Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effect of cold storage duration on the physical quality of fried milk, including pH, moisture content, and yield. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was used with four storage treatments (0, 1, 2, and 3 hours) at 4°C and five replications. The results showed that increasing storage time significantly decreased pH and moisture content. The pH value declined from 7.29 at 0 hours to 7.23 at 3 hours, indicating increased acidity. Moisture content decreased from 29.8% to 24% due to water evaporation during cold storage. The highest yield was obtained at 2 hours of storage (11.02%) and slightly decreased at 3 hours. It can be concluded that storage for 2 hours at 4°C was the optimal treatment for maintaining the physical quality of fried milk while ensuring product safety and shelf life.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effects of red ginger (Zingiber officinale var. rubrum) extract supplementation and the use of cooled perches on heat stress indicators in broiler chickens. A total of 198 day-old chicks (DOC) were reared in 18 experimental pens using a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of three treatments with six replications. The treatments included P1 (control without red ginger extract and without cooled perches), P2 (red ginger extract supplementation without cooled perches), and P3 (red ginger extract supplementation with cooled perches). The observed variables included water intake, total leukocyte count, body temperature, and the heterophil-to-lymphocyte (H/L) ratio. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Duncan's multiple range test using SAS software. The results showed that total leukocyte counts did not differ significantly among treatments. However, water intake and body temperature were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in P3 than in P1 and P2 as the birds aged. The H/L ratio in P3 was significantly lower than in P2 and P1, while the H/L ratio in P2 was significantly lower than in P1. It can be concluded that supplementation with red ginger extract, either alone or in combination with cooled perches, improved thermoregulation in broiler chickens reared under high-temperature conditions in semi-open housing systems.

Abstract

The success of qual egg incubation is influenced by the sanitary condition of the incubator, as contamination by pathogenic microorganisms can increase embryonic mortality and reduce hatchability. This study aimed to analyze the effect of incubator disinfection using basil leaf (Ocimum basilicum) extract on the hatchability of Japanese quail (Cortunix japonica) eggs compared with chemical disinfection (intercide). The study was conducted in June 2026 at the Hatchery Laboratory, School of Vocational Studies, IPB University, Sukabumi, using an experimental method with two treatments, namely incubator disinfection using a chemical disinfectant (P0) and basil leaf extract (P1). A total of 88 Japanese quail eggs were used as samples, with 44 eggs assigned to each treatment. The observed parameters included hatchability and embryonic mortality. The data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test for normality, followed by the Independent Samples T-Test or the Mann-Whitney test according to data distribution. The results showed a significant difference (p<0,05), indicating that the use of basil leaf extract resulted in a higher hatchability 86,11% than the chemical disinfectant 64,29%. In addition, the basil leaf extract treatment reduced embryonic mortality by 13,63%, whereas the highest embryonic mortality was observed in the chemical disinfectant treatment 20,45%. It was concluded that basil leaf extract as a disinfectant has the potential to serve as a more effective natural disinfectant than chemical disinfectants.

Abstract

Pre-incubation management of hatching eggs is an important factor affecting hatchability because eggshell cleanliness helps prevent microbial contamination. This study aimed to determine the effect of wet cleaning using different water temperatures on the hatchability and mortality of Japanese quail eggs (Coturnix coturnix japonica). The experiment was conducted in May 2026 at the Vocational School of IPB University Sukabumi using a Completely Randomized Design with three treatments and three replications involving 90 eggs. The treatments were P0 (no wet cleaning), P1 (water at 25–30°C), and P2 (water at 40–45°C). Data were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis test. The results showed that water temperature had no significant effect (p > 0.05) on hatchability or mortality. The highest hatchability was observed in P0 (91,67%), followed by P1 (86,90%) and P2 (85,56%). In conclusion, wet cleaning with either room-temperature or warm water did not significantly affect hatching performance and can be safely applied to reduce eggshell contamination.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of administering red ginger extract (*Zingiber officinale* var. *rubrum*) and using a cool perch on heat stress indicators in broiler chickens. The study utilized 198 broiler chickens housed in 18 experimental pens, arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of three treatments and six replicates. The treatments were: P1 (control: no red ginger extract and no cool perch), P2 (red ginger extract without a cool perch), and P3 (red ginger extract with a cool perch). The variable observed was the heterophil/lymphocyte (H/L) ratio, an indicator of physiological stress in broilers. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) followed by Duncan’s test via SAS software. The results showed that the treatments had a significant effect (P<0.05) on the broiler H/L ratio. The mean H/L ratio values for the treatments were 0.350 ± 0.080 for P1, 0.198 ± 0.071 for P2, and 0.206 ± 0.065 for P3. Duncan’s post-hoc test indicated that P1 differed significantly from P2 and P3, whereas there was no significant difference between P2 and P3. In conclusion, the administration of red ginger extract—either alone or in combination with a cool perch—is effective in lowering the heterophil/lymphocyte ratio, thereby reducing heat stress levels in broiler chickens.
