Abstract

This community service project aimed to improve the basic English skills of female students at Tunas Harapan PI Orphanage in Situbondo, Indonesia. The program responded to limited access to English education due to insufficient learning support and resources. A contextual and participatory approach was implemented over four weeks, involving 20 participants across various education levels. The methods included language games, songs, role-playing, visual aids, and interactive dialogue. Materials focused on basic vocabulary, pronunciation, and simple sentence construction. A needs assessment informed the lesson design, while formative evaluation tracked learner progress. The results showed increased confidence, vocabulary acquisition, and speaking fluency. A final product, the English Wall Magazine, was created collaboratively to support ongoing learning. This initiative supports previous research on the value of interactive, learner-centered methods in non-formal settings. It also demonstrates that impactful language learning can occur even with limited infrastructure when tailored to the learners’ context and needs.

Literacy is one of the key skills for the students. Unfortunately, it was found that the students of Al-Islahiyah Islamic boarding school had limited access to books and low reading motivation, which might inhibit the development of their literacy skill. The problem was addressed by literacy initiative which was done with the aim at increasing reading literacy skill of the students in Al-Islahiyah Islamic boarding school. The programs were done through four stages, which were 1) needs analysis, 2) program planning, 3) program implementation, and 4) program evaluation. In the program implementation stage, there was a workshop of reading, in which the students were introduced to various genres of text and discussed the summary of the books. Then, the program was continued by the formation of reading club. The reading club was done twice a week in the library during study time. This literacy initiative was successful in building reading habit in the boarding school. In the future, it is expected that the program can continue to strive to increase the literacy skill of the students.

Abstract

This community service program was carried out at MA Nurul Hikam Situbondo with the aim of enhancing the quality of English language learning through the application of innovative, interactive methods and supporting non-formal activities. The initiative addressed key challenges such as monotonous teaching methods, lack of visual learning media, and the absence of extracurricular platforms for language practice. The strategies implemented included the use of communicative and participatory classroom techniques, the development of educational posters as visual aids, and the revitalization of an English Club to support students’ speaking confidence. Based on Participatory Action Research (PAR) and descriptive qualitative methods, the program showed positive outcomes, including increased student engagement, creativity, and confidence in using English both in and outside the classroom. The results highlight the importance of integrating formal instruction with creative and non-formal learning activities to foster holistic language development, especially in rural madrasah settings with limited resources.

Abstract

Storytelling is an engaging activity that benefits both the audience and the storyteller. Through storytelling, students practice pronunciation, intonation, expression, gestures, and grammatical accuracy, while audiences develop their listening comprehension and gain new knowledge. To facilitate storytelling activities and strengthen students’ English proficiency, MGMP Bahasa Inggris and MKKS SMP Negeri Kabupaten Situbondo organized an English Storytelling Contest as part of the Englishphoria event. The contest featured participants from public junior high schools across the region. A key component of this program was the enhancement of the storytelling assessment rubric. The rubric was collaboratively developed and adapted from international standards (CEFR and Cambridge English), aiming to ensure a more objective, fair, and comprehensive evaluation of students’ performances. The event ran smoothly and demonstrated the importance of clear assessment criteria in educational competitions. It is expected that similar events and rubric-based assessments will continue to support English language learning and encourage daily English use among students in Situbondo.

Abstract

This community service program at Favourite Education Centre (FEC) Situbondo aimed to address two critical challenges commonly faced by non-formal educational institutions: the lack of English literacy resources and limited institutional visibility. The initiative focused on establishing a Reading Corner to promote independent reading habits and enhance students’ English literacy, alongside developing and distributing promotional brochures to increase public awareness and institutional outreach. Guided by Social Literacy Theory and Constructivist Learning Theory, the program was implemented through a four-stage process: needs identification, program design, implementation, and evaluation. The results showed a significant increase in student engagement with English texts and positive community responses to the brochure. This integrated approach proves that strategic and context-based interventions can effectively support language learning and institutional development in non-formal education settings.

Abstract

This community service program was conducted at SMA Negeri 2 Situbondo to enhance student engagement in English language learning through the application of interactive strategies and the development of a grammar minibook. The initiative addressed key challenges such as passive student behavior, lack of confidence, and teacher-centered instruction. Using the Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach and qualitative descriptive analysis, the program involved a four-week cycle of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. A variety of engaging activities—including digital quizzes, group discussions, educational games, and conversation simulations—were employed to foster a dynamic and participatory classroom atmosphere. Additionally, a grammar minibook titled “No More ‘Hah?’ Moments: Verbs and Modals Without Tears” was developed as a practical tool to support grammar comprehension. The results showed increased student motivation, active participation, and improved understanding of English grammar and usage. This program demonstrates that interactive teaching methods, digital media integration, and contextual learning resources can significantly improve student learning outcomes, especially in resource-limited school settings.

Abstract

In the context of vocational education, equipping students with both English proficiency and creative expression skills is essential for enhancing their employability and personal development. This community-based project, conducted at SMK Negeri 1 Situbondo, Indonesia, aimed to strengthen students’ foundational English skills and promote creative literacy through a dual-focus approach: communicative English training and guided literary writing. Utilizing Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), Project-Based Learning (PjBL), and experiential learning frameworks, the program provided students with practical speaking exercises and mentorship in producing English-language poems and short stories. These works were curated and published in a collaboratively designed school wall magazine. The findings reveal that interactive instruction and creative output fostered student engagement, confidence, and linguistic competence. Moreover, the program functioned as a catalyst for promoting school-based literacy culture. This study highlights the pedagogical value of integrating language instruction with creative production in vocational settings and advocates for scalable, context-sensitive community engagement models to support English learning in under-resourced schools.
