Abstract

Reading habit in today’s society comes to a new dimension. Digital or electronic books (e-books) have been considered in the groups of reading sources in the present era. It means that printed books are no longer dominant as the only reading source. Since this is new and inevitable, society seems to have no choice but to follow the development. Therefore, this study was conducted to gain specific information/study about the preferences of the public, especially researchers and academics, in reading nonfiction books through printed and digital books. This research used quantitative methods from the survey result and descriptive analysis techniques to explain the data. The result showed that among 105 respondents consisting of researchers and academics, they prefer to read academic materials in printed format rather than digital ones. Emotional impression, eye comfort, level of understanding, ease, lack of technological engagement, and employment are crucial, making most respondents prefer to read books in print rather than digital (electronic). Thus, this study shows that the availability of digital books does not necessarily shift the existence of printed books because when the respondents are asked to choose, they, researchers and academics, actually prefer choosing nonfiction books in printed form over digital ones.

Abstract

Information search is carried out by all groups to support their daily work. This is also done by content creators as content creators so that the content shared is accurate and useful. This study aims to describe the information behavior of content creators using David Ellis' information behavior model. This research is a type of qualitative research. Data collection techniques with interviews and documentation studies. Sampling in the study was selected through a purposive sampling technique. Through this technique, two people were chosen to act as content writers and editors as informants in this study because they were directly involved in developing story ideas and writing video scripts for the "How come?" Youtube channel. Data analysis through data reduction, coding, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study found that in the early stages, content creators identified their information needs through the main literature; chaining, understanding information, enriching information sources; browsing, tracing information sources both digital and print media; differentiate, choose sources of information according to the preferences of content creators; monitoring, monitoring the flow of development of information sources; extracting, identifying and recording information points; verify, re-check the information that has been collected; ending, do the packaging and share the videos that have been made. The conclusion of the study shows that content creator search behavior is an active information search behavior because they know the need for information and try to fulfill it by finding and selecting sources of information. The results of the analysis show that the main factors that drive information needs into information seeking behavior are due to job demands and their desire to share informative and educative content with audiences. In addition, information search is also carried out to increase their knowledge and insight.

Abstract

Barriers to the implementation of open access globally need to be studied further using a systematic review. The purpose of this study is to look at the barriers from various countries in implementing open access. This study uses a systematic review method with a qualitative approach. The data collection method is in the form of planning, implementation, and synthesis of search results. This study uses Google Scholar to capture all research on implementing scientific communication with open access in the global realm. The search results on Google Scholar using Boolean logic found 273 articles. After the elimination process based on research objectives became 16 articles. This study shows that the biggest obstacle in implementing open access is the perception of the researchers (33.3%) which indicates that the quality of open access journals is less guaranteed, that is, many of them fall into the category of predatory journals. In addition, another obstacle identified was policy (25.6%). The government or stakeholders must make policies that regulate the standards for the quality of open access journals, the editorial board, and the time intervals for publishing journals. Other obstacles include financial factors where many researchers have minimal research funds but open access publications require large funds (23.1%), followed by copyright (10.3%) and language (7.7%) because not all researchers are fluent in English. The results of this study can be used as a reference for further research in assessing the obstacles that have also been happened in Indonesia.

Abstract

In general, the publishing industry is run by a staff of editors with non-specialist qualifications otherwise known as the "unintentional profession". Editors learn the skills to work 'on the job' (lesson learned) with more senior colleagues up to a certain time until deemed worthy and appropriate for promotion. Therefore, tacit knowledge plays an important role in supporting the editor's career in publishing. This study aims to answer the question of how the practice of transferring tacit knowledge is aimed at supporting the career development of editors at LIPI Press. Data collection was conducted in April-May 2021 using qualitative methods. Data was collected through a literature review, in-depth interviews with eight informants, and the active participation of researchers in observing document searches as a medium for lessons learned. The results show that most of the tacit knowledge transfer processes occur in editorial activities, which include socialization, externalization, combination, and internalization activities, both formally and informally. In this case, the greatest support felt by the editors was internalization in the form of knowledge sharing or flexibility in informal discussions, such as mentoring and coaching colleagues. In addition, this activity is also the most dominant or often carried out compared to other SECI stages, because the informal internalization process is felt to be more flexible and dynamic to exchange ideas, opinions, criticize, and understand a topic or problem being discussed. Finally, this study concludes that publishing activities based on knowledge of human resources require an adequate approach to understanding the social and strategic aspects of organizations so that they can support individual achievement and collaborative excellence, namely the transfer of knowledge, access to resources, and capabilities complete each other.

Abstract

Since the nineteenth century, social and humanities sciences had been predominantly dominated by Western scholars. Many Western scholars traveled to Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, gathering data from local sources in order to develop theories from their perspectives. Unfortunately, those theories were uncritically accepted by local scholars, applied in local cases and problems. The domination of social and humanities sciences by Western academia attracts “Third World” scholars to criticize it. They urge local scholars to decolonize Western-centric theories and concepts which have been imitated and applied in local problems without criticism. In this article, the author investigates the role of Sains Terbuka (Open Science) on decolonizing humanities science in Indonesia and Turkey. The author only observes history science as a case study rather than investigating all branches of social and humanities sciences. In this article, the author uses descriptive-analytic method through the historical approach, gathering data from literature and scientific journals to analyze attempts of Indonesian and Turkish scholars to oppose Western Centric theories and concepts. The author also explains that the rise of digital-based history sources plays a vital role in supporting the decolonization of knowledge and Sains Terbuka in Turkey and Indonesia. This research collects several online and digital-based history sources, such as the Khastara National Library of Indonesia collection and ISAM Library collection that have been often used by Indonesian and Turkish historians for their research. In this article, the author argues that open access of digital sources is highly important for historians to gather myriad data in local languages, encouraging them to create new theories and concepts that are free from Western Centric views.
