Abstract

This article examines foreign cultures from the perspective of the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), focusing on how Muslims should respond to the challenges posed by foreign cultural influences that contradict the teachings of the Prophet. The discussion employs a thematic-analytical approach by inventorying and classifying relevant hadiths related to the research focus, which are then described and interpreted through textual and contextual analysis. Overall, this study finds that the Prophet (peace be upon him) issued strong warnings against inclinations toward or the imitation of foreign cultures that conflict with Islamic creed (ʿaqīdah) and that may potentially undermine Islamic values, identity, and religious integrity. These hadiths emphasize the importance of avoiding the negative influences of traditions that often originate from outside the Islamic values. In responding to foreign cultural influences, Muslims are encouraged to adopt the hadiths of the Prophet (peace be upon him) as both a normative filter and a foundational guide for engaging with foreign cultures, so as to remain firmly committed to Islamic values, such as avoiding tashabbuh (imitation of non-Islamic practices), rejecting excessive materialism, maintaining ethical conduct, and preserving religious integrity. This study underscores the importance of safeguarding Islamic identity amid the currents of globalization that bring various deviant ideological and cultural influences. Nevertheless, Muslims may remain open to innovation without compromising Islamic values. This research contributes to the enrichment of thematic hadith studies, particularly in the context of the relationship between Islam and global culture, and reaffirms the role of hadith as a normative guide in shaping Muslim religious attitudes in the face of the complexities of modern cultural challenges.

Abstract

Studies on early childhood education psychology from the perspective of Prophetic hadith have largely relied on normative and fragmented approaches, resulting in limited understanding of hadith as an applied pedagogical framework. This study aims to systematically examine how the hadith of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) are interpreted and utilized in Indonesian academic literature as foundational principles for early childhood education psychology. This research employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method by analyzing 33 scholarly articles published between 2019 and 2024 that are relevant to early childhood education and hadith studies. The analysis follows stages of identification, relevance classification, and thematic synthesis based on research focus and methodological approaches. The findings indicate that hadith are positioned not merely as sources of moral and spiritual values but also as pedagogical guidelines encompassing concepts of fitrah, compassion, exemplary conduct, habituation, and parental responsibility as primary educators. The review also reveals significant challenges in implementing hadith-based educational principles, particularly related to limited pedagogical competence among early childhood educators, lack of contextual teaching materials, and insufficient parental literacy in hadith studies. This study concludes that strengthening the integration of hadith and early childhood education psychology requires a more contextual and collaborative approach involving families, educational institutions, and policymakers to promote holistic, character-based early childhood education grounded in revealed values.

Abstract

Pre-Islamic Arab marriage practices were embedded in a patriarchal socio-cultural structure that frequently disadvantaged women, particularly through unrestricted polygamy and asymmetrical marital authority. This cultural configuration constituted the socio-historical context to which the Sunnah of the Prophet responded through normative guidance rather than radical rupture. This article examines the dialectical interaction between pre-Islamic Arab marriage traditions and the normative formation of Islamic marital law through the lens of hadith studies, employing Hegelian dialectics as an analytical framework. The study adopts a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach based on library research, utilizing prophetic traditions related to marriage and polygamy as primary sources, complemented by classical hadith commentaries, Qur’anic exegesis, Islamic legal theory, and socio-historical scholarship as secondary sources. Data analysis is conducted through thematic hadith analysis, contextual interpretation, and dialectical mapping, in which pre-Islamic marriage customs are positioned as the thesis, the normative response of the Sunnah as the antithesis, and the resulting Islamic legal norms as the synthesis. The findings indicate that the Sunnah functioned as a mediating normative force that selectively preserved, modified, and reoriented existing marital practices toward ethical rationality and justice, rather than negating them entirely. In particular, the regulation of polygamy reflects a dialectical synthesis that transformed a culturally embedded practice into a morally accountable legal institution. This study contributes to hadith scholarship by demonstrating that the Prophet’s normative responses represent a dynamic process of socio-legal transformation, wherein Islamic law emerges through contextual engagement with, rather than detachment from, pre-Islamic cultural realities.

Abstract

The commodification of religion is a contemporary social phenomenon characterized by the transformation of religion from a source of transcendental values into a commodity governed by market logic, manifested through religious businesses, the exploitation of religious symbols, and the expansion of the spiritual industry. This phenomenon poses a serious challenge in Islam, as it risks undermining the principle of sincerity (ikhlāṣ) and distorting the true purpose of worship. This study aims to examine Prophetic hadith perspectives on religious commodification, with particular attention to hadiths emphasizing sincerity and warnings against worldly orientation in religious practices. The research employs a library-based qualitative method using a descriptive-analytical approach, combined with thematic (mawḍū‘ī) analysis of relevant hadiths, supported by classical scholarly commentaries (shurūḥ al-ḥadīth). To contextualize the analysis, this study integrates Peter L. Berger’s theory of religious objectification, which explains how sacred religious values may be reduced to social constructions subject to economic rationality. The findings reveal that religious commodification has the potential to erode spiritual integrity, obscure the ultimate objectives of worship, and weaken the moral foundations of the Muslim community. Hadiths on ikhlāṣ firmly assert that religious acts must be directed solely toward Allah, free from economic motives or social recognition. Meanwhile, Berger’s theoretical framework elucidates the social mechanisms through which religion may lose its sacred function when instrumentalized. In conclusion, a contextual and critical understanding of hadith is essential to preserving the authenticity of Islamic values in the face of religious commodification within contemporary social dynamics.

Abstract

The position and authority of the Sunnah continue to be reconstructed in response to the development of modern hermeneutical approaches to religious texts. One of the most influential contemporary Muslim thinkers addressing this issue is Muhammad Syahrur, who proposes a new conceptual framework for understanding the Sunnah through linguistic-semantic and historical-contextual analysis. This study examines Syahrur’s distinction between Sunnah al-Rasūliyyah and Sunnah al-Nabawiyyah as a response to the epistemological problem of hadith authority and the demands of modern ijtihad. The research employs a qualitative library-based method, using Syahrur’s major works Al-Sunnah al-Rasūliyyah wa al-Sunnah al-Nabawiyyah, Al-Kitāb wa al-Qur’ān, and Nahwa Uṣūl Jadīdah li al-Fiqh al-Islāmī as primary sources. Data are analyzed through descriptive-analytical and hermeneutical approaches, focusing on conceptual mapping, semantic examination, and historical contextualization. The findings demonstrate that Syahrur categorizes Sunnah al-Rasūliyyah as a normative, universal, and binding dimension of prophetic guidance, while Sunnah al-Nabawiyyah is understood as historically contingent prophetic practices that are not universally binding. This distinction provides a methodological basis for the contextual reinterpretation of the Sunnah and contributes significantly to contemporary Islamic legal epistemology by offering a more adaptive model of understanding prophetic authority in changing socio-historical contexts.
