Abstract

This study aims to examine the price behavior of poultry meat at Pasar Atas in Sarolangun Regency during the periods leading up to and following the 2023–2024 New Year. A survey method was employed for this research. Primary data collected included trader characteristics and poultry meat price behavior before and after the New Year, while secondary data covered poultry meat production and consumption in Sarolangun Regency. The study focused on the prices of broiler chicken, free-range chicken, spent laying hen, and duck meat. Descriptive analysis was used to analyze the data. The results indicate price fluctuations across these poultry types during the pre- and post-New Year periods. Prices for broiler chicken, free-range chicken, spent laying hen, and duck meat tended to rise in the two weeks and one week prior to the New Year. Conversely, prices for these poultry types tended to decline in the two weeks and one week following the New Year. In conclusion, poultry meat prices exhibited an upward trend before the New Year and a downward trend after the New Year.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of adding marine mushroom extract as a feed additive in rations on local chicken carcasses. The design used was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of 5 treatments and 4 replications. The treatments used in this study were P0 = Basic Ration (control), P1 = P0 + 1 ml sea mushroom / kg, P2 = P0 + 2 ml sea mushroom / kg, P3 = P0 + 3 ml sea mushroom / kg and P4 = P0 + 4 ml sea mushroom / kg. The variables observed included feed consumption, slaughter weight, absolute carcass weight and relative carcass weight. The results of the analysis of variance showed that the addition of sea mushroom extract as a feed additive in the ration had no significant effect (P>0.05) on feed consumption, slaughter weight, absolute carcass weight and relative carcass weight. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the addition of sea mushroom extract as a feed additive in the ration added up to 4 ml sea mushroom / kg ration has not been able to increase carcass weight in native chickens.

Abstract

Hatching egg shells are prone to microbial contamination, which can reduce hatchability, creating a need for natural sanitizing agents as alternatives to chemical disinfectants. This study aimed to examine the effect of lemongrass extract (Cymbopogon citratus) sanitation on quail eggshells toward hatchability. The research was conducted in June 2026 at the Hatchery Laboratory of IPB University Vocational School, Sukabumi Campus, using 82 Japanese quail eggs divided into two treatments: P0 (no shell sanitation) and P1 (shell sanitation using lemongrass extract), with 41 eggs per treatment. Hatchability data were tested for normality using Shapiro-Wilk, and since the data were not normally distributed, analysis proceeded using the Mann-Whitney test at a 5% significance level. Results showed a highly significant difference between the two treatments (Asymp. Sig. 2-tailed = 0.007; p<0.05). The average hatchability of P1 reached 78.00±0.54%, higher than P0 at only 59.57±0.54%, representing an 18.43% increase. This improvement is attributed to the citral, geranial, neral, flavonoid, saponin, and tannin content of lemongrass extract, which exhibit antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, thereby reducing microbial contamination on the shell without impairing pore function for gas exchange. It can be concluded that lemongrass extract sanitation significantly improves quail egg hatchability and has potential as an alternative natural sanitizing agent to replace chemical disinfectants.

Abstract

Feed formulated to boost egg production in free-range chickens consists of a balanced blend of ingredients designed to meet the birds' nutritional requirements for laying. High-quality feed must contain appropriate levels of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. In practice, the use of local ingredients can begin by mixing rice bran, corn, and natural concentrates that have been fermented using M4, molasses, and sugar as microbial starters. This process not only enhances digestibility but also reduces the risk of pathogenic microbial contamination and extends the feed's shelf life. Feed fermentation is a processing technique aimed at improving the nutritional value, digestibility, and shelf life of feed ingredients, particularly those sourced locally. The resulting fermented feed is characterized by an aroma reminiscent of *tape* (fermented cassava) or *tempeh*, an absence of rancidity or mold, and a brighter color. With proper planning, local ingredients can serve not merely as an alternative but as a primary component of laying hen feed, especially for small- and medium-scale rural farmers.
