Abstract

This study aims to examine the price behavior of poultry meat at Pasar Atas in Sarolangun Regency during the periods leading up to and following the 2023–2024 New Year. A survey method was employed for this research. Primary data collected included trader characteristics and poultry meat price behavior before and after the New Year, while secondary data covered poultry meat production and consumption in Sarolangun Regency. The study focused on the prices of broiler chicken, free-range chicken, spent laying hen, and duck meat. Descriptive analysis was used to analyze the data. The results indicate price fluctuations across these poultry types during the pre- and post-New Year periods. Prices for broiler chicken, free-range chicken, spent laying hen, and duck meat tended to rise in the two weeks and one week prior to the New Year. Conversely, prices for these poultry types tended to decline in the two weeks and one week following the New Year. In conclusion, poultry meat prices exhibited an upward trend before the New Year and a downward trend after the New Year.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of adding marine mushroom extract as a feed additive in rations on local chicken carcasses. The design used was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of 5 treatments and 4 replications. The treatments used in this study were P0 = Basic Ration (control), P1 = P0 + 1 ml sea mushroom / kg, P2 = P0 + 2 ml sea mushroom / kg, P3 = P0 + 3 ml sea mushroom / kg and P4 = P0 + 4 ml sea mushroom / kg. The variables observed included feed consumption, slaughter weight, absolute carcass weight and relative carcass weight. The results of the analysis of variance showed that the addition of sea mushroom extract as a feed additive in the ration had no significant effect (P>0.05) on feed consumption, slaughter weight, absolute carcass weight and relative carcass weight. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the addition of sea mushroom extract as a feed additive in the ration added up to 4 ml sea mushroom / kg ration has not been able to increase carcass weight in native chickens.

Abstract

Hatching egg shells are prone to microbial contamination, which can reduce hatchability, creating a need for natural sanitizing agents as alternatives to chemical disinfectants. This study aimed to examine the effect of lemongrass extract (Cymbopogon citratus) sanitation on quail eggshells toward hatchability. The research was conducted in June 2026 at the Hatchery Laboratory of IPB University Vocational School, Sukabumi Campus, using 82 Japanese quail eggs divided into two treatments: P0 (no shell sanitation) and P1 (shell sanitation using lemongrass extract), with 41 eggs per treatment. Hatchability data were tested for normality using Shapiro-Wilk, and since the data were not normally distributed, analysis proceeded using the Mann-Whitney test at a 5% significance level. Results showed a highly significant difference between the two treatments (Asymp. Sig. 2-tailed = 0.007; p<0.05). The average hatchability of P1 reached 78.00±0.54%, higher than P0 at only 59.57±0.54%, representing an 18.43% increase. This improvement is attributed to the citral, geranial, neral, flavonoid, saponin, and tannin content of lemongrass extract, which exhibit antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, thereby reducing microbial contamination on the shell without impairing pore function for gas exchange. It can be concluded that lemongrass extract sanitation significantly improves quail egg hatchability and has potential as an alternative natural sanitizing agent to replace chemical disinfectants.

Abstract

Feed formulated to boost egg production in free-range chickens consists of a balanced blend of ingredients designed to meet the birds' nutritional requirements for laying. High-quality feed must contain appropriate levels of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. In practice, the use of local ingredients can begin by mixing rice bran, corn, and natural concentrates that have been fermented using M4, molasses, and sugar as microbial starters. This process not only enhances digestibility but also reduces the risk of pathogenic microbial contamination and extends the feed's shelf life. Feed fermentation is a processing technique aimed at improving the nutritional value, digestibility, and shelf life of feed ingredients, particularly those sourced locally. The resulting fermented feed is characterized by an aroma reminiscent of *tape* (fermented cassava) or *tempeh*, an absence of rancidity or mold, and a brighter color. With proper planning, local ingredients can serve not merely as an alternative but as a primary component of laying hen feed, especially for small- and medium-scale rural farmers.

Abstract

Broiler chickens are sensitive to high temperatures, which can induce heat stress and negatively impact their performance. Strategies to mitigate this risk include administering natural supplements—such as red ginger extract (*Zingiber officinale* var. *rubrum*)—and employing innovative cooling perches. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of red ginger extract supplementation and the use of cooling perches on broiler performance. The materials used included broiler chickens (198 day-old chicks), drinking water, red ginger extract, housing facilities, galvanized metal perches (for the cooling treatment), a water chiller, temperature and humidity thermometers, lighting, feed scales, and extraction equipment. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was employed with three treatments—P1 (no red ginger extract, no cooling perch), P2 (red ginger extract at 10 ml/L, no cooling perch), and P3 (red ginger extract at 10 ml/L plus cooling perch)—and six replicates. Observed variables included water consumption, feed intake, body weight gain, and feed conversion ratio. Data were analyzed using ANOVA; significant results were further analyzed using Duncan’s Multiple Range Test. The results indicated that the administration of red ginger extract and the use of cooling perches had no significant effect (P>0.05) on feed intake, body weight gain, or feed conversion ratio; however, they did have a significant effect (P<0.05) on water consumption. Treatment P3 (red ginger extract plus cooling perch) resulted in lower water consumption compared to P1 (no extract, no cooling perch) and P2 (red ginger extract, no cooling perch). Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that the administration of red ginger extract (*Zingiber officinale* var. *rubrum*) and the use of cool perches can enhance thermoregulatory responses and contribute to a numerically lower feed conversion ratio in broiler chickens subjected to heat stress.

Abstract

Local cattle are a vital commodity for supporting food security and the economy of Indonesian communities. However, the productivity of local cattle remains relatively low, partly due to suboptimal reproductive performance. Environmental factors—specifically geographical variations such as high-altitude terrain—are believed to influence livestock reproductive performance. This study aims to assess the reproductive performance of cattle and the success rate of artificial insemination (AI) in Dusun Baru Hiang, Sitinjau Laut District, Kerinci Regency. The research was conducted within an integrated smallholder farming system involving 100 cattle managed by approximately 50 farmers. The parameters observed included Body Condition Score (BCS), Services per Conception (S/C), Conception Rate (CR), gestation length, Calving Interval (CI), and Days Open (DO). Data were collected through direct field observation, farmer interviews, and the recording of reproductive data, followed by descriptive analysis. The findings are expected to provide insights into the reproductive performance of local cattle raised in highland areas and the success rate of artificial insemination implementation. This study is intended to serve as a source of information and a reference for farmers and relevant stakeholders in efforts to improve the reproductive performance and productivity of cattle in highland regions.

Abstract

Fish protein hydrolysate (FPH) is a product of enzymatic hydrolysis of fish protein yielding short-chain peptides and free amino acids with high bioavailability. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of FPH supplementation via feed, drinking water, and their combination on broiler performance including Average Daily Gain (ADG), Feed Intake (FI), Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR), and Water Intake (WI). A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was applied with 4 treatments and 6 replicates (120 Cobb CP707 day-old chicks). Treatments consisted of P0 (control), P1 (1% powder FPH via feed), P2 (0.05% liquid FPH via drinking water), and P3 (combination of 1% powder and 0.05% liquid FPH). Birds were raised for 22 days (8–30 days of age). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed significant differences (P<0.05) across all parameters. Treatment P3 produced the highest ADG (66.20 g/bird/day) and the lowest FCR (1.86), indicating superior nutrient utilization efficiency through a synergistic dual-route FPH delivery. Treatment P2 yielded the lowest ADG (51.40 g/bird/day) despite the highest water intake (105.4 mL/bird/day), suggesting that single liquid FPH supplementation was insufficient on its own. In conclusion, combined FPH supplementation via feed and drinking water (P3) is the most effective method to improve broiler production performance.

Abstract

Jembrana disease is an infectious disease that causes significant economic losses in Bali cattle farming. Muara Papalik District in West Tanjung Jabung Regency has a large Bali cattle population; therefore, farmers' understanding of disease prevention measures is crucial for maintaining livestock productivity. This study aimed to identify farmer characteristics and analyze the factors influencing their perceptions regarding Jembrana disease prevention. Data were collected via a questionnaire survey and analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression. The results showed that the majority of farmers had an elementary school education (38.2%), 2–5 years of farming experience (61.8%), and a herd size of 5–10 cattle (61.8%). Farmers' knowledge of Jembrana disease was low; 50% were unfamiliar with the disease, and 79.4% had never attended extension programs. Farmers' perceptions regarding Jembrana disease prevention were rated as reasonably good, with an average score of 60.16%. Regression analysis yielded an R² value of 0.657, revealing that farming experience (Sig = 0.011) and knowledge level (Sig = 0.001) significantly influenced farmers' perceptions. In conclusion, greater farming experience and higher levels of knowledge correlate with more positive perceptions regarding Jembrana disease prevention. Enhancing farmer capacity through continuous education and extension services is necessary to strengthen awareness and the implementation of preventive measures in the field.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of marination time using pineapple juice on the organoleptic quality of goat meat, including color, aroma, texture, and taste. Despite its high nutritional value, goat meat is often tough with a distinctive strong odor. The bromelain enzyme in pineapple juice was tested as a natural solution to improve these traits. A Randomized Block Design (RBD) was used with four marination times: 15 minutes (P1), 30 minutes (P2), 45 minutes (P3), and 60 minutes (P4). Organoleptic testing involved 30 semi-trained panelists using a hedonic scale (1-5). Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The results indicated that marination time had a highly significant effect (P<0.01) on color, and a significant effect (P<0.05) on aroma and texture. However, it had no significant effect (P>0.05) on taste. In conclusion, marinating for 30 minutes was the optimal treatment, receiving the highest panelist preference. This duration effectively produced a bright red color, neutralized the strong odor, and tenderized the meat without altering its original taste.
