzed using Robert N. Entman's framing analysis method. Primary data was collected from news in Tempo.co and Republika.com regarding alleged election fraud in the March 2024 period. The results of this study show that Tempo.co framed by indicating the existence of election fraud and was caused by various things such as money politics, ethical violations, and the loss of neutrality of election organizers. Meanwhile, Republika.com considers that the alleged election fraud causes doubts about the election results so the right of inquiry and a lawsuit to the Constitutional Court can be a solution to resolve the General Election Results Dispute (PHPU).

Abstract

The development of information technology has transformed the way humans communicate and interact, with social media platforms like TikTok becoming an essential part of daily life. This research focuses on the phenomenon of the celebrification of celebrity children on TikTok, examining how the children of famous celebrities such as Rayyanza Malik Ahmad, Bilqis Khumairah Razak, and Gala Sky Ardiansyah gain popularity on the platform. The study employs micro-celebrity theory and the concept of celebrification as its theoretical framework. The research method used is netnography with a qualitative approach, collecting data through a literature review and content analysis of TikTok videos. The findings indicate that the process of celebrification of celebrity children on TikTok is driven by high media exposure, unique personal characteristics, skills in creating engaging content, and popularity measured by the number of followers, likes, and other interactions. This study suggests the importance of further understanding the impact of celebrification on the development of celebrity children and the potential broader social implications.

Abstract

This study analyzes media framing related to the cancellation of the U-20 World Cup in Indonesia, with a specific focus on Kompas.com’s coverage of Ganjar Pranowo. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research employs data collection techniques such as observation and documentation, applying Robert N. Entman’s framing analysis to 10 news articles published by Kompas.com.  The findings reveal that the negative framing of Ganjar Pranowo, particularly concerning his opposition to the Israeli national team’s participation, significantly impacts his political image ahead of the 2024 elections. This study highlights how media framing shapes public perception of political figures in Indonesia, underscoring the critical role that media plays in influencing political discourse and public opinion.  Future research should investigate how media framing affects other political figures and events in Indonesia to provide a broader understanding of its implications for electoral outcomes.

Abstract

Digital inclusion is one of the initiatives by the Telecommunication and Information Accessibility Agency under the Ministry of Communication and Informatics. It aims to ensure that all individuals can easily access digital technology and the internet. However, digital inclusion has not been fully realized, particularly in terms of providing digital information access for people with disabilities. The purpose of this Digital Accessibility Study for Empowering Disability Inclusion is to examine the significance of digital information accessibility as a crucial factor in enhancing the inclusion and empowerment of individuals with disabilities. This study emphasizes the use of digital technology to improve information accessibility, thereby fostering independence among people with disabilities. It also aims to identify the obstacles and challenges these individuals face in achieving equal access to digital information. Utilizing qualitative descriptive methods, data for the study was collected through observations and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with the disability community, as well as through documentation. The findings indicate that the accessibility of information through digital applications has begun to show positive effects, particularly for individuals who are deaf or blind. Applications such as TalkBack, VoiceOver, Cash Reader, Be My Eyes, Voluntary, Infusion, Special Help, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and others, along with specialized hardware, contribute to the independence of people with disabilities. However, while information can be accessed, it remains insufficiently friendly to all disabilities. Both deaf and blind participants expressed that governmental support needs more emphasis, and they highlighted the necessity for enhanced social support from family, friends, and the community to help bridge the gap for individuals with disabilities.
